At the title screen, press U+L (an upper left diagonal on your D-pad), and hold down A,C. Press start while holding. Then start the game as normal.
Then, when you're playing the game, pause it and press one of the following buttons for a cheat:
A Skips an act
B Skips a stage
C Skis to final boss
X Gives you one life
Y Gives you one medal
Z Gives you one Chaos Emerald
