"The new Bryan Robson". That was the tag Emerson Moises Costa carried with him when he joined Boro in a £4 million move in May 1996. This superbly gifted midfielder may not look anything like his manager but there is no getting away from their similarities in style. Like Robbo, Emmo covers every inch of the pitch, tackles hard and scores goals. But it hasn't all been plain sailing for the Brazilian. Emerson had to do much of his settling in to a new way of life in the public glare. At the same time, he had no such problems in adapting to the English style of football and was a revelation during his first two months on Teesside when many pundits tipped him for stardom. Stories about how he and his wife were struggling to settle down on Teesside adversely affected his form on the pitch but Emerson bounced back to his best alongside his compatriot, Juninho.
Although his talents are now unquestionable, Emerson's rise to the top was far from straight forward. He began his playing days with top Brazilian side Flamengo but found opportunities hard to come by and moved on to Curitiba. After taking advice, he switched to Portugal in 1991 in an attempt make the big time and impressive displays for Belenenses over the following three years clinched a move to Porto. It was there, under the management of former England boss Bobby Robson, that he developed into a world class midfielder, helping Porto to win successive league titles. The winner of the 1996 Portuguese player of the year award, Emerson also starred in the European Champions League. Much sought after, he was linked with Sampdoria, Fiorentina, Inter Milan and Roma but chose Boro when Bryan Robson laid down the gauntlet of helping Boro win a first major honour. His early displays at the Cellnet Riverside Stadium attracted unwanted interest from Barcelona and Parma but Emerson stayed put for six months after the side had been relegated before finally making a £4.2 million move to Tenerife. He again moved in 2000 to Deportivo on a Bosman free.
