Room-mates and Soul Mates - Part 1 By: Roo Email: roovel@aol.com A twenty year old woman with long blond hair down to her hips, wearing jeans and a t-shirt and carrying two suitcases, entered the tall building that was called Sydney Apartments, and walked over to the reception desk. She cleared her throat to receive the attention of the receptionist. "Excuse me, I rented a room earlier under the name of Serena Tsukino..." "Good afternoon, Miss Tsukino," said the friendly receptionist. "We have been expecting you," Follow me, please," she said as she stood up. The receptionist had her brown hair up in a French twist and wore a brown mini-skirt and a white blouse, which was the woman’s uniform for the staff of the apartments. They walked over the marble floor to the lifts. "As you know, you will be living with a room-mate," the receptionist said after she had pressed the up button to the lifts. "Yes," Serena said as the lift doors opened and they stepped in. "You will be staying on the third floor. That's where all the uni students live. They arrived at the floor, and they stepped out to see hallways to the front, left and right. They turned left. "Your room is number three hundred and thirty four," the receptionist said as they passed a few rooms. "Here we are. Your room-mate should be here." She knocked on the door. "Coming!" a deep voice said on the other side. A man with dark hair and dark blue eyes opened the door He wore jeans and a pale pink shirt. "Meatball Head?!" "Don't tell me *he's* my room mate," Serena said to the receptionist. "You know each other! Well that's good. I have to get back down stairs now. Have a nice day." She left as Serena entered the room with her suitcases. The apartment was a huge two bedroom room with a lounge, kitchen and a bathroom. "What are *you* doing here?" Darien asked. "That's a nice thing to say to your friend," Serena said sarcastically. "You were never considered as my friend, throwing shoes and test papers at me, Meatball Head," Darien said with a smile. "Well if you had stopped calling me that, maybe I would have stopped!" Serena said, angrily. "You haven't changed a bit, creep." "I guess you haven't either, Meatball Head. Your room is the one on the right," he said pointing to a door to the right. Serena took her suitcases, walked through the lounge area and entered a big room with a single bed, table and chair and a wardrobe. She put her suitcases on the floor, and decided to unpack later. "Come over here!" Darien yelled. Serena walked to the lounge and sat down on one of the two couches. "What do you want?" "I was just wondering what you were doing here," Darien said. "You *are* my room-mate, and it would be nice to know a little about you." "Okay, but I have to know about you too." Darien nodded. "Well, I got accepted to Sydney Uni. I had attended Tokyo Uni before, though." Serena said. She also came here because of the Negaverse attacks, but of course she wouldn't tell Darien that she was Sailor Moon. "*You* got accepted to Sydney Uni?! Now, that I can't believe." Serena stared at him angrily. "How is Tokyo?" Darien asked. "I heard that there has been a lot of Negaverse attacks lately." "Yeah, there has been. But Sailor Moon has taken care of them." "You mean she's beaten them?" Darien asked, surprised. "Not exactly. But reports say that the Negaverse are headed south, here." Darien nodded. "Tuxedo Mask takes care of that." "Tuxedo Mask? Who's that?" "Well..." Darien said, carefully since hardly anyone saw the masked man. "I don't really know," Darien lied. "I guess he wears a tuxedo and a mask." Darien smiled. "Anybody would guess that. How long have been here?" "About four years, now." "Oh, really? I wondered where you had gone after I had stopped bumping into you regularly." "If I had bumped into you any longer, my head would look like the mountains." "Ha, ha, ha," Serena said sarcastically. "That's the funniest thing I've ever heard." "I know." He smiled. Serena gave him a sarcastic smile. They sat in a comfortable silence for a minute. "Now that you have lived here four years, are you an Australian citizen?" "Yep. Are you going to be an Australian citizen?" Darien asked. "Maybe. Don't know if I will go back to Japan in a couple of years." "Got a boyfriend, do you?" "Don't get so personal, mister! And no, I don't have a boyfriend." Serena sighed. "How's Raye?" "Raye? Oh, yeah! You were her boyfriend. She's okay, but when you disappeared, she got worried." "I wasn't her boyfriend," he said. "Just a good friend." "Yeah, sure," she said with a sly smile. "She's got a new boyfriend anyway." "That's good to hear." "How 'bout you?" "What about me?" "Do you have a girlfriend?" "No, I don't." "Did I hear right? Darien *not* having a girlfriend? Every girl in Tokyo fantasised being with you, and now you *don't have* a girlfriend." Serena laughed. "Including you?" Darien asked, a slight smirk playing on his lips. Serena stopped laughing. "Including me?" "Did you fantasise being with me?" "Me?! Fantasise being with you?!" she said, taking hold of the nearby t.v guide and rolling it. "How dare you even think of that!" She said as she started hitting him in the head with the rolled up magazine. Darien started laughing. "Just like old times, hey?" Serena groaned as she started hitting him harder and he tried to get a hold of the magazine. "I'm hungry, what are we having for lunch?" Serena asked Darien after she had given him a few bruises, unpacked, taken a shower and changed into denim shorts and a white top. Darien was lounging on the couch reading a magazine. "I don't know, what ever you want," he said, not looking up from the magazine. "Oh, come on," she said, snatching the magazine away from him. "Get up and we'll go to a nearby restaurant." Darien was silent. "Okay! Okay! I'm sorry, for hurting you. Happy?" "Yep," he said getting onto his feet. "I'm starved, lets have something to eat," he said as he headed to the door. Serena groaned, picked up her small back pack and followed him out the door. "So what do you wanna eat?" Darien asked Serena as they reached the footpaths of a busy Sydney. "I dunno," Serena said. "What do you wanna eat?" "Don't you know any good places?" "We'll go to 'Sizzler'," Darien said, walking the other direction. "Hey! Wait up!" Serena said, catching up to him. Darien shoved his hands in his pockets and kept walking with Serena beside him. "How's Andrew doing?" Darien asked, breaking the uncomfortable silence. "He's good. He's getting married to Rita next month," Serena replied. "Next month?" Darien asked, surprised. "I thought it was in six months." "It *was* six months five months ago," Serena replied, smartly. "I think I know that, Meatball Head. Guess you feel sad about seeing your crush getting married, hey?" He smiled. Serena was angry. "I *never* had a crush on him...!" "Oh yes you did," Darien teased. "You told me once that you thought Andrew liked you. *Remember*!" Darien teased again. "Oh Andrew, kiss me!" Darien imitated Serena, making kissing noises with his lips. "*WHY YOU CREEP!*" Serena shouted, trying to slap him. He dodged the attack easily and ran away from her. Of course, Serena followed angrily. She followed Darien into a restaurant where he had sat down at a two seater table. "Grow up, Chiba!" She sat down, placing her bag on the floor, next to her. Darien chuckled. "Ughh! Don't you laugh at me! You immature low-life moron!" "OOH! Big words for little Meatball Head," Darien said, a smile on him face. "I'm *very* impressed Serena," he said sarcastically. Serena ignored him and looked at the menu. "You ate a lot less than I thought you would," Darien said as they exited the restaurant. "Yeah, well, things change," she said, still angry. "I have to go to work now," Darien said as he checked his watch. "Where do you work?" Serena asked, not really concerned. "At the ice rink." "Really? Oh, wow! Can I come?" "Well it *is* opened to the public, so I guess so." "That's great." She smiled. They walked to the ice-skating rink and arrived there in a few minutes. There were a lot of people skating. "So what do you do here?" Serena asked. "I just have to skate around and make sure people are obeying the rules," Darien said as he put his skates on. "Hey, Darien!" said a girl with short brown hair and light green eyes. "Hi, Jane," Darien said as the girl came closer. "Who's this?" Jane asked, pointing to Serena. "This is Serena Tsukino. Serena, Jane Young." "Hi, pleasure to meet you," Serena said as she smiled. "You too," she said in a British accent as she smiled. "Chiba! Young!" yelled a plump man, walking towards them. "Get on the ice, now!" Darien immediately went on. "Hurry up, Young," the man said, once he was next them. "I-I'm sorry, sir," Jane said. "My doctor said I should stay off the ice and rest for six months for my knee to heal," she said, pointing to her bandaged knee. "So why did you come here in the first place!?" yelled the man. "Who's going to take your place?" "I could," Serena offered. Jane's and the man's heads turned toward Serena. "You?" Jane said happily. "Could you pleease!" she said, grabbing Serena's hand. "Sure, happy too. I need the money too." "Right," said the man. "Your name?" "Serena Tsukino." "Put your skates on now, and hit the ice!" "Y-yes sir!" The man left. "Thank you *soo* much, Serena." "That's okay." She smiled. Serena carefully went on the ice, and picked up speed a few seconds later. Last year she was one of the best ice-skaters/dancers in her school. "Hey, where's Jane?" Darien asked as he skated beside Serena. "She told me to tell you that she won't be skating for six months because she has an injured knee." "Oh.." "And I'm taking her job." "You?! Don't make me laugh, Meatball Head." Serena glared at him. "I *am* taking her place if you like it or not!" She skated faster, leaving him behind. "WHAAA!!!" cried a little girl who had fallen on her bottom. Serena and Darien skated over to the girl who had short green hair and tears coming out of her blue eyes. He hair was in pigtails. "What's the matter?" Serena said as they reached the girl. "What does it look like, Meatball Head. She fell." Serena groaned and helped the girl up. "It's okay," Serena said. "Where's your mummy?" The girl cried more. "Let me handle this," Darien said, crouching down so his face was levelled with the little girl's. "It's okay. Here," Darien said as he produced a red rose out of thin air. "Cheer up." The girl stopped crying and took the rose. "Thank you," she mumbled, then smiled. Serena smiled then didn't smile as Darien got up and the girl skated away. "Where'd ya learn that," Serena said, not really asking. "The rose trick? That's a secret," Darien smiled slightly. "Yeah, whatever," she said, then started skating again. "I don't believe this!" Darien said to his coach. The thin coach with brown hair eyes said, "I know, Darien. One month till the competition and Jane has a knee injury." Darien was outside of the rink, but still had his skates on. "There's going to be trials tomorrow; you chose your partner," the coach said. "Tomorrow...okay." Darien sighed. "Be here at 8am sharp." The coach left. "What's up?" Serena asked Darien from inside the rink, at the barrier. "My skating partner had a knee injury," Darien said, tiredly. "Ha! Suck eggs!" Serena said as she stepped off the rink. "Thanks for the help, Meatball Head." "Welcome!" she said as she walked away from him and bumped into someone. "Jane! How are ya?" Serena asked. "Fine, fine. But could you do me a *huge* favour?" "Mmm...depends..." "I have a ice skating class tomorrow morning, and of course you know that I can't teach now..." "So you want me to teach? Sure! I'd love to!" "Thank you so much, Serena," Jane said as she hugged Serena. "You *do* have teaching experience, don't you?" "Yes." Serena smiled. "Do you know where Darien is?" Jane asked. "He's round the corner. He's a bit pissed off at the moment 'cause his ice-skating partner had an injury." Jane nodded. "That is me." "You?" "Yeah...see ya later, 'kay?" she said as she walked backwards slowly. "Bye!" Serena waved. "Your dinner's on the table," Serena said to Darien as he entered their apartment. Serena was seated on the couch, eating her dinner. "Thanks, Meatball Head," he said as he walked to the kitchen table. "Hmm. You made your trademark favourite...spaghetti and meatballs. "Shut up, Chiba and at least appreciate it," she said, her eyes glued on the television. He took the plate of food, sat on the couch and started eating. "What took you so long to get back?" Serena asked. "M.Y.O.B," Darien said. "Fine," she said, getting up and heading towards the kitchen to wash her plate. "I'm going to bed," she said, passing the lounge area. "Good night," she said as she entered her bedroom. "Good night." "Beep! Beep!" went Serena's alarm clock. Her hand extended to the clock and pressed a button to stop the sound. She got out of bed and got changed into jeans and a white top. She walked out of her room and walked into the kitchen where Darien was. "Whoa!" he said. "Am I seeing things or are you really up early?" He wore jeans, a black tank top and a green jacket. Serena ignored the statement. "Good morning to you, too," she said, turning the kettle on. "Now *this* I have to get used to," he said with a smile. "Why are you up so early? It's a Sunday." "Duh! Think I realised that," she said, walking to the fridge. I'm taking Jane's classes." "You?!" "Why is it that whenever I take Jane's place in something you don't believe me?" she said to him with a carton of milk in her hands. "I don't see you as the ice-skating type," Darien said. "I mean, you couldn't even walk three steps without falling over." "As I said before, *things change,* Chiba." "So you *do* know how to teach, don't you?" "Of course I do!" "Michelle," Serena said, looking at the clip- board in her hand with a piece of paper of her students name's on it. "Here!" said a eleven year old girl. All Serena and her students were on the ice, wearing ice- skating outfits. "Good," Serena said. "Everyone's here." "Where's Jane?" a girl asked. "She's had a knee injury, so I'll be taking her place for a while." She smiled. "So, what have you learned so far from Jane?" "Balancing," said a girl. "Skating backwards." "Pivoting." "That's about it," said another girl. "Okay," Serena said. "You've learned all the basics. Skate around the rink four times to warm up," she said. "Now!" They quickly went. Serena watched them, then saw Darien on the other side, trying to get a good ice-skating partner. She then decided to join her class and started to skate fast with them. "Is that as fast as you can go?" Serena said, skating backwards. "Come on, class. You can go faster than that." They all started to skate a little faster. "Hey, Tsukino!" said the thin thirty year old coach. "Stay on your side of the rink!" Serena saluted to him as she moved to her side of the rink. Darien watched Serena skating and was very impressed. "I didn't know you knew her, Coach Bradley," Darien said to his coach. "Yeah...we go back a long way." "That was great!" Serena said to her class at the end of the lesson. "You are great class." "Coach Bradley said that you can do three double axles in a row," said a stubborn looking girl with red hair and dark blue eyes. "Coach Bradley?" she asked, looking at Coach Bradley across the rink. Their eyes met in recognition. "You can never believe what coach Bradley says," she said. "Anyway, see you next week, okay?" Serena said to her class, skating backwards to the other end of the rink. "Bye!" her class said. Serena turned around and skated toward Coach Bradley and Darien. "Found a partner yet?" Serena said once she was next to them. "No, not yet," Darien said, tiredly. "Long time, no see," Coach Bradley said with a smile. "Hmm. Nice to see you again, Bradley." Serena smiled. "That's *Coach* Bradley for you." "What ever. And why did you tell Jane's class that I can do three double axles in a row?" "Well it wasn't a lie..." "Wow! Hold on a minute," Darien said. "*You* can do three double axles in row?!" "No," Serena said. "Yes, she can," Coach Bradley said. Serena glared at him. "How do you two *exactly* know each other?" "She was my skating partner for a couple of years." Darien was surprised. "But I thought you said that you won all the competition's you entered." "Yeah, so...?" Coach Bradley said. "No," Serena said. "What the creep is trying to tell you is that he can't believe you won competitions with me," Serena said angrily, "You know him? Well isn't it a small world! *And* you came in the right time too!" Bradley said. "Don't even think about it, Bradley," Serena said sternly. "Why not? You two will be good together!" "I wouldn't do it if my life depended on it," Serena said. "Are you saying that I skate with Serena?" Darien said. "Ha! *No way!*" "Excuse me. I have some things to do," she said, skating away. Coach Bradley followed her and grabbed her hand, forcing her to face him. "Remember this song?" he asked Serena as they were skating to a familiar song. "Maybe," Serena said. "Come on," he whispered. "Only once." She had no time to answer him as he had picked up speed and started perform a routine with Serena; one that they performed so long ago. Darien quickly stepped off the ice rink as they performed a sophisticated routine. He was *very* surprised. Once the music had slowed down, ending, Serena and Coach Bradley skated face to face. "If you're not going to enter with Darien, for the partners, enter the woman’s," he whispered. "I might consider it," she said with a smile. "That's good." "There's a lot more than a *friendship* between you and Coach Bradley, isn't there?" Darien asked, as he and Serena entered their apartment. "M.Y.O.B, Chiba," Serena said as she sat on the coach and turned the television on. "So there is," Darien said with a broad smile on his face. "No, there isn't, Chiba." "Sure, sure," he said with a smirk. Serena caught the smirk on his face and said, "Whipe that smirk off your face, Chiba!" "And why should I?" "OOHHH!!! I'd rather *die* than live with you!" "I'd rather-" Bring! Bring! The telephone rang. "I'll get it," Darien said as he reached the phone, just before Serena did. "Hello? Serena? Hold on please." He handed the phone to Serena. "Who is it?" "How should I know?" "You could have at least asked," she said as she took the cordless phone from him. "Hello? Lita! How are you?" On the other end, Lita was in her bedroom, talking on the phone. "I'm fine, fine." She smiled. "You?" "I'm being tortured! Guess who's my room- mate." Darien heard what Serena had said and looked a little hurt. "I don't know," Lita said. "Darien," Serena said, flatly. "Darien? Darien Chiba? You're *so* lucky!" "Lucky...?! "Didn't you have a crush on him?" "I did *not* have a crush on him!" Serena said. Of course Darien heard, and Serena blushed. "I'm *very* flattered, Meatball Head," Darien said. "Shut up." "What?" Lita said. "No, not you. Darien." "Oh. You two don't get along, do you?" "Now you only realised?" "Something really important came up," Lita said, seriously. "What?" "Remember Zoisite?" "Zoisite?" That name immediately got Darien's attention. Serena walked with the cordless phone toward her room. "Yeah, I remember her," Serena said as she entered her room and sat on her bed. "She died in Australia, and her *boy-friend* is going to avenge her death. So I'm warning you; he is *very* dangerous." "Who killed her?" "Someone called Tuxedo Mask...? "Tuxedo Mask?" she asked, surprised. "Yeah. You know him?" "Darien told me about him." "So how do *you* know this?" "You'll have to ask Luna that." "So what do I do now?" Serena asked as she ran her fingers through her bangs, tiredly. "Hold on, Luna wants to talk to you." Serena heard the phone be passed. "Hello, Serena?" Luna said. "Luna? Are you holding the phone? I'd like to see *that*!" Serena said with a smile. "Serena, remember your mission is to retrieve the Silver Imperial Crystal and to find the Moon Princess." "Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know Luna," she said with a yawn. "What time is it over there?" "1:37. Why?" "1:37?!? And you're sleepy! Stay alert, Serena." "I'm going out for lunch," Darien yelled from the lounge area. "Wanna come, Meatball Head." "Meatball Head," Luna said. "Where have I heard that before...?" "That was Darien - " "Darien!? What's *he* doing there?" "He's my room-mate. I've gotta go, Luna. Say hello to Raye and Amy, for me. See ya!" "Wait! Sere-" Serena hung up and exited her room. "Took ya long enough," Darien said. "Could you do me a favour?" Serena asked Darien as she picked up her small hand bag, which she had come there in the first place to do. "What?" "*Shut up!*" "No can do, Meatball Head," he said with a huge smile. Serena groaned as they exited the apartment. As they exited the building, Serena bumped into somebody. "Old habits coming back, Meatball Head?" Darien asked as he and Serena started to pick things up the lady dropped. "Shut up, Chiba." "Chiba?" said the lady. "Oh, Darien! How are you?" she said, also picking things up. "Hello, Mrs Johnson," Darien said, standing up. Serena and Mrs Johnson stood up too. "And who is this!" Mrs Johnson squealed. "This is Serena Tsukino," Darien said. "Nice to meet you, Mrs Johnson?" "Yes, yes," she said with a smile. "I run the editorial at the Sydney Uni. I heard that you'll be joining us?" "Yes..." "Oh, wonderful! Would you like to be one of the journalists?" she asked. "No one can be bothered anymore," she said sadly, shaking her head. "Oh. I'll think about it," Serena said as she smiled. "Oh that will be great! Oh! I'm late for an appointment," she said, walking away slowly. "Bye!" "Bye!" "Come on, lets eat." "Don't you know any other places?" Serena asked as they entered 'Sizzlers'. "It's the closest one, and knowing you, it's better," Darien said as they sat down at a table, next to the window where they could see the street. "What's that suppose to mean?!" "Do you always have to get so angry?" he said with a teasing smile. "When you're around, it's natural." He chuckled. "AAHHH!!! Monster!" screamed someone, in the kitchen. Serena thought. "What was that?" Darien asked, knowing exactly what it was. "I have to go to the bathroom," Serena said, rushing there. She went there, transformed and then arrived at the kitchen where there was a monster throwing utensils. It was big and red, huge eyes and was wearing a chef's outfit. "Hey, you!" Sailor Moon said, standing on a bench top. "How dare you steal people's energy! I am Sailor Moon, and in the name of the moon, I will punish you!" "Sailor Moon?" a man in a suit whispered, in the shadows. "Punish *me*?" said the monster. "Ha! In your dreams, blondie!" It started spurting out utensils. Sailor Moon dodged them easily, landing on the floor. "Moon...Tiara-" Whack! She got kicked by the monster, to the back wall, causing her to drop her weapon. "I don't want you, I want Tuxedo Mask. Where is he?!!" "I...don't...know," she said, clutching her shoulder in pain. "Liar! Where is he!!!" he said, grabbing Sailor Moon's shoulder's, causing her to scream in pain. "Here I am," Tuxedo Mask said, throwing a rose, grazing the monster's arm. "Here you are," the monster said, bitterly. "I was sent by Malachite, to kill you." "Malachite can't do his own dirty work, hey?" "Don't speak about my master like that!!!" he shouted, attacking him. Tuxedo Mask moved away, extending his cane. "Remember, I wasn't the one who killed Zoisite. She's the one who had a little *accident* off the building. "Grrr!" growled the monster. Sailor Moon got up, in pain and picked up her tiara. The monster produced a barbecue fork and threw it at Tuxedo Mask. Tuxedo Mask ducked, and said, "Missed." "Look out!" Sailor Moon said, pushing Tuxedo Mask out of the way, landing in a tangled heap. The fork actually had hit a saucepan and then bounced back, heading towards Tuxedo Mask. "You okay?" Sailor Moon asked, her face buried in Tuxedo Mask's chest, as she couldn't get since her shoulder was aching. she thought. "Yeah, thanks to you," he said, picking her up gently, and laying her beside him. "Stay here. I'll handle it." He threw roses, making the creature much weaker. Sailor Moon stood up in pain, took hold of her tiara and said, "Moon...Tiara...Action!" "AAAHHHH!!!" screamed the monster. It turned into a human wearing a chef's outfit. He was unconscious. "Good work, Sailor Moon." Tuxedo Mask said, walking away. "Wait!" She was too late as he jumped onto the bench top and out the skylight. She sighed. "What a hunk," she whispered. TO BE CONTINUED...
