Du gamla, du fria, du fjäll-höga nord ("O glorious mountain

Sweden, a constitutional
monarchy of northern Europe, occupying the eastern and larger portion of
the Scandinavian Peninsula. (see Map
1). Sweden extends for almost 1,000 miles (1,500 km) from north to
south, and about one seventh of its area lies above the Arctic Circle.
Sweden shares a land boundary with Norway in the west and Finland in the
northeast. Elsewhere it is surrounded by water: the Gulf of Bothnia, the
Baltic Sea, and the Kattegat.
Although Sweden has been involved
in no wars since the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, its armies once conquered
an empire that included Finland, much of Norway, and parts of Russia and
Germany. Until the 20th century Sweden was a relatively poor country, from
which thousands of people emigrated every year. Today it is one of the
most highly industrialized nations of the world. Its government provides
an extensive system of social welfare services, and its people enjoy perhaps
the highest standard of living in the world.
