LOST TRIBES
It appears that in every branch of any family there are a few that just seem to vanish. Whether by accident or by choice we have never been able to determine, but they seem to pull a fast disappearing act, and from then on no one seems to know what eventually became of them, and few seem to care.
And so it is with several of the descendants of Roger and Nancy Ann Carter-Shackelford. In the last few numbers of the magazine we have been discussing the descendants of Roger and Nancy Ann, and in your October magazine, page 6, we promised you that this month we would continue and conclude the discussion of their descendants. But we may have to retract part of that statement. But we will continue now and give you as much of the records as we can, or as much as we deem necessary at this time.
You will see that we have many records, but also that in order to make the record complete we need many more.
In previous numbers of the magazine we gave you records as we have them, of all the families of the sons and daughters of Roger and Nancy Ann, except the son Carter and the daughter Adeline. We therefore begin their records now, what we have of them.
One Carter Shackelford, said to have been the son of Roger and Nancy Ann, married in Franklin County, Ky., marriage bond dated January 4, 1802, when he

secured license to marry Susan Briscoe. But so far as we have been able to find, that marriage record is the only time his name ever appears on an official document of any kind, unless mentioned in connection with some one else.
That Carter and Susan Briscoe-Shackelford had at least five children is indicated by the following records.
James Briscoe died in Franklin County, Ky., and left a Will wherein he mentioned among several legatees, the following: Polly Brydon, James, Thomas J., Briscoe, and Carter Shackelford. He did not mention the relationship, but we feel sure that it is safe to assume that all five of them were his grand children.
The Will of James Briscoe was dated April 18, 1848, and probated December 1853. Recorded in Will Book 2, page 245, Franklin County, Kentucky.
We find the following marriages in Franklin Co., Kentucky:
James Shackelford married Harriet Martin, daughter of James Martin, bond dated February 18, 1826.
John Bryden married Mary Shackelford, daughter of Carter Shackelford, bond dated May 25, 1831.
One Thomas J. Shackelford married Anne E. Howe, bond dated January 2, 1866.
John Sill married Eliza Shackelford, bond dated May 31, 1832.
James Shackelford and his wife Harriet (Martin), owned land in Franklin County, but in 1850 they were living in Scott County, and had seven children, as follows: Susan, born 1827; Elizabeth, born 1829; James T., born 1831; Robert, born 1833; Luther, born 1835; Richard, born 1837; John, born 1839. We are not certain that this James was a son of Carter, but as Carter married in 1802, and this James married in 1826, it is entirely possible that he could have been.
Mary Shackelford that married John Bryden, was a daughter of Carter, and no doubt is the Polly Bryden mentioned in the Will of James Briscoe.
We will be forever grateful for anything additional on this Carter Shackelford family, from any person or souce.

The next and last child of Roger and Nancy Ann Carter-Shackelford, was the daughter Adeline. However, the late Mrs Ann Carver-Graves, of Nashville, Tenn., thinks there was a son younger than Adeline, and that his name was James.
One James Shackelford married Polly Hollowell, in Sumner County, Tenn., in 1822. That we know. And Mrs Graves thought this was a younger brother of Adeline, daughter of Roger and Nancy Ann Carter. But we have no proof of this, nor do we know what became of James and Polly Hollowell-Shackelford.
Adeline, youngest daughter of Roger and Nancy Ann Carter-Shackelford, married Frederick Binkley. And the Binkleys appear to be one of the most prolific families that we have found in any branch of the family, but prolific in more ways than one, as they have produced many prominent men and women who have made their mark in all walks of life. Good solid substantial citizens - all of them.
Our records show that Frederick Binkley was a son of John and Johanna Leedy-Binkley, that he was born in Stokes County, N. C., February 12, 1774. And he died at Hermitage, near Nashville, Tenn., September 18, 1857. He was married to Adeline Shackelford, youngest daughter of Roger and Nancy Ann Carter-Shackelford, December 24, 1804, in Davidson County, Tennessee. Adeline Shackelford was born in Virginia, probably Ablemarle County, May 17, 1789. She died at Hermitage, Tenn., September 15, 1868. They had fourteen children, as follows:

Thus it will be seen that of the fourteen children of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, thirteen of them lived to maturity, married and reared families of their own.
It will also be noted that they had two sons by the name of Joseph - Joseph Shackelford and Joseph Newton. They also had a son named Henry John and another named John Henry. So evidently they were very fond of the names John, Henry, and Joseph.
Henry John Binkley, eldest child and eldest son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tenn., February 10, 1806. He died in Dickson County, Tenn., February 21, 1887. He was twice married, his first wife being Nancy Emeline Gleaves, whom he married July 8, 1828. Her parentage not shown, but she was born in 1808, and date of her death not shown. They had seven children, as follows:

Henry John Binkley then married for his second wife - Nancy Mills. Her parentage and date of birth not shown, but she died July 21, 1886. They were married December 18, 1845, and they had five children, as follows:

We have very little information of the family of William Blackman Binkley, but our records do show that he was the second child and second son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, and that he was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tennessee, May 11, 1808; and our records show that he lived and died in Tennessee, date of his death being in September 1892. He married Cornelia Emeline Wilson, but the date is not shown, nor do our records show her parentage, but she was born June 9, 1814, and died January 20, 1864. They had twelve children:

It will be noted that of the sons of William Blackman Binkley, two of them died the same day. They died of wounds or were killed in action during the war between the States.
John Henry Binkley, third child and third son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tenn., 1809; and he died about 1848, although we have no definite dates of his birth, death, or marriage. Our records show that he married Mary Walker, her parentage not shown, and that they lived in Tennessee, probably Davidson County. They had ten children, as follows:

Joseph Shackelford Binkley, fourth child and the fourth son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tennessee, November 10, 1810, and died near the place of his birth August 21, 1887. He was married three times and was the father of thirteen children. His first wife was Martha Buchannon Steele, daughter of Samuel Steele and Patience Shane. They were married July 18, 1833, and had twelve children, ie:

Joseph Shackelford Binkley then married for his second wife - Mrs Elizabeth Ivey Holland. Her parentage and date of birth not shown, but she died July 15, 1879. They had one daughter:

Joseph Shackelford Binkley then married for his third wife - Mrs Hettie Ellis Young. No dates shown. They had no children.
Franklin Carter Binkley, fifth child and fifth son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tenn., about 1812 (exact date not shown), and no other dates are shown. The given name of his wife was Indiana, but her identity is not known. They moved to Arkansas,

and our records show that they had seven children, as follows: Robert, Thomas, Marshall, James, Sarah (called Sally), Elizabeth, and Katherine. Additional information from any person or source would be appreciated.
Frederick Marshall Binkley, sixth child and sixth son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tennessee, about 1814. No other dates are shown, but he married Catherine Crockett, and they are shown to have had five children, as follows: Laura, Albert, Florence, Edward, and James. So it will be seen that we need additional information of this family.
James Guthrie Binkley, seventh child and seventh son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tennessee, about 1816, and our records show that he died in 1855, but we have no other vital statistics on this family. But our records show that he married Martha Daniel, and that they had eight children, as follows: Katherine, Susan (Sue), Sarah (Sally), Adeline, Frederick, Beauregard, Annie, and Charles.
Jasper Newton Binkley, eighth child and eighth son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tennessee, about 1818. And we have no vital statistics on this family either. They moved to Texas, but our informant was unable to tell us the City or County that they went to in Texas. He was married three times and was the father of at least six children, as follows: Lou, Della, Lucy, William, James, and Frederick. Lou, the first named child, died in infancy, and Frederick, the youngest child, died at about the age of ten years.
The first wife of Jasper Newton Binkley was Amanda Yarbrough, whom he married in Davidson County, Tennessee, March 21, 1849. His second wife was Cornelia Snell, whom he married July 25, 1854. His third wife was a Miss Moore, of whom we know nothing. And our informant failed to say which of his wives were mothers of his children.

Nancy B. Binkley, ninth child and eldest daughter of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, Davidson County, Tennessee, about 1820. She was married to John Dickson, August 12, 1847, in Davidson County, Tenn. No other dates are shown. They had at least seven children: John, (Nep), (Gus), Annie, Emma, Milton, and Jasper. The Dicksons lived near Clarksville, Tennessee.
Almedia Binkley, tenth child and second daughter of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born about 1822. She married Jacob Kirk, and they had seven children, as follows: Gertrude, Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Tennie, Martha (Mattie), and Emma. They moved to Kentucky.
Robert Foster Binkley, eleventh child and ninth son of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born about 1824, and died in May of 1860. He married Isabella Steele, and they had no children.
Martin David Binkley, twelfth child and tenth son of Fredereick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born about 1826. No other dates are shown. He married Emma Caskey, and they had five children, as follows: James, Ella, Lula, Walter, and Jessie. They lived in Giles County, Tennessee.
Sarah (Sally) Binkley, thirteenth child and third daughter of Frederick and Adeline Shackelford-Binkley, was born at Hermitage, about 1830. She was married to Alfred Bass, August 12, 1847. Our records show they had four children, as follows: John, James, Thomas, and Lucy A. Lucy A., the youngest child, was born in 1861 and died 1864. The only dates the records show. They may have lived in Wilson County, Tennessee.
