OHIO SHACKELFORDS
In your May magazine we closed while discussing the Shackelfords of Ross, Morrow, and Fayette Counties, Ohio. We will continue that discussion now, but before we begin we wish to mention the life of the magazine again.
As stated in the May Magazine we will discontinue the publication of the magazine when we have completed Volume 12, which will be April 1957. And we are now making the following special offer: All twelve volumes bound in brown press board, for the total sum of $7.00, post paid to any point in the United States. No remittance will be necessary at this time, not until the books are ready for shipping. But if you want one we would be grateful for the order immediately.
Now back to the great State of Ohio.
The purpose in publishing these records is in response to a request, and by so doing endeavor to establish the ancestry of one John Shackelford, and Lewis Shackelford or Shackleford, whom we feel are probably brothers. John died in Ross County 1821, and while we do not have the date of the death of Lewis, we find that he was still living in 1850 in Fayette County, so he died after that date. And the age of Lewis Shackleford indicates that he was approximately the age to have been a brother of John.
Lewis was born 1785, and that was evidently about

the same date of the birth of John. Then note the 1850 census of Fayette County where we find one Richard Shackelford, age 89, was born in Maryland. Query: Was this Richard the father of Lewis and/or John? Being 89 in 1850 would place the date of his birth as 1761, which would make him old enough to be the father of Lewis, and probably John also.
We are not certain of the names of the children of John Shackleford who died in Ross County, Ohio, 1821, but from records given you in the May magazine we see that there were six of them, and we are certain that William, Henry, Lewis, and Stephen were four of them, and believe the other two to have been Elizabeth and Mary. And we are going to list the children of John and Nancy Shackleford in the following order:

But it will be noted that John W. Airey and Nancy Shackelford married in Ross County, March 6, 1821, and that they purchased the interest of William Shackleford, which was 1/6, in the land that was formerly owned by John Shackleford. Also that John W. Airey and Elizabeth Shackleford were guardians of Lewis and Stephen Shackleford. So there is apparently a connection between the heirs of John Shackleford and this Nancy Shackleford-Airey. Query: Was this Nancy the widow of John and later married John W. Airey? Or was she John's daughter?
We are not certain that William, son of John and Nancy Shackleford, married Mary House. But you will note that William's wife was Mary, and we find only this one William and Mary marriage. We know nothing of their descendants.
We understand that Mary who married John F. Airey, was a daughter of John and Nancy, by reason of correspondence we have had with Mr Marshall T. Shackleford, of Cisne, Illinois, as we shall tell you about later. But first we would like to mention the cor-

respondence we had with Mrs Nancy Ann Todd, then of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the youngest daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, in March of 1945, in which she wrote, and I quote - "I am the only member who can give you the information you want, as I am the only and youngest living child of twelve children of Lewis Shackelford. I will give the family records as I find it written in the family Bible.
father Lewis Shackelford was born September 5, 1817, in Ross County, Ohio. He had three brothers - Henry, Stephen, and William. Henry was a bachelor. The other two married and had children but this is all I know of them.
My mother - Elizabeth Ann Bryant was born March 17, 1821. She and my father were married [in] Chilicothe, Ohio, May 28, 1839. My father was a Baptist minister. They had ten children." end of quote.
Then she gave the names of the ten children, all of whom we shall give you later, and the name of Lewis Shackelford's second wife, by whom he had two more children.
In writing of her ancestors May 24, 1945, she wrote as follows, and we quote - "My father never told us anything about them. I learned the first territorial governor of Ohio was named Tiffin and a distant relative of ours, but did not know the connection. Since I wrote you it came to me that my father had a sister Elizabeth that married a man named "Miller", and they had two children - Phoebe and Wesley, and lived at Frankfort, Ohio, and that is all I know of them.
My father's mother married a second time to a man named Airey. I don't remember seeing her but one time when I was three years old." - end of quote.
So by the above we see that Nancy Shackelford, widow of John, married a second time, and to a man by the name of Airey. Evidently it was John W. Airey. But this does not exactly agree with records sent to us by Mr Marshall T. Shackleford, of Cisne, Ill.
We have been in communication with Mr Marshall T. Shackleford, of Cisne, Ill., since October 21, 1946. And to him goes the credit for several records of

his branch of the family. He is a son of Andrew Jackson, and a grandson of Stephen Tiffin Shackleford. And in his records we find that his grand father Stephen Tiffin Shackleford was a brother to Lewis Shackleford, that married Elizabeth Ann Bryant.
But herein lies the puzzle. This Mr Shackleford is in possession of a little book - account book, that dates back to 1821, and shows the names of several Shackelfords, including a James and Nancy, who were at one time in Seneca County, Ohio. This Nancy, who Mr Shackelford thought to be his great grandmother, was born 1785, and died in Wayne Co., Illinois, 1869.
But if this Nancy was the widow of John, and was still Nancy Shackleford in 1869, who was Nancy, the wife of John W. Airey? And where did Mrs Nancy Ann Todd get the idea that Nancy, widow of John, married a man named Airey?
Or was the Nancy Shackleford that died in Wayne County, Ill., 1869, the widow of James, he who was mentioned in the little account book?
But bear in mind that Henry Shackleford, born 1804, and Elizabeth Shackleford, born 1785, were living in the home of Lewis and Elizabeth Shackleford, in Fayette County, Ohio, 1850. Was this Elizabeth and Nancy one and the same person? Or was Elizabeth a sister to John Shackleford, or related in some other manner?
Now then Mr Shackleford also tells us that along with his grandfather, Henry Shackleford, and one or two others that came to Wayne County, Ill., was another woman named Mary Airey, who married Marion Foster. So doubtless this was a daughter of John that first married John F. Airey in 1847, Fayette County, Ohio. She was probably a widow when she married Foster. Or was she a daughter of John W. Airey? and a half sister to Stephen Tiffin Shackleford?
All of the above are questions that we need answers for. Help from any source will be greatly appreciated, either by this writer or by Mr M. T. Shackelford, of Cisne, Ill.
Now for some of the descendants of John and Nancy

Shackleford. We know they had a son William, and that William's wife was Mary, and we are of the opinion that this was the William that married Mary House. However, we know nothing of their children.
Henry, who appears to have been the second child of John and Nancy, was born according to census records, 1804 in Pennsylvania. He was never married, and died at Enterprise, Wayne County, Ill., about 1890.
The next would be the daughter Elizabeth, who, according to Mrs Todd, married a man by the name of "Miller." So evidently that was William Miller that married Elizabeth Shackleford July 18, 1834. And we have no record of their descendants.
The next one, according to records we have, was Stephen Tiffin, son of John and Nancy Shackleford, born in Ross County, Ohio, August 22, 1813, and died in Wayne County, Ill., January 30, 1902.
Stephen Tiffin Shackleford was twice married, his first wife being Sarah Jane Marshall, whom he married in Ross County, Ohio, May 25, 1841. Her parentage and dates not shown. They had two children, as follows:

John Wesley--------(born Dec. 31, 1844, died Aug. 14, 1873)
Stephen Tiffin Shackleford then married for his second wife - Rebecca Tenant, daughter of Alexander Tenant, in Fayette County, Ohio, January 8, 1856. But Stephen Tiffin Shackleford was destined to be a widower again, for Rebecca Tenant was born 1826, and died in Fayette County, Ohio, October 9, 1863. They had but three children, as follows:

Andrew Jackson Shackelford, born in Fayette Co., Ohio, October 3, 1859, and died in Wayne County, Ill., October 25, 1910. He was married to Amelia Jane Trotter, November 24, 1884. Her parentage is not shown, but she was born in Wayne County, Ill., August 24, 1865, and died in Wayne County, Ill., June 29, 1936. They had seven children, as follows:

Estel Perl and Edna May Shackleford were twins.
Samuel Tiffin, Clyde Oscar, Marshall Thurman, and Estel Perl Shackleford all served in the armed forces during the first world war.
And since this brings us up to the present generation we do not deem it necessary to publish more of this particular family at this time.
Lewis Shackleford, son of John and Nancy Shackleford, was born in Ross County, Ohio, September 5, 1817, and died in Cass County, Mo., February 18, 1904. He was a Baptist minister. He was married to Elizabeth Ann Bryant, parentage not shown, May 28th, 1839. She was born March 17, 1821, place not shown, and died in Fayette County, Ohio, April 28, 1864. They had ten children, as follows:

Since we need so much additional information of the above mentioned families, we will give you what records we have of the next generation, and will be grateful for anything additional that any one will pass along to us.
Daniel Tway, parantage and dates not shown, married Evaline Shackleford, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, February 17, 1859 in Fayette County, Ohio. She was born in Ross Co.,

Ohio, May 12, 1840, and died August 17, 1865. They had three children, as follows: William, Ella, and Allie. Descendants did live at or near Stafford, Kansas.
John Allen, son of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, was born in Ross County, Ohio, December 7, 1841, and died September 18, 1920. He was married to Miranda Griffith, her parentage not shown, nor dates, March 24, 1865, in Fayette County, Ohio. They had at least four children, as follows: John, Lucy A., Emily C., and Nelly. Were last known to be living around Peculiar, Missouri.
Jesse, son of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, born in Ross County, Ohio, January 18, 1843, and died in Cass County, Mo., September 27, 1884. He was married to Elizabeth Mills, parentage not shown, December 19, 1866, in Fayette County, Ohio. She was born in Fayette County, Ohio, August 10, 1843, and died in Kansas March 29, 1911. They had five children, as follows: Anna Alma, Albert, Elizabeth, Frank Elijah, and Jesse James. Descendants last known to be living around Coats, Wellsford, and Hudson, Kansas.
Thomas E. Armstrong, parentage and dates not shown, married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, August 30, 1865. She was born August 7, 1845, in Ross County, Ohio, and date of death not shown. They had at least five children, as follows: Amanda, Edwin, Frank, Curtis, and Lida. Descendants last known to be living around Peculiar, Missouri.
William Woodruff, son of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, was born in Fayette, County, Ohio, June 26, 1847, and died August 8, 1930. He was married to Laura Ellen Cline, parentage not shown, February 11, 1875. They had six children, as follows: Ralph L., Leonard, Scott, Eva A., Ada A., and Frank B. Descendants last known to be living at or near Porum, Oklahoma.
Isaac Cahill, parentage and dates not shown, married Eliza, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, December 26, 1869. She was born in Fayette Co., Ohio, October 17, 1851. Date of

death not shown. They had at least three children, as follows: Frank, Netty, and Roy. Nothing more is known of this family.
David Greenlee, son of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, was born in Fayette Co., Ohio, February 22, 1855, and date of his death not shown. He was twice married, his first wife being Clara Conover, parentage and dates not shown, by whom he had two daughters, ie Florence and Marjorie.
David Greenlee Shackelford then married for his second wife - Lura Moore. And of this man's family we have two records, one of them showing that he had the two above mentioned daughters - Florence and Marjorie by his first wife. The second record shows that Florence was a daughter by the first wife and the second, shown as Marjorie Kate, was by his second wife. A correction of this record would be appreciated. Last known place for some of the descendants residence, was Kansas City, Missouri.
William Lytle Todd, parentage not shown, was born at Lexington, Ky., August 29, 1852. He died in Kansas August 13, 1909. He was married to Nancy Ann, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Bryant-Shackleford, April 3, 1890. She was born in Fayette Co., Ohio, September 27, 1860. We are informed that she is deceased, but we do not have the date. They had five children, as follows: Katie Scearce, Avis Bryant, Lucile, William Lewis, and Robert Tiffin.
Mrs Nancy Ann Todd was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1945.
It is interesting to note that William Lytle Todd was born in Lexington, Ky. Therefore it is very likely that he was related to Mary Todd, wife of Abraham Lincoln. We note too, that they named the first daughter - Katie Scearce -, which is another old Fayette and Woodford County family.
We have no further information of Mary Shackleford, daughter of John and Nancy, who probably married first John F. Airey and later Marion Foster.
