Watervliet, Michigan is located one mile north of Exit 41 of I-94 interstate highway, that connects Detroit, Michigan with Chicago, Illinois. This city of 1,800 persons, is 100 miles EAST of Chicago, Illinois---190 miles WEST of Detroit, Michigan--- 60 miles NORTH of South Bend, Indiana---and 90 miles SOUTH of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Located in the northeast corner of Berrien County, this prospering small city has a strong committment to it's past, while it enjoys the present and takes time to plan for the future.

The city has two Renaissance Zones designated by the legislature of the state of Michigan that entice development in the city, by offerring tax abatements for all local and state taxes over a twelve year period, beginning January 1, 2000. The city is also actively pursuing development of city property near the interstate highway, the high school and the hospital. The city commission, is developing a strategic plan for the construction and repair of city sidewalks, is developing a plan for the revision of its seventy-five year old charter is planning to develop its two Renaissance Zone areas, and is working to lower its expense/revenue ratio.

The community that is now known as the city of Watervliet, was founded in 1833. The Sumner-Wheeler Saw Mill was founded on a site that later became the site of the Watervliet Paper Company and is now a Renaissance Zone, soon to be developed for a different usage. Isaac Moffatt became one of the areas first merchants in 1836, when he opened a general store.

The name ultimately chosen for this city comes from a Dutch term meaning "flowing waters". Watervliet certainly does have an abundance of flowing waters. It is in this city that the trout-rich Mill Creek flows into the Paw Paw River. The Paw Paw River eventually empties into the St Joseph River, just east of Lake Michigan.

RECREATION is an important part of the lives of the citizens of Watervliet, as well as to its many visitors. Paw Paw Lake is a favorite spot for boaters, swimmers and fisherman. Lake Michigan is a short 10 mile drive away, offering a multitude of water enjoyment activities. If golf is your game, then the Paw Paw Lake Golf Course is the place for you. In the colder months there is cross country skiing at Brookside Park located just south of the city limits. Hays Park along the shores of the Paw Paw River is an excellent spot for picnics or parties and is the site for youth soccer, baseball and softball games. Flaherty Park, named after longtime mayor and civil servant, Robert E. Flaherty, is also an excellent place for fishing, picnics, parties or just relaxing along the banks of Mill Creek.
