AFJROTC Color Guard is an important function of JROTC. The Del Rio High School Color Guard is responsible for presenting and showing respect for the American, Texas, School, and JROTC Unit flags. Some of the duties involve presenting colors at school sporting events, important school functions, and other important community activities. A person on color guard must have a flexible schedule and be able to attend practice often. A usual detail consists of four to six cadets, and the detail is ordered by the cadets' height. Selection for a guard depends on your willingness to practice and your availability.
The Del Rio High School Color Guard group may be called upon at any time to present the colors of the United States at memorials, parades, funerals, and other special military ceremonies. At these special events, the Color Guard is expected to display the utmost military bearing and pride. They are giving the ultimate honor to those individuals who have fought and sometimes died for their country. The Color Guard represents America and her armed forces, and we must perform up to our highest standards to pay tribute who those who went before.
Another part of Color Guard is competing in various JROTC events, especially drill meets and other competitions. At these events, the Color Guard helps represent Del Rio High School along with the Drill Teams. The Color Guard commander leads the detail in the performance and is responsible for learning the drill sequence for the meet, as well as practicing and performing it. Competition Color Guards consist of the American and Texas flags with two armed guards. They perform a list of commands required for the performance including uncasing and casing the colors, and other flag movements.
Being part of Color Guard is an extremely rewarding experience. When you're honoring your country, school, and unit by presenting the colors, you get a sense of pride and respect. Everyone is looking at you during a performance and you have the opportunity to display American pride to the public. Members of the Color Guard are also awarded the Color Guard Ribbon and members who compete at drill meets, and attend 75% of practice, have the privelage of wearing the Color Guard Rope.
