The Relevance of Lent**

Why is it that we are encouraged to fast, give alms and pray, in short to mortify
ourselves particularly during Lent, the season of preparation for Eastertide?
It is well known that people only really begin to understand the suffering
of others through their own hard times. And so it is likely that
those fortunate enough to have escaped serious troubles in their own lives
may very well never have developed empathy. Now supposing God wants all of us to
have the capacity to understand, to share and to some extent to bear
the burdens of others. Would it not be logical to ask that we voluntarily
accept a little suffering and give it up in honor of Our Lord who suffered for
us. Lenten observances are not merely arcane or quaint customs. They are firmly
rooted in human psychology. They turn the heart to a remembrance of those
who are sick and suffering, those who are most easily forgotten in this
world - the lonely and destitute. After all isn't the worst fate of all to be alone
and forgotten in one's suffering. Lent and similar occasions asks us to
share in suffering to a limited extent and thereby counteract the ever
present tendancy to forget the lonely and destitute. Let us not wait for our
own misfortunes to examine and understand the meaning and the reality
of suffering. Let us learn through the gentle diciplines of the Church.

A HYMN

Oh the pain and the sorrow that i have seen
Has caused me to be unbelieving
As I gaze on tomorrow the song that I sing
Is a hymn to the times I am leaving

And a voice in my heart keeps telling me
That there's reason enough for my grieving
                         And so i continually grieve

A rememberance of joy or a sad memory
Bids us ponder upon their true meaning
Though their passing is certain and none can deny
Still I hope and I pray for redeeming

But a voice in my mind keeps me aware
Of a mystery beyond my poor gleaning
And yet I continue to glean

As I gaze on my loved ones and see the bright smile
i know that my life's sorrows dwindling
And i know that above One is caring the while
And i know that my life's joys rekindling

And a voice in my soul is telling us all
To press on with a faith ever strengthening
And so I will always believe.

                                                   -J.Ferrara

Anyone who listen is fundamentally open. Without such openness to one another
there is no genuine human bond. When two people understand each other, this does not
mean that one person "understands" the other. Similarly, "to hear and obey someone"
(auf jemanden horen) does not mean simply that we do blindly what the other desires.
We call such a person slavish (horig). Openness to the other, then, involves recognizing
that I myself must accept some things that are againt me, even though no one else
forces me to do so.
Gadamer

A Prayer By SAINT AUGUSTINE

Holy Spirit, powerful Consoler, Sacred Bond of the Father and the Son, Hope of the afflicted, descend into my heart and establish in it Your loving dominion. Enkindle in my tepid soul the fire of Your Love so that I may be wholly subject to You. We believe that when You dwell in us, You also prepare a dwelling for the Father and the Son. Deign, therefore, to come to me, Consoler of abandoned souls, and Protector of the needy. Help the afflicted, strengthen the weak, and support the wavering. Come and purify me. Let no evil desire take possession of me. You love the humble and resist the proud. Come to me, glory of the living, and hope of the dying. Lead me by Your grace that I may always be pleasing to You. Amen.
