TANNER
John , died Nov. 25, 1872, aged 48 yrs 3 mos 25 das.
(I find a John Tanner who is listed as having been a veteran in the 12th NY Cavalry (Civil War).
Could there be some error in your data?
Although there was a John Tanner in the 12th NY Cavalry, he died of disease in 1864. HIS full entry from the AGO report is:
TANNER, JOHN. - Age, 30 years. Enlisted, January 19, 1863, at Buffalo; mustered in as corporal, Co. F, January 19, 1863,
to serve three years; transferred to Co. E, May 20, 1863, reduced, same date; died of disease, October 5, 1864, in hospital at New Berne, N.C.
Clearly these two are not the same person.
My first thought is that someone has made the very common error of confusing the 12th CAVALRY with the 12th INFANTRY.
I would be grateful for any light you can shed on this question.
Kenneth Wooster
http://snycorva.cortland.edu/~woosterk/12cav.html )

(It is all still a mystery to me. I lean toward the opinion that the funeral director, Floyd J. Balthasar, who compiled the list in 1940
was more likely to have made an error in the unit affiliation of the John Tanner who is buried in Goodelberg Cemetery than was the
Adjutant-General's Office Report in the death of the John Tanner of the 12th Cavalry in a military hospital in New Berne in 1864.
The birthdate of one and the age at the time of enlistment of the other also signals to me that they were almost certainly two different people.
And so either the AGO report omitted the John Tanner buried in Erie County or his unit affiliation was incorrectly recorded by Balthasar.
Since I don't have a personal genealogical interest in either John Tanner but am interested mainly in keeping my web page for the
12th NY Cavalry as complete and accurate as possible, my intended route is to be upfront about it and list this Goodelberg Cemetery
John Tanner in my list of those that the AGO may possibly have overlooked, giving details of his birth, death, burial place, etc.
I want neither to overlook him if he deserves to be there nor to append his name to an official list if he does not.
Thanks for the help.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Wooster woosterk@snycorva.cortland.edu)

Since many of the tombstones were very difficult to read
( and we read many of them with our fingers} and because Wales had not begun to be settled
until (1806) and because most of the dates in the cemetery seem to be started in the 1840's,
I tend to agree with the East Aurora Historical Society readings of the dates.
Sincerely yours,
