The 1999 WMC in Cleveland, OH as observed by this SabMaggot

1.  Early Friday morning... enroute to Cleveland...

A few Chicago area SabMaggots (Dan Even, Ron Rosensweet and Greg Terpin... your author) left around 0530 CST.  We caught little traffic (as expected) and took our leisurely time heading out towards lovely Cleveland.  Per Curtis Hintze's request... we opted to stop off in Fort Wayne, IN and pick up a new toy/project for him.  Fortunately one of the Chicago 'maggots was manly enough <grin> to help the seller relocate the engine from his truck to Ron Rosensweet's cage.

2.  Friday afternoon pics...

We arrived into the Cleveland area around 1500 local time, promptly checked into the nearby Ramada and stowed most of our gear.  We got to Ryder's palace around 1530.  Dan Jones (from GA) was the first to arrive riding one of the many Sabres to show up.  V65 Sabre owners... pay close attention to this.  Upon Dan's arrival... most/all of his functions on his instrument cluster were non-functional.  After a careful diagnosis by a skilled crew of V65 SabMag technicians... it was determined that Dan's V65 suffered from the cracked fuse block syndrome.  Maybe David can post another copy of his experience in dealing with the V65 fuse block.

3.  Friday evening pics...

SabMaggots showed up sporadically the rest of the evening.  Janine and David had laid out quite a spread to feed (and drink) a lot of hungry 'maggots (photo credit to Jessica).  Now that we were allowed to gorge ourselves... everyone seemed a bit more content (left to right... Bob, Frank, J.. and Uncle Milt) except for Bob Peloquin 'cause he's still trying to figure how to use his new digital camera <grin>.  At left we see Jessica and Dan Jones in the background.  In this next photo we see Jessica (again), James, Lee and David.  After dinner... some people like to have a smoke... but not Bob and Milt as they'd rather be reading moto publications.  On the other hand, Janine and Jamie would rather engage in girl-talk.  The MEN meanwhile... would rather hang-out (fortunately not literally) in the garage and drink beer.  Here is IBM (Mike Stewart) wondering what the hell I'm doing with my camera.  Phil Ross, one of list administrators, later enjoys a meal all to himself.

Later... one of several moto tapes were played.  As it can clearly be observed... all were quite attentive.  During an intermission, Katherine Stewart and Jessica Ryder looks over one of the many Ryder Family SabMag Photo albums.  It looks like Jessica like the Hansons.

4.  Saturday pics...

Saturday's festivities started just at 0900.  Not that anyone hasn't seen a frosted bike (Kevin Kirkendall's fine ride) before, but all the bikes left out overnight needed to thaw out for a bit.  David Ryder wasted no time in clearing out some of inventory from the garage in order to make room for the WMC_99 to officially begin.  Here is David backing out  Chainsaw... his poor neglected bike since his acquisition of the ST1100.  Once the bike(s) were cleared from the garage, the entrance was covered to provide us with some protection from the elements and keep the odor of flatulence inside.  David, Dan, Ron and IBM try to restart the life juices for Chainsaw so that IBM can later mount him.  Russell Stephan's parked baby Sabre (one that will soon be neglected since word has it that he settled that deal for the '97 ST1100 in Milwaukee) behind David's house.  Pictured here is Kevin Kirkendall's V65 Sabre (left) and Phil Ross' V65 Sabre.  Kevin and Phil were comparing notes as to how to help Kevin properly  retrofit the CBX fairing that he recently acquired.  Also pictured is Gadget Dan Pierce (left), Kevin K., Bob or Rob (someone David invited who rides a loaded Royal Star), and Frank from NC.  Here is Uncle Milt and Kevin K. checking out the (ahem) Sabres.  Pictured left-to-right is Russell (soon to be writing trip reports from his ST1100), Kevin K., Phil and Frank.

Here is Janine's baby Sabre that is readied for its suspension rework.  The replacement springs went in very quickly for the front forks.  We had a mini fork oil thread in the garage.  Thankfully it was agreed to use 10W fork oil with the new Progressive Springs.  ENOUGH SAID!

Later... David prepares to remove the mufflers on Recidivist (how'd this bike get this name again???).  This needed to be done in order to provide room to remove the mono shock.  He soon realized they were NOT going to be coming off that easily.  Now here is Bob Peloquin thinking he can get his side off.  Yeah, right!  So... when in doubt... break out the BFH!  Perseverance finally (and the BFH) pays off as the mufflers are now off.  Here we see Ron Rosensweet applying his moto skills in providing some light for Bob and David.

Now... keep in mind while we're working (I'm just snapping pics and keeping my hands clean)... we have our other 'maggots preparing to leave for general riding (a requirement) and a visit to the moto show.  Here is IBM again wearing his new stitch atop Chainsaw.

Since the mufflers were such a job for the 'maggots doing the dirty work... it was decided that lunch was in order.  Just before we broke for lunch we heard the distintive sound of another V4 approaching.  Sure 'nuff... another Sabre rider, Kathy Becker, showed up from Michigan.  Note that her fine ride lacks a necessary fairing/windshield for this cold weather riding.  She wore many layers and had thermal packs strategically placed on her body since she rode with NO 'LECTRICS!  Consult her for more info on this.  Here is Kathy (now thawed) standing next to her V65 Sabre.  Inside (out of the very cool temps)... we see Uncle Milt and Bob enjoying another spread laid out by Janine.  In the background you see Kathy, Lee and David.  Here's a close-up of Lee, David and Kathy.  And here we see Ron Rosensweet, Bob (bright spot) Peloquin and Uncle Milt engaging in more social intercourse.  Sitting quietly inside are Dan Even really enjoying a drink and Dan Jones checking out some good bathroom reading material.  It should be noted that nearly 20% of the attendees were named Dan... Gadget Dan, Dan Even, Dan Jones and Dan from Buffalo.  Did I miss anyone???

After lunch... we returned to the garage to finish removing the rear mono shockBob and David did a heck of a job.  This is a good reason why it's not a bad idea to refill the rear mono shock on the Sabres as we can observe some disgusting spooge being drained from the shock.  Bob and David devised an ingenious way to refill the shock very quickly.  Keep an eye for details in one of their posts.  Later Dave Morrow (David's boss... be nice now) shows up and Kathy Becker hams it up for the camera.

5.  General BS...

It should be noted that every rider who showed up rode a Sabre.  Yeah... there was talk about that bike being superior, etc... but I believe it just has to do with the insanity of the rider.  BFG.  I (your author) think it's great that we had such a large turnout of folks on bikes.  I'm sure it was just coincidence that all the Magna riders either stayed home or caged it (like us Chicago 'maggots).

We didn't have a sign-in sheet or anything like that... but my count shows that we had a total of 25 folks visit David and Janine over the weekend.  More may have showed up on Sunday... but we (the Chicago 'maggots) left Saturday evening just before dinner and got home just before midnight CST.

My attendance list shows to include:

David Ryder and Janine (our esteemed host and hostess)
Dan Even, Ron Rosensweet and Greg Terpin (me) from the Chicago area
Mike (IBM) and Katherine Stewart (plus Bear and Furball???) from NC
Frank and Ron Butterfield from NC
Kathy Becker and Gadget Dan Pierce from MI
James and Jamie from AZ
Uncle Milt from CA
Bob Peloquin from MA
Lee Gerhke, Russell Stephan and Mark Skroki were local attendees
Dave Morrow and Micky (sp?) were also local attendees
Phil Ross, OH
Kevin Kirkendall from OH
Eric Grabek and Dan from Buffalo, NY
Dan Jones from GA

If I've misspelled or misrepresented your name in any way... please let me know and I'll make the necessary correction(s).  I had a great time and am looking forward to the next gathering of us biker scum. :-)

Regards,

Greg
