Why are schools and libraries getting so expensive?

My mother got to 6th grade and my father got to 9th grade. I had to work my way through college in the 1960s surrounded by all what we called "rich kids". While I was there the view of college girls was changing. It used to be that the girls were put through college by their parents so they could get married. The male worked and made enough money to support the whole family. The woman stayed home and made sure the kids were taught their ethnic, moral and relgious inheritance.

While I was there such 'rich kids' started saying, " If both my husband and I worked we would bring in TWICE as much money and we would have TWICE the money to spend! (This was around 1967,68).

But they didn't know that the LAW of supply and demand says that if one DOUBLES the workforce, the worth of each worker is cut in HALF! . The result was that the FIRST ones to do it were doing well for a while but when practically everyone did it the salaries went down 50%. Now they were trapped in a situation where both parents HAD to work to just have the spending money that the husband had ALONE in the early 60s.

And things were actually WORSE as neither parent was home with the kids so they had to PAY for daycare of som kind. I recall walking past a "Nursery School" all the time in the mid-1960s and wondering what it was and if it was part of the Public School system. I learned later that "Nursery Schools" were the early name for Day Care Centers. And this place greatly expanded in the 70s and changed its name to Day Care Center.

Now all these female college grads realized that they were in a worse position than they were before. So they started thinking about how to get FREE daycare. And there were TWO traditionally female occupations for a hundred years: TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS!!! So women had more power in schools and libraries than men so they started turning schools and libraries into FREE DAY CARE CENTERS for themselves and other women.

I was a real library nerd in the 50s and 60s and 70s. But my local library really changed suddenly around 1980. It went from being a very quiet place full of adults reading in silence to a place where reading books became an afterthought. The libraries took all the beautiful mahogany bookrack sections and turned them into really fancy offices for themselves. They shoved all the books in the back on metal shelves as if they were trash. Many were sold. (Many of the librarians had husbands who had second hand book businesses) Then they filled up most of the place with records and tapes and places for kids. Then they started inviting the public to leave their kids there for stories and movies and playing areas. Now our county libraries are actually Child care centers and our city library is full of inner city thugs with the children. I used to love to go there from 1964 to 1980, now I hate it.

And you all know what they have been doing with the schools. First, free meals on the taxpayers. Then free breakfast. Then after school things. Then things to midnight. All babysitting and cooking meals for the kids of working parents with the taxpayer's bills going up quickly every year.

In this town we just learned that our school taxes are going up another $200-$300 a year for broken down old inner city rowhomes. Ours have gone up $100 a year every year for 1920s $40,000 rowhomes in bad neighborhoods. Now its even WORSE!. This was on top of the raise on the other city tax that helps the so-called 'libraries'.

If you are going to write a letter to the editor I suggest you use the title: STOP TURNING OUR LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS INTO "FREE" DAY CARE CENTERS."

And please note that the Third World is now flooding into America with all their kids for US to supply with our Library/Public school Day Care Centers!!!!! June 30, 2005 Maybe more some other day.
