Life Goes On Part Five By Ricci *Quick translation: Toshokan - library Meishi - visiting-card "Well..." Shigeko said and felt quite uneasy. What was she supposed to say to this young man? He didn't even know who he was. Chiba Mamoru, that was what his driver's licence said, but his whole life had been extinguished. She pulled herself together and plastered a smile on her face. "If you want you can stop by. Just in case you need someone to talk. This is my address." She handed him her meishi*. How lonely he looked, sitting there on the bed. "The address on the back is where I work. The Toukyou Toshokan. We got some really interesting new paperbacks..." She stopped talking as she saw that he wasn't listening. He just stared at the card in his hand. "Okay, Chiba-san..." Stupid! How stupid she sounded! She grabbed her coat and went out of the room. He didn't even notice. Mamoru knew he was being unfair. After all, she had saved his life. The psychiatrist said he wasn't sure, why Mamoru had fallen from the bridge, and in the beginning it had looked as though they planned to keep him in a psychiatric hospital, but since he had lost his memory they couldn't be sure that it had been a suicide attempt. Fortunately he had had his driver's licence with him, otherwise he wouldn't even know that his name was Chiba Mamoru. Chiba Mamoru... the name was supposed to sound familiar in his ears, but it didn't. There was just blckness, where emotion should be. The pain in his head was over by now, but his inner pain grew bigger every day. He looked at the meishi. Toukyou Toshokan. Sounded... good. Maybe he would visit her. She was the only person he knew out there. Slowly he unlocked the door to the appartment. No, HIS appartment. The door opened and revealed the neat and tiny little home of Chiba Mamoru. Everything was very clean. So he was an orderly person. There was not much furniture, just enough to be comfortable. It didn't look expensive, but it didn't look cheap either. He liked it. Of course you like it! He scolded himself. Seems as though you bought it! He kicked the door shut when he noticed that it was still open. Slowly he wandered through the rooms, watching the dust dance in the vertical afternoon sunrays that painted strange patterns on the carpet. He felt like an intruder. Sometimes he would stop, take a book or a glass and just hold it, feeling the surface and trying to remember if he had read the book, when he had last drunken out of this glass. It was so quiet. The bed was made and looked very simple with its steel frame. Had he been lying here? Sleeping, dreaming? He couldn't tell. He sat down and crossed his legs, lifting one leg and then the other one, very slowly as if experiencing the movement of his muscles for the first time. The sun warmed his back, making him feel like being in a warm embrace. His look fell on a photo in a frame, that stood beside his bed on a night table. He reached over and took it in both hands. It showed him and a beautiful young girl in a park. She looked gorgeous with her long golden tresses and those summersky-blue eyes. She smiled. Her whole expression was one of joy and sheer love. Obviously she was his girlfriend. Maybe that was where he could start to get his memory back. If she was his girlfriend then there had to be an addressbook with her number or something like that. He put the frame back on the night table and went to a broad desk, opening every drawer and searching. "Shiko? Shiko! Look what I found!" Shigeko sighed. Not again! Hurricane Kelly was on her way, and the determination on her face showed her, that she couldn't be distracted from whatever she found. By the way.. looking at Kelly's face Shigeko realized that the younger girl looked like she was in a fight. With books? Her hair was covered with dust, and the tip of her nose was blck, which made her actually look very cute. The right sleeve of her sweater was torn and revealed her white skin. In heigth of her knee their was a huge hole in her jeans. "Kelly? What did you do?" Shigeko managed to hide a smile. Kelly eyes were burning with excitement. "Look what I found! You won't believe it! I can hardly believe it myself! All these years-" "Calm down Kelly!! Where have you been, what did you do there and what did you find?" "This!" was Kelly's answer, and she gave Shigeko some old book. Shigeko took it carefully. Actually it was a VERY old book, judging from the consistence of the pages. "Where did you find this? I have never seen such an old book before!" Shigeko stared at it in wonder, therefore she missed the blush on Kelly's cheeks. "Well, I was just dusting some of the shelves... and I really didn't mean to do it, I just lost balance and then I grabbed one shelf and I still lost balance and then I realized that the shelves were coming down and next thing I remember is sitting there in a pile of books and dust between the shelves and voila there it is!" Shigeko frowned and looked at Kelly who tried desperately not to look guilty but failed miserably. "Hmm... as long as Kurato-san doesn't know about this 'accident' - I guess you're safe." Shigeko knew that Kelly hadn't exactly 'dusted' the books. Everytime Kurato-san bought a new book that interested Kelly, she grabbed it and hid it behind a row of books on another shelf. Kelly had several of those secret places, and Shigeko suspected that she had been looking for one of her 'treasures' when this accident had happened. "Thanks, Shiko, you're wonderful!" And off she was before Shigeko could scold her. That girl!! She remebered the book and took it to her private room, where she could analyze it. "Amazing! This is really amazing!" Shigeko couldn't believe it! The book was at least eight hundred years old. That was nearly impossible, but it was true. It showed only minor signs of devastation, and the pages were made of a material she didn't know. She knew that she was supposed to hand this over to Kurato-san this very second, but she couldn't resist. She HAD to know what it contained. Carefully she opened it and tried to decipher the strange Kana*. At least they looked like Kana. No, they were different. She activated her computer and scanned the page to compare it with every known script. No match. That couldn't be! There had to be similarities, to the old Japanese - to anything! "OH! The tale of the two torn hearts! Sounds good..." Shigeko started at Kelly's voice, but then she realized that Kelly referred to the title of the book. "You- you can read it?!?" Kelly snapped out of the dreamlike state she had been in while watching the book. "Why, yes..." Shigeko grabbed Kelly's arm. "Do you know that I compared this to every script my computer could find? To every script scientists ever found? My computer couldn't find ANY, and you just walk in and CAN READ IT???" Fear began to show in Kelly's eyes, and Shigeko let go of her arm, when it came to her that she had yelled the last sentence. "I-I-I d-don't know w-why I c-c-can read it..." stammered Kelly, as tears welled up in her eyes. "It's okay, Kelly. I didn't mean to yell at you. I'm very sorry. But - is it true? Can you really read this script?" Shigeko stood up and offered Kelly her seat. Still a little bit afraid Kelly sat down and lowered her gaze to the open book in front of her. "The Tale of the Two Torn Hearts This happened long ago and was told to Us by the people We trust and honor. We have died when They died, and Our time ticks away. This book is Our testament for the generations that will walk over the dust of Our bodies. She who fights the darkness came down to offer Us her Silver Guardian, made of light, made of strength, made of the blood from Our hearts. We feared her, We feared him, We betrayed them. We killed him in a battle of darkness and despair. It was then that she took away the most precious thing We had. She was gone, he was gone, We were alone and desperate. The curse of the Silver Guardian's death haunted Us, until We numbered only four hands. And what was worst, no children descended from the wind anymore. We sacrificed the last two children to soothe her, we sacrificed Our hands, but she never spoke to Us again. Some went into the fire and slipped away in the darkness. Now We are alone. All We have is the memory of the Silver Days where light shone in Our hearts and laughter filled the air. " Kelly stopped reading and looked at Shigeko. "What do you think this means?" Shigeko shrugged and frowned. "Read on, would you? Maybe we find out later." Kelly nodded. "Now the script changes... I guess another writer took over, or continued it. But I'm not sure. "Here I stand, on the dust of their bodies. Fools that they were. My eyes have been touched by the light and opened to see the truth they denied all the time. The time of my kin is over, and I wished so much to make them see the light, make them recognize the divine order she made and holds steady. But they wouldn't see. Fools. A fool I am myself, for believing them.Until his last breath my father assumed it was her doing that there weren't any children descending from the wind while they fled. His fault it was, only his! Those superstitious people... they are not my kin, I deny it! I belong to her glory, her wisdom and her light. Forever." Sorry this part is so short! I'm kinda busy, but the story will continue, ,no matter how short the chapters are. What do You think about it? Any idea where this is leading? It seemed all so easy in the last part, didn't it?
