Whitehall

Whitehall Mansion, former home of Cassius M.Clay, has long been said to be haunted, with many sightings reported over the years. Some say the ghost is of Clay himself, others say there are several ghosts and that at least one of them is from one of the two men Clay shot and killed in the library room. Other possibilities are Samuel M.Brown, who Clay killed in a duel at Russell Cave in 1843, and Cyrus Turner, who Clay stabbed in a fight in 1849.

Though I haven't personally seen a ghost here myself, once while taking the guided tour (given by women dressed in period costumes), I began having feelings of anxiety just as we were about to go up to the third floor. The anxiety was pronounced enough that I excused myself from the rest of the tour, simply saying that I didn't feel well. Suddenly the tour lady seemed very agitated and said that actually she didn't feel well either , and, trembling, excused herself and went to go call for another guide to replace her for the rest of the tour!

Whitehall is just outside of Richmond on U.S. 25, or you can get there by taking the Winchester/Boonesboro exit off I-75 and follow the clearly marked road behind the Shell station.

By the way, did you know that Clay married a 15-year-old girl when he was 89?
