Goutetsu's knowledge of Shotokan karate included that of a 'killing intent' that allowed the user of such karate to slay people using special attacks. Goutetsu decided that such a murderous use of Shotokan karate should be forgotten, and so when he explained this to Gouken, his disciple kept this in mind and never once mentioned the 'killing intent' to his students, Ryu, Ken, and Dan, many years later. Wanting only power though, Gouki re-discovered the 'killing intent' against his master's wishes and used the most powerful technique, 'Shun-goku-satsu', to destroy Goutetsu. Even though Goutetsu knew all the killing techniques himself, he refused to use them, even when Gouki confronted him.
