Here are some of my thoughts on my unique approach to astrology. Astrology, like any other science, operates in a very dynamic and ever changing world. Hence it is very important to recognize the importance to interpret the astrological principles based on current conditions. It is very clearly advocated in classical books of astrology to give adequate importance to prevailing conditions and other factors to get accurate and applicable predictions. Most of the illustrations used in the classical texts are no more directly applicable to the current world after several thousands of years.
These thoughts and views are often repeated by me during my personal consultations with my esteemed clients. I have found it to be very useful to explain my approach to clients so that they can appreciate and understand the predictions more objectively. I have tried to achieve the same purpose through this page for my web based client community with which my consultations are mainly through e-mail. I hope this page will serve the purpose well.

Principle
Astrology is both a science and an art. It is backed by well documented calculations and analysis. Basic principles of any analytical science like availability of data, accuracy of the data, factor of error, application of proper error factor to the conclusion and other often used scientific techniques apply to astrology as well. It is an art in the sense that a lot of creative and intuitive skills are required to interpret the predictions. No astrological text can comprehensively illustrate the art of astrological interpretation. Same planetary combination can manifest in several scenarios. A good astrologer uses his intuition and experience to isolate most inapplicable scenarios and gradually perfects the precision of the predictions to make them applicable for an individual.
Many people tend to think that anything and everything can be foreseen using astrology. Although theoretically possible, it is practically impossible. Astrology advocates and considers the impact of planets and other major celestial entities on the life of an individual. However, there are many other factors, celestial only, which do affect an individual's future, in minor ways. Having been a professor of physics, I draw a popular analogy here. While doing many physical experiments, we neglect friction and air resistance under lab conditions. But, these factors are important while one experiments launching a rocket. Since calculating all the physical factors is a cumbersome activity and deviates the focus from the actual endeavor, we approximate these and apply them in the actual calculation with known and accurate data available. We also calculate the margin of errors in the final results. The same principle holds good for astrology as well. We give appropriate weightages to major, well understood and documented celestial entities and approximate other myriad of minor factors. This does affect the accuracy predictions marginally, and a good astrologer adjusts the interpretation based on this margin of error.
Another thing to keep in mind while gauging the predictions is that anything happening in an individual's life is not an isolated event. But, a combination of several events some of which are happening in other individual's life. A person's horoscope can show the events in an individual's horoscope and reasonable coupling to the environment in general. But it can not show all the linkages a person has with other individuals. This is a major factor while predicting the relationship aspect of an individual with others, such as matrimony and business relationships. The accuracy of the predictions is significantly enhanced and becomes more focussed if horoscopes of other individuals are also available. This may not be always possible and we resort to best possible approximations.
Several people ask me to predict their entire life. Once again, I draw a parallel between science and astrology here. In order to get best results out of an experiment, you narrow the range of data. The same principle holds good in astrology also. I always advise my clients to plan their astrological queries for next three to five years of time frame and review with me periodically. Since the world and the life are so dynamic, even if you know what is going to happen, say after 30 years, based on your horoscope, it may not be accurate due to other factors. Popular anecdote I often repeat is : a doctor, after a through physical analysis, may tell that you stand a very high chance of developing a particular disorder after 20 years. Does it make sense for you to buy a medicine right now and keep it ready so that you can use it after 20 years? Of course, not. Many new and better medicines may be invented in the future. Many new techniques of cure may be available at that time, and so on. Therefore, I suggest my clients to keep the period of astrological predictions reasonable to focus the predictions. Then, periodical reviews can be done to see how far things have come true and use that as a feedback to adjust the interpretations based on changing factors.
As an astrologer, while consulting with clients, I always like to inquire about some of the major events happened in their past at specific ages. For example, I ask people with particular planetary combinations if they had a problematic or sick childhood or troubled adulthood, etc. Their frank and true response helps me to gauge accuracy of my predictions. Sometimes the responses I get to my typical questions are entirely contradictory to what I see in their horoscope. What causes it? Wrong data in majority of the cases and unwillingness to provide information in some cases. I consider this as an important exercise to keep my predictions synchronized with the data provided. An analogy here is : in scientific experiments, we try to repeat the experiments under different conditions and see how the result of each iteration differs from an expected value.
Another, rather skeptical, question people ask me is about the guarantee of something happening. There is no reaction without an action. Suppose, if you are an investor and come to me saying that you would like to invest a million dollars in the stock market and how well you will do after six months. I will predict that you will make an excellent profit if your horoscope says so. This is based on the premise that you will invest as you have claimed. After six months, if you come back and say that nothing of that sort happened without investing, then prediction was not wrong but the premise was wrong. It is like a mechanic saying that a particular vehicle can run at 70 mph at the maximum at its peak performance after a through inspection of critical mechanical parts. If you keep the car locked up in the garage, the speedometer is never going to move at all.
Many people inquire about the differences between a basic horoscope and an advanced horoscope. The data required for both is essentially the same, but they serve different purposes. A basic horoscope is recommended to be a general record of birth and can be used for general astrological predictions. It is a sort of a weighted average of all astrological entities. An advanced horoscope is derived from the basic horoscope, but each astrological entity is calculated individually with its own weight. This is highly recommended to predict a particular aspect in detail, such as wealth, health and matrimony. People who are more astrologically inclined and carefully give attention to their astrological positions before every major move are recommended to go for this as specific predictions are significantly focussed with this.
There is an important thing to remember about matching horoscopes for matrimony. Many people know how to match horoscopes for matrimony, which is a rather simple process. However, using the same process to determine compatibility between two individuals for matrimony is not. People tend to ignore many other aspects, such as different 'yogas' and other planetary combinations while matching horoscopes. The process of matching on only compatibility points will not give a full picture. It is like saying 50 silver bars are more worth than 25 gold bars because silver bars more in number. So adequate care must be given to analyze the qualitative factors with quantitative factors. Giving any undue weightage to any one particular factor tends give a skewed image of matrimonial compatibility. Certain stars like 'Moola' and certain planets like 'Mangala' (Mars) in an individual's horoscope are considered to be inauspicious. This is not always entirely true. There could be many 'yogas' operating in that individual's horoscope which may effectively nullify some or all ill effects.
When I recommend a 'pooja' or a specific religious ritual to be performed, the first thing I recommend is to offer a 'pooja' to one's family deity. One need not do that personally by visiting the place if that is not immediately possible due to constraints of time or distance. But, one has to make a sincere thought in one's mind and get the pooja done in a reasonable time period. This is very essential because the family deity is like the root of a tree. Strengthening the root is very important for the overall growth of a plant. Similarly, offering a 'pooja' to the family deity is very important before any other specific 'pooja' is offered.
