Envelope/Buste Series

Oil pastel, graphite

...for a two year period, during my residence in Bologna, 
Italy, beginning in June 1998, I saved envelopes from
the correspondence I received on a day to day basis...
I thought it might be a way of keeping a sort of diary
of my contacts and communications...on each envelope 
I either drew in pencil and then retraced and coloured
with oil pastels, or would transfer images from books 
and magazine with a solvent, which I then would also 
colour with oil pastels, enamels or acrylic paints...
some of the results are figurative others are less so...
it all reflects a day to day relationship to my new home
for two years, to those who corresponded with me at a 
perrsonal or official level, and an emotional/visual
diary of the period...these are a few examples of the work...
