Introduction:  

The "Level 2- Sailing" qualification is available to all sections, (except Joeys). Generally, older Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders will have the physical and mental capabilities to gain this qualification.  
The successful completion of this course will enable Scouts to gain a "Level 2- Sailing" qualification as well as substantially completing the requirements for the Explorer Level, Water Activities Target Badge.  
Successful completion of this course leads to the award of the Australian Yachting Federation Introductory Certificate in Sailing.  
Trainees must have completed the two-day Level 1 course before continuing with the six-day Level 2 course, (a total of eight days).  
The maximum ratio is one instructor / assistant instructor per three trainees for on water tuition.  
  
Requirements:  

These requirements are all met by participating in the Level 2 Sailing Course.  
     * Have achieved Level 1 in sailing. 
     * Be able to estimate the time it 
       would take to cover a given 
       distance on water. 
     * Have an understanding of tides
       and currents in coastal areas 
       and/or  water behaviour in rivers 
       and streams. 
     * In a sailing boat, demonstrate  
       getting in and out in deep water, 
       throwing a line with accuracy over  
       10 metres, simple maintenance and 
       repairs. 
     * Demonstrate Scout procedures for 
       activities. 
     * Gain a minimum of eight hours as a  
       skipper in a sailing boat with a 
       holder of Level 3 or higher in direct 
       supervision. 
     * Demonstrate the following skills
       with a sailing boat: getting in and 
       out, off  a beach and at a landing, 
       load and trim, launching into and 
       removal from water. 
     * Know the symptoms and treatment 
       of  hypothermia and hyperthermia. 
     * Explain three effects of weather on  
       a sailing boat. 
     * Know the weather forecast for the  
       day of sailing. 
     * Understand wind and wave patterns 
       and strengths - Beaufort Scale, to  
      decide whether you should go sailing 
      or not. 
     * Understand the 12th rule of tide. 
     * Know the parts of a sail, a minimum 
       of 20 parts of a boat and to be able  
       to rig a sailing boat. 
     * Understand the theory of sail and  
       how and when to reef down (if  
       applicable). 
     * With another person, capsize and  
       recover a small sailing boat. 
     * Demonstrate knowledge of buoys  
       and beacons or navigation signs  
       used in our area, and lights on other 
       sailing  
       vessels. 
     * Describe the advantages and 
       disadvantages of lee and weather  
       shores. 
     * Demonstrate the correct method of  
       towing and being towed. 
     * Be able to recognise five common  
       distress signals, one each at least  
       of sight, sound and light.
