Wright-Patterson AFB
Rod & Gun Club
I would like to thank you for expressing an interest in the WPAFB Rod & Gun Club. This activity is a membership club under the Services organization. Membership is open to all base employees; active duty and retired, including military and civilian employees, and their dependents. In addition, the club extends membership to base contractors as well as the members of the ATA and NSSA and shooters in the DIAA program. The club is involved with many different activities and I am sure some will interest you.
Normal hours of operation are:
Saturday: 1200-1700 (sales only) unless a day of a registered shoot.
On Saturday's with registered shoots the opening hours will depend on the shoot program and ranges will be open.
Sunday: 1100-1800
Wednesday: 1100-2000
The Pro Shop processes special orders on Monday and Tuesday. The skeet and trap ranges are closed on those days. We do not have established hours on those days, so please call before coming to the club. We are certainly willing to serve you if we are at the club.
The club has one automatic trap ranges and six manual trap fields. There are six active skeet ranges. Normally, there is one practice trap and three skeet ranges open, unless there is a registered shoot in progress. On days of registered shoots, there is normally one trap and one practice skeet field open. They share the common facilities of the pro shop and meeting building.
In addition to the skeet and trap shooting facilities, the Rod & Gun Club helps manage numerous base functions, including the stocking of the base lakes with 9,500 pounds of trout and 7,500 ponds of catfish, monitoring the fishing program, running the base hunting program, including the release of over 1700 pheasants. The base hunting and fishing programs are independent from club membership and requires separate licensing. These programs are open only to base employees. All others are guests and must be accompanied by licensed sponsors.
The Rod & Gun Club hosts a summer trap shooting program. This program is open to all base employees (military and civilian), their dependents, and club members. This is a very informal league with a little "competition among ourselves" flavor thrown in. The program consists of 25 sixteen yard and 25 handicap yardage targets (total of 50) shot on the first and third Wednesday of each month from May to September. Makeups are completed on the last Wednesday of each month. A total of 500 targets is shot duringthe program. At the conclusion of the program trophies are awarded to each yardage category at the awards dinner.
The base also enters a team in the Dayton Industrial Athletic Association (DIAA) trap league, which starts in September of each year. We can provide you with additional information, if you desire. The club also has a full schedule of registered ATA trap shoots in which you may wish to participate.
There are registered NSSA skeet shoots are held throughout the year. The club hosts several very large shoots. We are home of the Buckeye Challenge in June and one of two sites for the Ohio State Skeet shooting Championships.
The club is heavy into shooter education. We frequently conduct courses in trap and skeet shooting fundamentals. The club is one of the area locations which conducts Hunter Education for the State of Ohio. This course meets the state requirements for first time hunters.
Club programs are open to all members and their dependents. This includes military and civilian, active and retired. As a membership club, the facilities are for use by the members. Annual dues are $30.00 a year (from the time you join). Club facilities are open for practice shooting on Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturdays (of registered shoots).
Membership entitles you to purchase a full line of sporting goods (including firearms). All items are priced at eleven per cent above cost. That makes most items quite competitive.
Club membership is a family affair - only one is required for all dependents (living within the same household). If you would like any additional information about the club or any of it's programs, please give us a call at 257-3935 or stop by the club.
For information on upcoming events or special announcements call 257-4368 (after duty hours) or visit us on the web at http://wp_gunclub.tripod.com. If you would like to send us a message, our e-mail address is RODGUN@WPAFB.AF.mil.
