Zaer is the Kaan of Death. He resembles a man with some silver in his dark hair and a silver beard, and dresses in black and silver. He conducts the soul to the Flame on Chialta, to send them to the Greater World, and then takes the smoke-image he forms of the soul, with all its memories, to his realm, somewhat to the west of the great mountain Chialta is on.
Cold and merciless, he sometimes can be tricked, but is relentless. One of the mightiest of the Kaanho, only Sagin can make him back down from what Zaer considers to be his rightful prey. He regards Angusin as a leader-among-equals, and sometimes disagrees, quite forcefully with Angusin.
His land is a place of almost perpetual fog and mist.
