Lacey On Leno

Jay: My next guest, a charming young lady. She can be seen on the critically acclaimed series "Party of Five." She also stars in the new movie "Lost in Space" which opens nationwide on April 3rd. Please welcome Lacey Chabert.

Jay: Did you meet John Travolta?

Lacey: Oh, yes. He's like, wow.

Jay: He's a nice guy.

Lacey: You know those commercials when you like open the door and doves fly out? He just glows. Yeah, but, I actually got to - I saw him in Hawaii. I was on vacation there. And I was swimming in the swimming pool, and he just walks by, and, well, I almost drowned.

Jay: You know, I'm looking -- You were 12 when you were here last. You were, like, this little kid. Now you're, like, this young woman person. God, you've grown up, it's like ... It's like, three -- is it really three years? So, now you're 15?

Lacey: Yes.

Jay: Oh, man. I remember -- you wanted to be a singer originally, right?

Lacey: When I was little, yeah. My sister and I --

Jay: Little was, like, five years ago.

Lacey: Well, still, you know -- we would sing with hair brushes as our mike in front of our mirror. and that was sort of what I wanted to do.

Jay: You won some contests and things, right?

Lacey: Yeah. Yeah, I was on "Star Search" as a vocalist.

Jay: You were on "Star Search"? Now, how old were you?

Lacey: I was 8.

Jay: 8. Now, was that embarrasing?

Lacey: It was fun, then. But now -- it would be really embarrasing.

Jay: You know -- that's funny... 'cause Ed McMahon is a good friend of mine. I said -- "Oh, you know, Lacey is coming on this show and just --- well, see, this is what you looked like when I met you. When I looked at this today, this is the greatest piece of tape I have ever --

Lacey: Oh, my gosh!

Jay: No, this is the greatest. I love this piece of tape. This is going into my anniversary reel. Here is Lacey on "Star Search".

[8-year-old Lacey singing "Happy Days are Here Again"]

Jay: That's the greatest -- that's great.

Lacey: What was I thinking?

Jay: I love the big tooth. It's great -- it's cute -- it's wonderful -- it's the greatest thing I've ever seen. Now -- how is "Party of Five" going? This show is like -- because, when you were here, the show was sort of struggling along and few people watching. It got great critical reviews -- now, it's got huge viewers.

Lacey: We're almost in our fourth year.

Jay: Wow.

Lacey: Another sad year. Claudia -- her parents died, her brother's diagnosed with cancer and almost died. Her other brother was an alcoholic. She's missing school -- so now, she's seeing a psychiatrist from depression. So ... life's been good ...

Jay: Now, the last time you were here, as I remember, you had a huge crush on that Scott Wolf guy.

Lacey: Yes.

Jay: Wasn't he engaged to Alyssa Milano?

Lacey: He was.

Jay: Did he break your heart?

Lacey: Well, I had a huge crush on him. And I though, you know, that he would, like, marry me. But then -- he gets a girlfriend, and I was totally crushed. But now -- we're really best friends. He's like my brother.

Jay: Well, okay. You have -- you CAN have a boyfriend

Lacey: I did. I had my first boyfriend, actually, when I was filming "Lost in Space" in London.

Jay: You met a foreigner?

Lacey: No, no, not a foreigner, actually. He lives in New York.

Jay: They carry diseases, those foreign guys. I'm very protective of you, because you're my little guest. You met a guy and he was in the movie?

Lacey: He wasn't in the movie. He was KIN to someone in the movie.

Jay: Okay.

Lacey: I had my first kiss.

Jay: Oh, first kiss. That's okay, that's good. With adult supervision around, I hope.

Lacey: No, it was just him, outside of my flat in London, actually at my apartment. It was the last time I was going to see him. I thought, you know, maybe he would want to kiss me, or whatever. I thought I was going to throw up. And he just looks at me, and says, "Kiss me." And we kissed, and it was perfect.

Jay: Then you went home --

Lacey: -- you couldn't have written it better.

Jay: Then he left.

Lacey: Right. Yeah, exactly.

Jay: Have you been writing -- have you been corresponding with this guy?

Lacey: That's kind of weird.

Jay: He doesn't know how to write? How young is this guy?

Lacey: No, he's my age. We talk. And let's just say, we're now more of friends. Something happened -- I still haven't figured it out. I don't know.

Jay: So that will happen. You're 15 -- you've got the rest of your life. That's okay. Now -- tell us about "Lost in Space". Obviously, this is based on the famous TV show from the '60s. Now -- your character, I'm trying --

Lacey: I play Penny.

Jay: Penny?

Lacey: Penny Robinson, space captive. She's totally against going on the mission at all. She's this rebel.

Jay: Okay. Now, we have a clip here from the movie?

Lacey: I think so.

Jay: All right. Take a look. Here we go, let's take a look. Here's a scene from "Lost in Space".

[Clip from Lost in Space]

Jay: So tell me -- was it fun filming this movie?

Lacey: Oh, it was so much fun. It was very challenging -- we had to wear all these weird costumes, and these, like, skin-tight latex costumes. The same people who did the "Batman" costumes. I had a body cast made before I went over there.

Jay: A body cast? Now -- why is that?

Lacey: So that they could have my body in London to make the costumes.

Jay: Oh, I see.

Lacey: And I had to stand there with my arms out, you know. And they were wrapping me for, like, 2 and a half hours. Then they get to my face -- obviously, I didn't know it then -- I was very claustrophobic. So, I thought, "I can't take this. I'm about to throw up."

Jay: Did they wrap your face?

Lacey: Yes. And I was trying to stick my tongue through the mold, to break the mold -- telling them, "Okay, quit -- I'm about to faint." And they're like, "Oh, I think she wants a picture. Let's take a picture." And they're offering me -- "Would you like some tea? Would you like milk with your tea?" And I was trying to say something. And finally -- my mom came, and ripped it off, 'cause, she thought, you know, obviously -- something was wrong. I like -- collapsed.

Jay: There you go.

Lacey: It wasn't the best.

Jay: All part of the business.

Lacey: But it was very fun.

Jay: Now -- did you like Europe? Was it fun?

Lacey: It was so much fun. The best -- the best shopping. I got kicked out of Harrod's.

Jay: You got kicked out? For what?

Lacey: You know -- Harrod's, this, like -- department store landmark, I was in there, and I was wearing cutoff shorts and a nice t-shirt, and they come over and say, "Excuse me -- you're dressed inappropriately. You'll have to be escorted out of the building."

Jay: Wow.

Lacey: And they take me to a sign, and there was this little person wearing shorts with a big "X" through it. And they made me leave!

Jay: Aw. There you go, there you go. Well, listen -- it's good to see you again. It's good to see you all grown up. You're doing great. Congratulations.

Lacey: Thank you.

Jay: We should play our tape again, but we don't have time.

Lacey: Thank you.

Jay: We'll be right back with Jimmy Ray. [to Lacey] Stay away from these musician guys.
