George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars

Review 09/12/97 From: Dr.Brookenstein

At the Electric Factory, Philadelphia Around 8:25pm, I spotted Billy Bass and Skeet onstage, testing their instruments.....I was praying that the opening act, Guster, wouldn't show up and that the P-Funk crew would perform an extra hour! Damn......Guster came out at 8:30pm! THIS GROUP IS A FUCKIN' JOKE!!!! WHITE-TRASH PUNK-ROCK BEFORE A FUCKIN' P-FUNK SHOW......WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO??? WHAT A WAY TO SUCK THE ENERGY OUT OF THE ROOM!!! I thought the opening act was supposed to PUMP up the crowd for P-FUNK!! At least, Coolbone (3/29/97) was a good act to perform before the P-Funk Mob!! Coolbone's shit was funky on the jazz tip and they even perform along with the P-Funk Mob!! Oh how I wish Coolbone was there last night.......YO FELLAS, WHERE Y'ALL AT?!! Anyway, "Buster!" (sarcasm) performed until 9:20pm (whew!!) and there was a 30-minute before I spotted Blackbyrd, Skeet, Billy Bass and Razorsharp onstage. At 10:10pm, the show began the funk bomb "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)". About 5 minutes into the show, the P-Funk master himself Clinton appeared. The exhausting song listing is: Bop Gun (Endangered Species) (with "Get Off Your Ass and Jam") Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucka) music from "Psychoticbumpschool" (incorporating the "Wind Me Up" chant from "Bootzilla") The Pinocchio Theory chant from "We Can Funk" ("We're funkin' over here, up there ain't shit!") Skeet's bass solo Night of The Thumpasorus Peoples Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo-Doo Chasers) Flashlight Flashlight (rap) "All The Around World For The Funk" chant from "Theme From The Black Hole" (Not Just) Knee Deep Sentimental Journey Booty Yank My Doodle Lines from "Maggot Brain", "What is Soul?", "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow" Disco-To-Go horn riff Rubber Duckie music from "Super Stupid" Maggot Brain Dog Star (Fly On) Do That Stuff Gamin' on Ya Undisco Kidd Wipe of the Week Rhythm and Rhyme Standing on the Verge of Getting It On Good To Your Earhole Pumpin' It Up All Sons of Bitches If Anybody Gets Funked Up (It's Gonna Be You) Atomic Dog Hall of Fame riff/Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow (incorporating chant from "Music For My Mother" and a bass riff from the fast version of "I Call My Baby Pussycat") Let me first say that this is the first show (that I've been to) where Billy Bass was standing to the left of the stage for half of the performance....I guess he wanted to break the monotony. Steve Boyd took the lead vocals for the late Glen Goins on "Bop Gun", with Garry & Clip doing background vocals. What a fucking way to start the show!! I just wish that the fellas really had a "bop gun" and "funkatize" every ass in the building! I was really surprised to hear the Bootsy classics "Psychoticbumpschool" and "Pinocchio Theory", especially the latter song, with vocals by George and Clip. GO AHEAD WITH Y'ALL BAD SELVES!!!! (Don't fake the funk or your nose will grow!) The solo by Rodney "Skeet" Curtis was fabulous, and (of course) no P-Funk show is complete without "Night of The Thumpasorus Peoples". (Ga ga goo ga, ga ga goo ga, ga ga goo ga ga!) But, wait a minute....wait a minute.......I couldn't believe my ears when I heard "The Doo Doo Chasers" (one of my favorite Funkadelic tunes from the late 70's).........music to clean your shit by!!! The rap from "Flashlight" featured the lyrical stylings of the one and only Treylewd. Unfortunately, Sir Nose never came out for the original song.....maybe old Smellavision was sick or something! Garry and George did most of the vocals for "Knee Deep", while Bennie entertained everyone with the scat vocals from the song.......Bennie sounded pretty good! Babblin' Louie was also not at the show (WHERE ARE THESE PEOPLE??), so George did the vocals to "Booty" (I *love* that song!), with Clip on background. Treylewd and some white guy (I don't remember his name) performed the filthy song "Yank My Doodle", with Clip doing more background vocals! George did the opening lyrics to "Maggot Brain", "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow", and two lines from "What is Soul?" ("For nothing is good unless you play with it. And all that is good is nasty. Fly on.) "Maggot Brain" was so damn good because the amazing raw power of Mike Hampton ripping some truly funked-out, psychedelic chords from his guitar. I closed my eyes and for a short eternity, I was transported to another world! "Dog Star" got me rocking back and forth, in overwhelming joy and funktism!! (now ya know I'm too much into the P, when I use words like "funktism"!) This is the first time that I remember these guys doing "Do That Stuff" and "Undisco Kidd".......and it was FONKY!!! "Rhythm and Rhyme" featured some new lyrics referring to George "putting his proverbial foot so far up his competitor's ass that he'll choke on his verbal gas, have lacerations on his lungs, taste the kiwi shoe polish on his breath, feel George's foot tapping on his brain, and die from a proverbial ass kicking"!! DAMN!!!!!!!!!! That George is the king of bullshittin'!! :-) I guess George was in a state of mental diarrhea, talking shit a mile a minute!!! Clip Payne is one crazy motherfucker! During the song "Atomic Dog" (please correct me if I'm wrong), he wrote some messages on Kleenex tissues, like "Acid Paper", "Sang" and "Smile!" (with a tongue drawn at the bottom) HA HA HA HA!!! What made it even more hilarious was when he acted a complete fool (on his knees, taunting everyone with his tongue sticking out) after flashing the "Smile!" note!! HA HA HA!! (Can you say "insane in the membrane"? :-)) He took the tissues, balled them up and tossed them into the audience! At the end of the show, Kash walked over the audience and began tossing drumsticks.....some lucky man just in front of me caught one (grrr!!!!) By the way, the show was only 3 1/2 hours long!!! HEY, I WAS ROBBED!!! WHERE IS THE OTHER 30 MINUTES???!! YOU GUYS CHEATED YOUR FUNKATEERS!!! WHAT, YOU GUYS GOT A CURFEW??!!! OHH OHHHHHH!!! (Sam Kinison impression!) The Personnel: George Clinton Billy Bass Lige Blackbyrd Skeet Belita Clip Steve Garry Mike Hampton Razorsharp Kash Treylewd P-Nut Paul Bennie Greg Thomas and a bunch of sound crew members Anyway, it's so great to see the P again! I freed my mind and my ass followed!! It's because of the screaming and shouting during this concert that my throat is fucked up! But, it was worth it! (hmmm?!) For just $22, George had opened the windows of the universe, and had poured out such a blessing of funk that there was no room enough to receive it!! (but the funkateers received what they could). P-Funk is a state of mind, necessary to find, ready to attack your behind, relying on the rewind, and one of a kind!
