The Artist: Elizabeth Vance has been a fine-art photographer for over 17 years, mostly in documentary style nature. She has always been interested in the idea of the liminal state — the moment between what something or someone was and what they become — and this has been the focus of most of her work. Since the birth of her first child, she has been fascinated with photographing children. They are in a constant state of change, the very essence of liminality. I try to capture the moment that defines who the child is at that point in time. I love catching them in discovery. My favorite moments are when a parent sees her proofs for the first time and says, "That's him! That's exactly what he's like!" That's how I know I've been successful. In addition to her personal work, Ms. Vance has also worked for the US Navy, The Smithsonian Institution, and private studios. Her educational background is in Anthropology and Fine Art. Professional memberships include: Professional Photographers of America (PPA); Virginia Professional Photographers of America (VPPA); and Society for Photographic Education (SPE).
