Marshfield
Burying Ground
Town of North Collins,
Erie County, New York
[7 December 1998]

Below is the list of plot purchasers from the "Marshfield Burying Ground" in
North Collins. This cemetery is located at the intersection of Sisson
Highway (Route 75) and Marshfield Road. This intersection once formed the
hamlet of Marshfield which had its own post office. It is now part of the
Town of North Collins.

We don't know, at this time, how many graves were in each plot, but standard
for the time would have been six. There is no known list of actual burials.
It has not been possible for us to do an actual documentation of gravestones
this past summer for an assortment of reasons, but the cemetery was
vandalized several years ago and never repaired. Many of the stones were
almost unreadable when I visited the site probably 15 years ago. We (North
Collins Historical Society) will try to visit the site next spring/summer to
see if anything is still legible. We have been told the stone of Ebenezer
Spooner is still quite legible and contains the name and company of his
Civil War service regiment.

Plots listed as "--" do not list a purchaser. There is also no indication on
the record of any year. The cemetery is laid out in rows of 14 plots with
each row's numbers beginning at the bottom (indicated as the western line)
of the chart of names. Row Number 1 is at the right (south) of the list.

The cemetery has been virtually abandoned for many, many years. The Girls
Scouts used to have a camp right next door and did clean it out about 20
years ago. There is one man who has a relative buried there who says he
mows it (with a tractor) twice a year but it otherwise receives no
attention. Some of the town residents do not even know this cemetery exists
as it is set back from the road a bit and overgrown with trees.
A pasture path leads to it winding up the hill to the trees and the pasture.
