1945-Oct. 1973:

THE ERA OF UNION WORKERS, SCIENTISTS, AND ENGINEERS (And good pay for all)

During this period only the MAN worked. And he made enought to support the ENTIRE FAMILY! We now call this the "Family Wage" (Now we can't even get a "Living Wage" which is just for one person!

Most of these men were NOT even High School graduates due to the Great Depression/World War II Era (1929-1945) Yet they made enough to support others as well as themselves!!!

Men would apply for work at the many FACTORIES, get hired, and then each year they would get higher pay at a rate FASTER than the inflation rate.

This gave them hope for the future- just by showing up and doing their work they saw themselves and their families rising!! People were really BIg on "The Future" then as things got financially better each and every year. Some IMMEDIATELY started at MIDDLE-CLASS wages. The rest of the jobs were nothing like the minimum-wage jobs that exist today. In those past days they were "High Lower Class jobs. This means that one man could still support himself, his wife, and three kids with his lone paycheck BUT they did not have much left for non-necessities.

Note that what was "High Lower Class" back then was much, much more than now!

I NEVER met a grown man who worked for "MINIMUM WAGE" between 1945 and Oct. 1973, even though the minimum wage was MUCH, MUCH HIGHER then.

MINIMUM WAGE WAS ONLY FOR 16 YEAR OLD BOYS ON "WORKING PAPERS" OR BORED HOUSEWIVES WHOSE KIDS HAD LEFT THE NEST.

Dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars were actually MADE of silver and paper dollars said "Silver Certificate" on them!

During the 1945-Oct 1973 period the Democratic Party was almost always TWICE AS BIG as the Republican Party. This was because the Democratic Party had BOTH the Liberals AND the Populists (Working Class) while the Republican Party only had the Conservatives (and most of the Republicans who won elections were usually Liberal Republican)

Newspapers ran big ads from local industries begging for workers promising high wages and "We train you!" . They told the truth. I took those jobs.

THis was all going on despite the lowering of America's TARIFF WALL to protect workers. The tariff wall was accidentally begun by Jefferson in 1807 whe he put an 'embargo' against British goods. It lasted until WWII. America dropped most of it to help our allies in the war. After the war it was left down so the destroyed factories of Eurpoe and Japan could build up and help our side in the Cold War. Our factories were doing so well that the few things that Europe and Japan were able to make did not put anyome here out of work.

The height of this era was during Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson

Our cities always had SOME slums BUT they mostly were great places. There was no "SPRAWL" as people WANTED to live in them. Since about 1920 people left the farms to come INTO the cites. When I was young we would visit all the big cities we could reach by car as they were all flourishing, especially the downtown areas. Cities then had many small factories inside the center city and the huge 'plants' were on the edge of town. In the town I now live each block had a tic-tac-toe alley formation in most city blocks and the middle of the block had a small factory in it ("Light Industry") These Light Industries were all around the city centers and workers would go downtown to spend money during lunch and after work. (Malls started in Minnesota because of the COLD. I never heard of, or saw a 'mall' until late 1967) ..... CITIES WERE NOT EQUATED WITH POVERTY...... The poverty section of a city was very small comapred to the rest of the city. And those people just had problems, like alcoholism.

Almost all cars were AMERICAN cars and they were big and heavy. They did not crumple in an accident like they do now. Seat belt laws never crossed anyones mind. First of all, no returning vet from WWII who lived thru the Great Depression was going to put up with nannyism and all that heavy metal protected the people in the car much more than these flimsy things made light to get more mileage.

In 1969 I got my first full time job. I could have made mush more if I had worked in a factory but I just wanted to stand behind a cash register in a dept store. The minimum wage was $1.60, which is about $10.00 in todays money. I was paid $2.00/hr which is about $14.00/hour today. I got $80 for a 40 hour week and after deductions I got $62 I believe. It was enough for a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood all by myself. I did not have to share it with anyone to pay the rent. In those days the ratio was one weeks pay equals one months rent in a nice apartment! I could have made much more money in a factory. I lived in the center city where most young people wanted to do as they were then clean and safe. Most people were of either English or German ancestry. I rarely saw a black person downtown. We had some in high school but they acted the same as us and wore the same button down collars and slacks and loafers. When I asked a guy why I didn't see him downtown he said they preferred spending their money in their own neighborhood so it would circulate there.

Due to the lack of jobs in the Depression the big hope of most Americans was to get a good factory job after the war. And they did! BUt bigger dreamers dreamt of having their own little gas station. And that is exactly what they got. The 1945-73 period was one of zillions of little gas stations everywhere. These many one-man gas stations also fixed cars in those all-mechanical, no-electronic vehicle days. If you pull out any CITY DIRECTORY of that era at the library you will see gas stations all over. They were often right across the street from each other and sometimes a few in a row. I used to wonder what "Red Ball" serive was and found out that they were the guys trucking the munitions across Europe during the war. They were taught to fuel and repair vehicles then and used their skills in their own gas stations when returning home. This "every man a gas station owner" situation died suddenly in the Oct 1973 Oil Crisis. Those were many Middle-Class to Upper Middle-Class jobs destroyed.

In that era there were also family stores on most corners in the cities. Grocery stores, Candy stores, Meat Markets, Soda Fountain stores, Newsstands, and on and on. Those died due to both the Race problems on the late 60s and the Oct 73 oil cut off.

The "MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX" has always been given a bad reutation BUT it is never mentioned that it helped keep the wages up. First of all, it was the RICH PEOPLE in those days who were taxed the most percentagewise. It was something like 90% tax if you got a million dollars. Despite this being America's richest period America had NO BILLIONAIRES!! The only one in America was a British guy who became an American citizen to evade the BRITISH TAX LAWS which were even worse than 90%. I recall he was on a TV commercial once. The rich were taxed heavily and much of it went to the governments purchases of military equipment. The factories that made these things paid the MOST to factory workers and. for other industries to keep their workers to jump to those factories with the government contracts, they had to pay them more!! THIS ERA WAS CALLED "THE AGE OF TECHNOCRACY" when scientists, engineers, and manufacturing workers had the best paying jobs (And, in turn, caused all jobs to pay much more). The movie "2001", filmed in 1967 and shown in 1968 EXTRAPOLATED to 2001 but the new generation was coming in and things were already changing as most of them did not want to be scientists, engineers, or factory workers (I think they wanted to live with Bilbo and Gandalf.) We had gone from building all that WWII equipment to the Cold War military build-up and the Uranium mining era to the Space age. We needed lots of scientists, engineers, and factory workers. "Labor" had the upper hand.

In 1970 I recall reading a TIME MAGAZINE article on how the Europeans, Especially the Germans were finally catching up with America and that the Japanese are right behind them. I recall being worried by this as my family was working class and this may affect us. But I did not know what to root for. I did not realize that it was time for then-president Nixon to REIMPOSE THE TARIFF WALL!!! After all, it was only supposed to be down to let the Europeans sell to our people to get them out of poverty and make them strong allies against the Communists. Yet despite the many financial cataclysms we have had since they creatures who run our government REFUSE to put it back up!

The first rumbling we heard of the beginning of the end happened in August 1971. Suddenly there was a runaway inflation that no one could understand or expected. Prices just started shooting up. Nixon then imposed PRICE CONTROLS! We had only ever heard of such a thing in foreign countries and it seemed really weird. But it didn't help. Things just vanished from the shelves. The people who made them still had to pay more and more to make them yet they could not add on the extra expenses. They were not going to sell things for less than what it cost them to make them. After all, Nixon's price controls only controlled american industries and they bought some of the raw materials from other countries and those countries saw the dollar being worth less and less so they demanded more of them to equal their own currency. Nixon then got rid of the price controls on many things. But not on oil which would help lead to the DEATH of American industry in Oct 73.

Back in the 1990s the all-night ABC news show used to re-run 1972 news shows on economic as they now seemed so strange. Foe example, they ran shows about how the economy just kept getting better for the working class and how they had more and more free time as well as more and more money. Rather than taking more money, unions were now taking time off to spend the money. More and more manufacturers were shifting to paying people the good paychecks they were getting for 5 days to giving them the same amount for just 4 days. These were guys who were now getting upper-middle class level wages for 5 days work and were now getting all that in FOUR! The country had healed from the weird inflation burst of 8/71 and were now getting richer than ever. ............ UNDER CONSTRUCTION...

June 1, 2005: SEE "WHY AMERICA WENT CRAZY IN THE 1960s FAR BELOW

NO MORE LIES!!! On Tuesday June 5, 2000 the 6:30 NBC national news did such a lying propaganda piece about the so-called "GREAT" Economy of the United States that I just could not stand it anymore and I decided to create this webpage. I had been putting up with this for years but this was the one that broke the camel's back as it was so blatantly wrong in such an obvious way that NOONE could have done it by accident. .... It was a segment comparing the CLASS OF 1950 with the CLASS OF 2000. A grandfather and grandson had graduated from the same college and both had a degree in Engineering. Now I have been in Physics/Engineering since 1967 so I know what is going on in those fields. The very, very first thing they said as so-called "proof" that the 2000 grandson was doing so much better than the 1950 grandfather was that the grandson bragged that he would start working at $40,000 a year. Then they turned to the grandfather who lamented, "I only started with $10,000." Now the people who made this segment are not ten years old. They are, presumably, all adults. So are you going to tell me that they have no idea of the existance of "INFLATION"???? They knew of it perfectly well but propaganda relies first and foremost on the "Lie of Omission". ...... Now for some facts: When the grandpa got his $10,000 in 1950 a NYC subway token was a dime (I think it's now $1.50 or $1.75), and a phone call was a nickel, a candy bar was 5c, a softcover book was 30c-35c, coffee was a nickel, a comic book was a dime and very thick, (I just checked out what a Superman comic of equal thickness costs: $3.20!!! That is a 32:1 ratio! Much thinner ones are $2.50) ... Now when you go by the REAL inflation rate that $10,000 in 1950 bought FAR more than $40,000 in 2000. .... Here's what else they hid: In 1950 an Engineering job was for life. In 2000 a young guy will be kept maybe three years. Then he is laid off before they have to give him a raise. And they hire the next brand new grad at the lowest 'entry' salary. At age 30 the engineer will have to accept one-year contracts and move from company to company, not that there are many companies left as it was cheaper for them to move outside the country. ...... In 1950 one got a BENEFIT PACKAGE that was often equal to the salary. In 1950 they want most people to sign in as a "consultant". This means NO benefit package: No medical, No pension...... I also doubt if that kid was REALLY offered $40,000. Unless he had a Master's to his grandpa's Bachelor's. ... When you take into account the REAL inflation rate and the LACK of a good benefit package, the average Engineer is only getting one-fourth of what he did from 1945 until 1973. And THAT'S not even including the INSTABILITY of an Engineering job nowadays. (Note: Remember all those 'factories' we USED to have in this country? The top floor was always filled with Engineers and Scientists. Those buildings are now closed. Where are the Engineers, Scientists, and Union men? ) xxxx WHAT YOU CAN DO: Make copies of the FIRST page of this. Pick a periodical (newspaper or magazine). Write its name and address on a bunch of envelopes. Put the names of the columnists and reporters on the envelopes (one on each envelope). Mail them! That way the inportant media people will know of this site.

Just go to your local second hand soft-cover bookstore! Every book has its price ON the cover and its date of publication on the inside! Simply compare like books with about the same number of pages. ( Most books are 200 pages) If you have some old ones in your house, just take a peek at them and you'll see how much the media is in cahoots with the government to lie about the inflation rate.


Stop saying, "Prices have gone too high. That is exactly what your enemies want you to think and say. It plays right into their hands. It is NOT that prices are too high, it is that wages are too low! Due to the inflation games they play with your head. Which is more logical? That all the 2,768 different things you have been buying are all "coincidentally" going up in price at about the same rate or that ONE thing, your wages, have gone down? Here is a hint: When you are in a car are the 2,768 trees passing you or are you passing them?

The neo-Con NEW YORK POST has an honest economist named CRUDELE who also rants against the phony inflation rate. If you are old enough you know that most figures are phony as you recall what the wages and prices really were. But if you are young, you don't. What happened was that the Federal Goverment before the Oct 73 Oil Crisis simply bought a whole bunch of stuff each year and then bought the exact same stuff the next year and then compared them. But now they come up with phony reasons to keep dropping out the things that inflated the most over the past years.

OLD PRICES AND WAGES DO NOT MAKE SENSE IF YOU LISTEN TO GOVERNMENT LIARS. Here is a rule of thumb for inflation:

1816-1911 (excluding Civil War): 100 to one. A man worked for "a dollar a day" and could feed his whole big family on it. (Big families back then) I knew a man who worked in the 1890s and he also told me that he was paid a "cartwheel" a day. A big silver coin. Sometimes you see reproduced signs for sale that say, " Beer and a sandwich 5 cents" Well, that was five dollars. And there was the one that goes "Shave and a haircut, two bits". Two bits was a quarter. That was equal to $25.00 for a shave and a haircut. Only businessmen got them. Most people shaved themselves and their wives cut their hair.

1913-1919 was the runaway inflation age of the new FEDERAL RESERVE and the FIRST WORLD WAR. During that period the dollar dropped from a ratio of 100 to one in todays money to 20 to one.

The Roaring Twenties dollars were 20 to 0ne.

The GREAT INFLATION of the 1930s caused DEflation as a dollar was so hard to get it was worth more (Thats supply and demand). Remember the Joad family in THE GRAPES OF WRATH? The parents made 50 cents a day and the kids made 25 cents a day. That would be a ratio twice as much as the 1800s or 200 to one. HOWEVER, they were still poor with that 200 to one so it was probably more like 100 to one to be middle class.

WWII-1964: THis is about ten to one. Actually, it was a slow inflation from WWII until 1964. So to be more precise it's probably something like 13 to one at the beginning of the era and 9 to one at the end. .... UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Check the year and prices of the soft-cover books in second-hand bookstores as mentioned above. Now compare the price of the book with the minimum wage that year, which is found in Almanacs. Some libraries also have a row of Almanacs with both years and prices on the outside and the minimum wages on the inside. ...
