An England U21 international, Andy signed for Boro on the 1st of August 1995 as a trainee, he progressed quickly through the youth ranks and was promoted to the reserves in July 1996. Campbell was one of Middlesbroughs brightest young talents claiming a number of England U21 and Youth caps. Became the youngest player ever to play in the Premiership when he made his Boro debut against Sheffield Wednesday in 1996/7 at the age of 16. He celebrated his 20th birthday with 2 goals when on loan to Sheffield United in 1999. He broke into the Boro first team under Bryan Robson when Ricards form faltered, this lead to a impressive run that culminated in a goal agianst Manchester United that had Boro leading 1-0 at half time. Unable to make much of an impact in the 2000/01 season, Campbell joined First Division promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers on loan in March 2001, he played six times without scoring. Almost moved to Crystal Palace in 2001 but failed his medical, he went out on loan again towards the end of February 2002 when joining Second Division Cardiff City for the remainder of the season with a view to a permanent move.
