Nature Club History

 

Exploring a path with a heart, in the cause of environment, landmarks on the way.

 

 Activities over the years:

1979 -

Small beginning, 15 members with Prof. Vakharia.

1981 -

Operating from Botany Department First exhibition using WWF - Material, first camp at Loni.

1982 -

Shifted to the present Nature Club room on the ground floor.

Exhibition on Wonders of nature - covered by Doordarshan. Visitors included eminent Physicist Dr. Taylor, Ex. P.M. - Morariji Desai

1983 -

Tree planting at Karnala - 350 saplings.

1984 -

Tree planting at Mahim Nature Park - 200 saplings.

1985 -

Tree planting at Nhava Sheva - 250 saplings.

1987 -

Tree planting for Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation at Talaseri Boisar and Nallasopara - 2000 saplings.

1988 -

First Nature orientation camp in a major Sanctuary. Exhibition on the Marine World about 3000 visitors. Tree planting at Ambauli - 750 saplings.

1989 -

Exhibition on forests and people, 5000 visitors. Tree planting at Ambauli - 750 saplings. Wilson College won two of the three prizes in inter college exhibition competition. Camp at Radhanagri Wildlife Sanctuary and Malvan Marine Sanctuary.

1990 -

Tree planting at Priyadarshni Park. Exhibition on environmental problems, 6000 visitors. Nature Club Members put up a dance ballet on an environmental theme for over 1000 WWF members at Sophia Bhabha auditorium.Camp at Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary - climb up Kalsubai (Maharashtra's highest peak).

1991 -

Tree planting drive over 4000 saplings for various corporate groups at Roha, 120 kms from Mumbai. Exhibition on Conservation Development interface. Camp at Lonavala, Rehekuri.

1992 -

Exhibition on Conservation action - 7000 visitors. Tree planting at Yusuf Meherally Centre, 650 saplings. Camp at Dandeli wildlife Sanctuary - Snake shows as a feature of activities begins.

1993 -

Exhibition on Biodiversity - a walk through vasious eco-systems, 7000 visitors. Tree planting at Vikhroli 450 saplings. Nature club organised camps and a teacher training workshop for WWF - India. Camp at Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary.

1994 -

Exhibition on Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks in India, 8000 visitors. Focus on tribal art. Warli artisan created works, of art during the exhibition.

Highlight - Rope bridge across the stage. Tree planting at Vikhroli, Yusuf Meherally Centre, 750 saplings. Camp at Tadoba National Park.

1995 -

Exhibition on "Wonders in the Living Domain", 7000 visitors. Tree planting at Vikhroli, 750 saplings. Camp at Gir National Park and Marine National Park at Pirotan.

1996 -

Exhibition on Evolution from BigBang, 10,000 visitors. Tree planting at Vikhroli, 750 saplings; tree planting at Yusuf Meherally Centre, 650 saplings and tree planting at Badlapur, 125 saplings. Annual camp at Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary at Annamalai - Tamilnadu.

1997 -

Exhibition on the Marine World with emphasis on coral reefs to commemorate international year of the coral reef. Over a thousand saplings planted at Yusuf Meherally Centre and Mangrove complex at Vikhroli. Annual camp to Fo Bangla wildlife sanctuary and wilderness areas in Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong. December camp at Kanha National Park.
