WoolMan's Firefly Homepage

This page is devoted to the Pontiac Firefly (and its relatives) because I like these cars. My first car was a 1987 Chevy Sprint with an automatic transaxle and a 3 cylinders 1.0l engine. Since then, I bought another one, a 1989 Pontiac Firefly with a manual transaxle and a 3 cylinders 1.0l TBI engine. The weirdest Firefly I ever saw was a 1988 Sprint with a custom 1.9l engine and a manual transaxle. I drove it for a ride, but it's performances were not as good as they should have been. I would like in the future to get my hands on a Firefly Turbo.

Firefly General Info

These cars are technicaly refered to as "M Body" vehicules by GM. All these vehicules are built by Suzuki Motor Corp. (Swift/Forsa) and imported by GM (Firefly/Sprint/Metro).

The platform was introduced in 1985. Major changes were performed on 1989 models and 1995 models. In 1989, Suzuki changed the name Forsa for Swift.

The available engines include:

The 3 cylinder intercooled turbo engine was abandoned in 1992. The 4 cylinder 1.3 SOHC engine has the same power but less torque.

The most interesting models are the Swift GTi and the Firefly / Sprint Turbo 89-91.

The combination of the standard 3 cylinders engine with an automatic transaxle is for grandmothers only.

Firefly Mechanic

The Firefly is a great car for do-it yourselfers because its mechanic is very simple (especially the fuel injection models). Also, there so much room under the hood that you can do most repairs with the engine still in the car. Also, all the parts surrounding the engines are easy to access and very few of them requires to get under the car. However, if the car is equipped with air conditioning, things may get a little bit more cluttered.

Great books for doing repairs and having full specs. & schematics:
