Eggscitment!

Every year in Mrs. Helfrich's class, the children enjoy hatching duck, chicken, and even quail eggs. In the spring of 1999, the class hatched ducklings and chicks. Here is their story as told by the students...

Eggs Inside Incubator
Hatching Our Eggs
By Division 5 – Grade 2/3

We put our eggs into the incubator. There were duck and chick eggs.  The incubator was kept at 102’F.  Everyday we took turns turning the eggs.  They needed to be turned four times a day to help them develop evenly.

After 21 days our chicks hatched at one of the students’ house.  We had four babies.  The class was very excited.  We felt bad about the ones that didn’t hatch.

After two weeks, another student in our class took the chicks to her farm.  Soon they got bigger and were trying to fly.

After 28 days we had 3 ducks hatch.  But one passed away.  The two remaining ducks hatched at girl’s house who had taken them home for the weekend. We missed all of the hatching!  The girl put them into a small pool. Egor, one of the ducks, liked to peck at your hands, but it didn’t hurt.

At school many children came to see our ducks and chickens.  One of the chicks, Zac, was a rooster.  He was more jumpy than the others.

We have learned about the life cycle of eggs and had a lot of fun.
