REV WILLIAM HICKMAN, JR.
Last month we gave you the family record of Rev William Hickman, Sr, who married Elizabeth Shackelford, daughter of John Shackelford, of King and Queen County, Va. And you noted that his eldest son was William, Jr., who was also a minister of the Baptist faith. And following is the last will and testament of Rev William Hickman, Jr.
"I, William Hickman, being of sound mind and disposing memory, do make and declare this to be my last Will and Testament.
First: That my just debts be paid.
Second: I loan to my wife - Elizabeth, during her natural life or widowhood, the tract of land whereon I now reside, and bounded as follows: Beginning at the northwest corner and running thence with G. Buller and Samuel Reading's line to my northeast corner between Reading and myself - Thence south to the stone corner near my gate, thence ten poles to a stake, thence south to J. B. Robert's line, then with Reading's line west to S. L. Scofield's line, thence with his line north to the beginning. Supposed to contain about sixty five acres, with all and sundry appurtenances thereunto belonging. Also her choice of a horse, bridle and saddle, two cows and calves, ten sheep, ten hogs and three feather beds,

bedsteads and furniture, desk, sideboard, table clock and case, table and cupboard, furniture, pair of looking glasses, six chairs, and kitchen furniture; the whole to be of her own selection.
Third: I forbid the sale of my two negro men - Samuel and Titus, and direct that they be hired out by my executor in any way he may think best, the proceeds to be annually divided among my legatees hereafter named. And the balance of my estate, personal and real and mixed, I direct my executor to dispose of at public sale upon such credits as he may think best. The proceeds of which I give to my children, to wit: George Hickman, Nancy Brown, Lydia Lockett, Patsy Thatcher, William Hickman; and the children of my deceased daughter- Eliza S. Baily, ie America, George, James, Francis, Martha, Lelar, Mary, Obedience, and Lydia Baily; being the children and grandchildren of my first wife. And Mary, John E., Benjamin W., and Elizabeth P. Hickman; children of my present wife, of my now children, share and share alike. The grand children to have their mother's share, to be divided in the same manner.
Previous to any distribution among my children my executor will ascertain what has been given to each of my grown children, and deduct it from what would be their portion so as to place each one upon equal grounds. (Amount of money paid to children listed in annex).
Fourth: I hereby authorize and empower my executors to act in all and every case so as best to promote the interest of my children, to settle all and all manner of claims for or against, to compromise, sell or otherwise dispose of any of my property, make and execute any and all deeds of conveyance for lands heretofore sold, or to sell all of which is and shall be held valid to all intents and purposes.
Fifth: I appoint my friend - Samuel B. Scofield, executor of this my last Will and Testament, and also trustee for my son - George Hickman, also trustee for the children of my deceased daughter Eliza Bailey and trustee for

my four infant children - Mary, John E., Benjamin W., and Elizabeth P. Hickman; and place in the hands as such, the legacies here-in granted to them, respectively to be used for their benefit.
For George during his life time, and afterwards for his heirs, or the others until they arrive at the age of twenty one years respectively.
Sixth: at the death of my wife all the property herein loaned to her shall descend to and be divided equally between my four children, infant children by her, and divided between them share and share alike, towit: Mary, John E., Benjamin W., and Elizabeth P. Hickman.
In testimony of the foregoing two pages containing my will as to the disposition of my property after my death, I declare the fact due consideration and reflection, and therefore sign my name with my own hands, this the seventh day of July, 1843. (July, 7, 1843).

Declaration of Independence - Continued from August 1947.
He has obstructed the administration of justice by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent either swarms of officers to harass our people, and to eat out of their substance.
He has kept among us in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.
He has effected to render the Military independence of and superior to the Civil Power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and accordingly acknowledged by our laws, giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation, for quartering large bodies of armed troops among us.
For protecting them by a mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these States, and for cutting off our trade with all parts of the world.
For imposing taxes on us without our consent.
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury: For transporting us beyond the seas to be tried for pretended offenses; For abolishing Province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once and example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies.
For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws and altering fundamentally the forms of our government: For suspending our own legislature, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated government here by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns and destroyed the lives of our people. He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized Nation.

Last month we told you that we would tell you a little of the Religious Society known as the "Shakers". So now we are going to do just that, although our time was so limited that we did not have the time to learn very much about them.
When a person embraced their form of religion he or she were thought to have shaken off all worldly acts and thoughts, consequently were known as "Shakers". Their origin dates back to some time during the eighteenth century, and the founder was a woman known as "Mother Ann". They believed in having everything in common, and when a person embraced their faith they had to hand over everything they possessed in the manner of property, move in with the other members, and every one shared and shared alike.
The most peculiar principle of their faith was, that they taught the celibacy of both sexes, and when a single person embraced their faith they were not to marry; and when a man and his wife embraced the faith they discontinued cohabitation, and thus family relationships ceased. The married people gave their children over to The Mother Superior, and the men occupied one set of quarters, while the women occupied another. No families were recognized. Which of course would if practiced by all people, bring about the complete extinction of the human race.
Their answer to that however, was that the birth of Mother Ann was the beginning of the Millennium, and that in one thousand years all people would have been converted, passed from this earth's scenes, and consequently no further need for the perpetuation of the human race.
This particular Shaker Colony was located near South Union, in Logan County, Ky. It was established in 1806 and discontinued in 1917. A record of their members and their minutes were kept, and have been published, and can now be found in the College Library, at Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Rev William Hickman, Jr., who will is found in this issue of the Magazine, was born June, 1, 1768, in Virginia, and he died in Kentucky, probably Franklin Co, Dec, 24, 1845. He married for his first wife - Obedience Brown, 1787; and to that union were born six children, as follows:

Elizabeth Taliaferro, daughter of William Taliaferro.
Col Lyne Shackelford married for his second wife - Sarah Taliaferro, daughter of Phillip and Sarah Baytop-Taliaferro, and they are said to have had five children, but the names of only four are now known. The four are as follows:

There are those who disagree with us regarding the second wife, and children of the second wife, of Col Lyne Shackelford. However, we will be very happy to make the correction if and when any person can supply us with authentic proof of the, or to the contrary. (The Editor).

Benjamin Shackelford, son of Col Lyne and his first wife - Elizabeth Taliaferro, was born about 1767, probably in King and Queen Co., Va. He died in Culpepper Co, Va., March, 9, 1819. He married Frances McCulloch, daughter of Roderick and Elizabeth Hanley-McCulloch, May, 17, 1799. To which union born the following children:

Benjamin Shackelford, Sr., son of John and Anne Lyne-Shackelford, was born probably in King and Queen County, Va., about 1729. He died in Culpepper Co., Va., 1817. He married Martha Elizabeth Jones, December, 24, 1770; and they had the following children:
