Vietnamese Zodiac

The Vietnamese lunar calendar is based on the cycle of the moons, with a repeated interval of 12 years. Each year is represented with an animal from the Vietnamese zodiac. It is believed that a person born within an animal's year will possess the characteristics of that animal. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor held a race for the 12 animals to determine who would be assigned the order of the year they would represent. The rat crossed the river first and was assigned for the first year, and so on.
