He married ANNE JANE MUIR 1846, daughter of COL. THOMAS MUIR. Notes for MAHLON HOAGLAND:             From "The Hoagland Family in America" As has been before noted, it was the good custom of our Dutch ancestors to give their boys a chance to learn some useful trade. Mahlon was only eight years of age when his father died. His mother, however, apprenticed him, at the age of 12, to learn the carpenter's trade, and so thoroughly did the lad apply himself to work, that, as soon as he was of age, he proved himself able to conduct a business, of his own. Overcoming several misfortunes, he succeeded, and finally gained a fair competency. A favorable opportunity to engage in what he deemed a more lucrative business occurring, he entered, in 1846, into partnership with James Fuller, and erected a large foundry and machine shop in Rockaway, NJ. In 1850 this shop was burned; and, buying out the interests of his partner, he rebuilt the works, and from that time to the present has been engaged in an extensive and successful iron and foundry business. Although past the allotted threescore years and ten, he is hale and hearty, and gives personal attention to his large business, to which are added important public duties, including those of the treasurer of Morris County, a trustee and elder of the Presbyterian Church in Rockaway, etc. He is a large land owner, having about 1700 acres in "White Meadow," where he now resides.       Children of MAHLON HOAGLAND and ANNE MUIR are:  i. ELLA10 HOAGLAND, b.
