North-East born Steve Vickers started his career at Tranmere Rovers and joined Boro in 1993, becoming a big favourite with fans. Unable to get into the Middlesbrough first team, he was loaned out to First Division Crystal Palace in September 2001. Impressed greatly in his seven games for the club. Palace boss Steve Bruce wanted to sign him permanently, but the club could not agree personal terms with the player. That led to Bruce tendering his resignation amid rumours that he would take the vacant Birmingham City job. Bruce's resignation was rejected and he was left in limbo. Ironically, Vickers then went on loan to Birmingham in November 2001. Impressed enough to earn a permanent switch after five appearances - a move which cost the Blues £425,000 rising to £500,000 after apperances.
