I, and Jim Starkey, my brother-in-law of 31 years, were at the 8th RRU, 3/65 to 4/66. I then went to Herzo Base, 6/66 to 5/68, and Jim was at VHFS. In reviewing your guest books, I have found two people I want to contact that I served with. Jim and I used "people search" Christmas day, located and telephoned two from the 8th we had not spoken with in 30 years. What a great feeling! Jim does not own a PC, any messages for him can come to my e-mail. We want to hear from anyone from the 8th, Herzo, or VHFS that will contact us. Final note, my mom told my sister to not feed Jim when I brought him home from with me from Devens, mom was right, he stayed. Waiting for a sked time. AR

1st of all-hats off and a hearty left-handed salute (best kind) to Vern for the huge undertaking he has so successfully masterminded!!!
I was in ASA 1966-1970. Went to DLI (Mandarin) then 98C school at Devens (I really thought traffic analysis was something MPs did at an intersection until I got there). Spent 9/67-9/68 in PhuBai with most of my friends from language school.Spent about 30 seconds under my bunk with all 4 of my roommates after a rocket hit next to the tennis court about 30 yds from our end room of E-row on the 1st night of Tet. (I just received several old photos of Tet from Chris Lane-be glad to send them over the net to anyone interested). Finished out at Helemano,HI. This Summer I met John Seidel & Chris Lane on 4th Of July in Strathmere,NJ- GREAT TIME. Also met Ron Pietrowski, who I'd been trying to find for only 30 years or so (turns out his Dad lives 3 blocks from me-when I told my barber he said"yeah, he was the guy ahead of you in the chair who just walked out" (still haven't met him). Have also made verbal or email contact w/: Chris Dlugokenski,Jim Grodecki, Tom Howard, Eli Renn, Gary Roseme. I am working on setting up a reunion in '98 and I am tryin to find ANY info on whereabouts of Gilbert Merrill (from Brown Univ.), Jerry Williams (Texas), John Stromberg (Mora,MN),Crazzzy John E. Smith (VN linguist,Florida-as opposed to the other 1 or 2 other John Smiths around),Ray Rawlett,Michael R Yates, Tom Lund("Lurch",Vancouver,WA),Dave Coolidge,Otto B. Neely III, Jim Seybold (NH),BIG Mitchell (Everglades,FL somewhere),George Dawson(my red headed roommate in Phubai-not even sure of last name now),Mike Henderson,Rich Thomas, Bob Woodruff,John Wilborn (was LT @ Camp Evans), Mike(?) Hansen, Wes Chong (Company Clerk in Phu Bai, from Hawaii), Don Meeks, Clay Spiegel, Jerry Nadig (on Harvard Tennis Team), Joe Germanaro. Would appreciate any help- sometimes the smallest bit helps a ton (of course we ASAers know all about that.

This is a great page. I am looking for anyone that served with me during the following dates and times I entered the army in Nov 1949 and took basic at the 65th field arty Bn Ft Knox Ky. I transfered to Ft. Monmouth Sig School in 1950 and went to Teletype Repair School From there After the Korean Police Action broke out I entered ASA and went ot Carlisle Barracks About July 1950 to go to Crypto Repair School From there I was sent to Arlington Hall Sta. where I worked for a short time in Gas 51 referbishing Crypto machines. after a few months I was sent to Camp Pickett Va. The 501st Comm Recon. Gp. I was in the Hq Group only a short time and was transfered to the 329th Comm Recon Co. This was in early 1951. shortly after I was transfered the 501st Hq Gp was sent to Korea. In oct 1951 the 329th Comm. Recon also transfered to Korea. After arriving in Korea I found that I did not have training on the on line equipment that the 329th had installed at their base and was transfered back to ASAPAC Oji Japan and worked the com center there. I reuped while there and was sent to the school I originally went there to go to. Then I was returned to Korea and the Hq Co. 501st Gp. and the GK team that was in mid 1952. on Oct 1953 after the POLICE ACTION was over I was transfered to Vint Hill Farms Sta. Where I worked a a trick chief in the operations bunker. In early 1954 I transfer to Arlington hall and worked in Gas 53. I transfered to Hq USASAE Frankfurt Ger. in late 1954. There I worked in the Com Center in the basement of the IG Farbin Bldg. I did several TDY tours to Schirn Bad, Ibling and also Italy Avanio Air Base. Leghorn, Naples, Athens Greece, Asmira,
and Egypt.. I transfered back to the States and was assigned to NSA where I left the Army and went to work for NSA as a civilian in July 1963. I then retired from NSA on Oct 8 1987 with 38 years service with the agency and pred. agencies. If you worked with me I would like to hear from you. Apr '65 - Nov '68 - HHC, 303d ASA Battalion (Corps). Originally at Ft Wolters, Texas. Deployed to RVN Apr '66.
Through trained as a 98B20, I spent most of my time working in the S-1 Section of Battalion HQ. Worked for good people (COL John J. Masters, LTC Clarence V. Would like to hear from anyone who was with the original HHC, 303d Bn when deployed to RVN or any of the replacements who came in as we were scattered through the out units.

I returned to RVN as a civilian employee of the U. S. State Department in February, 1969. Spent the next three years in Ba-Ria (Xa Phuoc-Le, Tinh Phuoc-Tuy). Had a one month layover in Hawaii for a language refresher course.

Mother of Pearl! Chicken Pluckers of the World Unite. I don’t even know how I got to this page, but long unused synapse are sputtering. I had the deferment for school, but something happened Spring ’68 (long story, ask me later). Air Force and Navy were full and ASA looked like the only choice (not a good start). May, 28, 1968: Basic at Leonard Wood, MO (Echo Five Two). Sept, 1968: DLIWC for Spanish at Monterey, CA. May, 1969: Ft. Clayton, Canal Zone, Panama (Hard On, Trick Three!). It started getting strange, then, of course. I was 98G. Chiva Chiva had me about 3 days a week and El Jardin Balboa had me the rest of the time. Any other SOUTHCOM spooks out there? The kidnapping charge kept me from getting an extension, but they threw me in the briar patch, Oct 70: Homestead AFB, FL. Got out early Dec, 1971. Never thought I’d say it at the time, but ASA was real good for me. I got most of the wild oats out of the system, and what’s left hasn’t killed me yet. Still miss that old gang of mine. First of all,let me say that it's a pleasure to find this site. Because of
family illness, I had to leave the ASA
In 1968 (compassionate reassignment to
Ft. Benning to be close to home because of mother's illness). During the time that I was in, however, I met many good
people whom I'll never forget. So far,
while reading the guestbooks, the only name I recognized was Col. John J. McFadden. We were having a parade at Davis Station (don't remember the occasion) when Col. McFadden saw me with
my camera up. In his typical fasion, he
started dancing a jig. I still have that
picture somewhere in the attic. Thanks
Vern. I, like others in your guest books, will remember the time in the ASA
as the best part of my young life.
As a former 05H ditty bopper, let me say......ASA ALL THE WAY!!!

Enlisted in 1955 had to take basic at Ft Jackson then went to Ft Devens and was Co clerk for a while with Capt Whelan FSgt Assman then went to Hq Co. In 58 went to Photo School at Monmouth and on to Kagnew Station to run the photo lab. Spent most time hunting or fishing. Came back to AHS in 60 and ran photo lab. Went back to Kagnew in 61 till 64. Hunting was closed for most part compared to earlier duty. But went to Sudan and Kenya hunting along with all over Eritrea. Was treasurer of Rod & Gun club, got court-martialed twice for "poaching" but ended up beating them. Had hunted with lots of officers illegally and others NCO's and of course had photos but didn't have to show them around. They wanted to make an example. Came back to AHS in 64 and quit after 10 years in ASA. Would like to find a few guys, Darden, Duckett, Findley, Joe Jackson, Burt Sachs, and any other friends. Best to All ASA'ers

It is an honor to sign in along with so many who are striving to keep the ASA alive in the collective memory of what it was like to be there. I enlisted in '66 after receiving a draft notice. I had departed college when it became too much of a drag, so the Viet Nam build-up snagged me. Ended up in ASA in basic, and went to Fort Monmouth for 32G. It was a snap, as I had already been through 4 years of Electronics Technology.

Went to Korea and the 508 Hq Commcenter from July '66 to Aug. '67. The to Aschaffenburg for a year and Augsburg for two. To Fort Hood where they tried to send me back to Korea. Swapped out of that one with a guy whose name I am ashamed to admit I don't remember. That was in '71 I think. Was pout on orders for Nam with a trip back to Monmouth for Fixed Ciphony repair school.

By that time, the Army had also become a drag. There was a tune popular at that time that had the line, "He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine," that became my anthem.

I applied for acompassionate eassignment, and received a run-around for six months. I appealed to Senator Sam Ervin, Watergate inquiry fame, who made a couple of phone calls, which resulted in a dependency discharge a year and a half early. All of my service at that time had been overseas and I was tired of the games and BS.

Now live with my bride of 32 years, we were married 27 days before I arrived in Korea, in Fort Lauderdale. I design and manufacture ozone systems for use aboard large luxury yachts the world over.

Our son Kevin was born in Augsburg at the Flak Hospital. He and I are going back for the Augsburg farewell reunion in June. He wants to see his Fatherland and do some high-speed touring on the Autobahns. He will be 30 in August.

It is great fun reading the guestbooks. Keep it all alive.

To John Millard - You are looking for Horning and Andresen. I remember them coming to Hakata while I was there. I think that Bruce was from Wisconsin. Maybe that will help you.

Forgot to mention - MOS - 05G4HH6
The H6 meant I was TEMPEST RED/BLACK
qualified. I was one of only about 4-5
05G's in the world with this designation. The first Basic Crytplogic Supervisor's course included Tempest Red/Black training but then they decided to drop it in the courses that followed.
Decided that training was better suited for the officers that would be doing Crypto facility inspections - even though I did the courtesy inspections on a regular basis. Military planning as usual!!

Great page and you sure can find a lot of lost friends. Seems like a long time ago and we still have ASA meetings in Ayer, Ma every other Wed., 11:30 for lunch and BS. Great times by all whether they are ASA or Inscomers but most of the time the Inscom people think we are lying when we tell them about burning out the SGM in Sinop for f-----g with the troops. What Fire.

I served from 73-77 at NSA and 7th RRFS in Udorn. I am currently putting a book together to give to my father on his 69th birthday which is a composition of stories from people who knew him in his 24 years in ASA. His name is CW4 Robert K. Grayson and served from 1947 to 1971. He was in Det V Gp 10 for a majority of his career (embassy duty). He was at Ft. Devens, Okinawa, Helsinki, Athens, Augsburg, Quito, Arlington Hall, Vint Hill Station, Saigon, and others. I am looking for people who knew him to contribute stories about him. If you knew my father (or can supply names of people who might have known him), please let me know. The name of the book will be "What About Bob?" Photographs with my father in them are also welcome ... either attach them to an email or mail them and I will scan and return them to you. My mailing address is 1101 Pine Grove Drive, Alpharetta, GA, 30004. Vigilant Always.
