Building: Historic Vance Hotel Address: 226 South Center Street Built: 1921
Columbus Vance Henkel, Sr. was instrumental in building the Vance Hotel in 1918, after fire destroyed the Hotel Iredell, the only first class hostelry in Statesville at the time. The Vance was built using the most up-to-date methods with brick and steel construction and most of the materials were shipped by rail and carried by hand to the site. The crystal chandeliers and marble -- used in the lobby, bathrooms and throughout the hotel-- were imported from Italy.
The Hotel was completed and opened for business on June 17, 1922. The Vance became a showplace for Statesville and North Carolina, hosting many events including political gatherings, a presidential visit, the N.C. Symphony and various other state and local functions. Because of its immediate successes, the operator began the third wing before the end of the first year of operation.
The building was built as a five-story, 119 room structure. The building now has 85 rooms as subsequent rehabilitations have expanded rooms and made suites out of some rooms. This hotel represented one of many in Statesville built for the traveling public including: Hotel Iredell, The St. Charles, Carolina Hotel and McElwee Hotel.
The Vance Hotel has seen three major rehabilitations: in 1961 after C. V. Henkel, Jr. purchased the building from an auction, in 1985 after Jim and Ann Bible purchased the structure and in 1994 when Vance Associates purchased the building. The 1961 rehabilitation added a swimming pool and the beginnings of a parking deck. The pool was later covered with parquet flooring and used as a ballroom for the coming decades.
The five-story buff brick building is seven bays wide and ten bays deep. It has a simple arched front entrance and a cast cornice above the first floor. The front of the building rises to a modillioned cornice and gabled parapet with pierced openings.
