-P-Funk Tour List-

George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars

Review 04/09/97 From: Jacob Huebert

The set list was as follows (approximately), comments after that: One Nation Under a Groove (instrumental) Red Hot Mama Cosmic Slop Hit it and Quit It Pumpin' It Up (?) If Anybody Gets Funked Up Booty Underground Angel Help Scottie (I'm Tweakin' and I Can't Beam Up) If Anybody Gets Funked Up Summer Swim/Wade in the Water Funky Kind Foot Soldiers (Star Spangled Funky) Flash Light (Not Just) Knee Deep Sentimental Journey Atomic Dog Doin' It (?) Free Your Mind.. Not a bad show, but not nearly as good as the one with Bootsy and the Mothership I saw this summer.. it also really hurt to have the horns missing. It started out great with the Funkadelic songs but "If Anybody Gets Funked Up" went on *way* too long. "Booty" was excellent.. that song will never get old, even if George bobbing Louie's head does :) . "Summer Swim" started out weak and dull, but it was sounding great by the time they got to "Wade in the Water".. "Funky Kind" was a nice suprise, but not as nice as "Foot Soldiers".. I felt like I was the only audience member singing, which was probably because most of the people around me were colleGe kids who probably didn't know the vast majority of songs.. The effect of the audience continuing to sing the "Knee Deep" background vocals during "Sentimental Journey" was a real high point.. you would have had to have been there to fully apprecIate this, I think. :) "Atomic Dog" was nothing too special.. Louie came back out toward the end of it, mike in hand, seeming like he was ready to sing "Rhythm and Rhyme" or something, but George seemed to send him away and went into "Doin' It" or something like that, which I'd never heard before. The show ended kind of abruptly, after about 3 hours, at the end of "Free Your Mind". They invited everybody to an afterparty, but being under 21 and not very familiar with Akron, I didn't go. There werE some really great moments in this show, but it could have been better. I'll say that my appetite for Bernie and Bootsy's tours has been whetted, and leave it at that. :) -- Jacob Huebert
