This story is a new telling of the downfall of the Moon Kingdom, using the myth of The Crow. Thank you for reading! ******************************************** "People once believed that when a person died, A crow carried their soul to the land of the dead. But sometimes, something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it; and the soul can't rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to make the wrong things right." ******************************************** THE CROW: SERENITY ACT ONE ******************************************** Darkness. He feels the soft wet dirt as he struggles upward. It's so dark. No air. His hand breaks through to the surface and he frantically pulls himself out. Quietness. He lays on the ground. His heart is pounding from fear. No thoughts are in his mind. Coldness. A large bird--a crow--appears out of nowhere and lands next to him. One of its deep black eyes stare deep into him. "I told you not to look." ******************************************** Visions of a past. He sees her amid the crowd of guests. They are laughing, talking, singing. But she stands alone, a smile on her lips, waiting for him. He goes to her and whispers something. She laughs softly. They grasp hands and begin to dance. Her eyes shine like the very earthlit waters. She is so beautiful. Then a promise...a promise to... ******************************************** Pain. He falls to his knees and grasps his chest. The crow lites upon his shoulder. "Do you remember?" He looks up and sees a broken dream. A castle in ruins. Only one part remains partially standing. It is the grand ballroom. He crawls through the rubble to get inside. Everything is broken, everything is torn, everything is destroyed. Nothing. Then whispers. ******************************************** "I love you," she says. She smiles when she says that and then holds him tight. She is so warm...so soft...oh God, she is so soft...Her long golden hair flows around her as she twirls around to make him laugh. And then they kiss. Shouting. Screams. They had come upon them too suddenly. They were everywhere. He fights but there are too many. The evil Queen is not to be denied. He is dragged to the crumbling ballroom, forced to kneel before her. He swears, struggles, curses her name. She laughs. Two men...he sees their faces so clearly...once his allies?...damn them...they hold him. He curses them too, he doesn't care anymore. But then...then two more men bring her in, her delicate form struggling against them... ******************************************** "I love you." ******************************************** No...he struggles harder...no, don't hurt her...She sees him and cries out. She begs for him. They hold him down as the evil Queen draws her sword. A large black bird appears from the sky and lands near him. It waits. Pain. Such pain. He falls to the ground...she is screaming...they push her, grab at her...don't touch her...she breaks free and grabs the sword... "Don't look." Tears stream down her cheeks...she clutches the sword and points it at her heart... "It's better not to look." The blood...oh God, the blood...no...please...Her white dress grows red as she slowly closes her eyes...her arms go limp and she falls to the ground... ******************************************** "Serenity!!!" he screams, her name echoing throughout the ruins. The crow flaps its wings. "Endymion, you shouldn't have looked." ********************************************
