By the time this issue of the Clan reaches you it will be well into the New Year. So the Editor wishes to take this opportunity to wish each of you happiness, contentment and prosperity throughout 1948.

Our Christmas letters reached us too late to go out with the December Magazine, but since they contained felicitations for both Christmas and the New Year, half of it is still in order, so we are inclosing them with this January issue.

WILL OF STEPHEN SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen: I, Stephen Shackelford, of the District of Marion, and State of South Carolina, being weak in body, but of sound mind, disposition, memory and understanding, do make and ordain this as my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following: Imprimis: I will and discharge the legacies hereinafter contained as soon after my decease as they may be legally and conveniently enabled to do so after my decease. And I bequeath to my dearly beloved wife-Suzannah Shackelford, for once during the term of her natural life, the following property, that is to say: Two plantations or tracts of land purchased by me from John Dozier in his life time, each tract

two hundred acres and known by the name "Point Field" and "Bear Ponce"; Also all the household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools, carts, wagons, and every other article on my plantation necessary for carrying on a farm, also two yoke of oxen, one horse, one mare, my carriage, one mule, twenty five head of sheep, fifteen cows and calves, four head of beef cattle. Also the following slaves to-wit: Rose and her four children, John Sampson, Moses and Chloe, Cain and Nancy. And from and after the decease of my said wife I give and bequeath to all and singular the aforesaid property, real and personal,(except Moses, the son of Rose) in manner and form following: that is to say--one fourth part of the same to my son--John Shackelford, to him and his heirs forever. One fourth part to my daughter--Ann Rogers, to her and her heirs forever. And the remaining two fourths of the same I give and bequeath to my executors hereinafter named, in trust never the less, once to and for the equal and behalf of my daughters Elizabeth Paisley and Mary Moody, for once during the term of each of their natural lives, and from once after the death, their death, I give the property held in trust for said daughters, or her surviving sister, forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son--John Shackelford, one tract of land in Eagerton's Point, adjoining the land above conveyed to my aforesaid wife, containing about 80 acres, and surveyed for me by John Zoxier in his life time; also the following negro slaves to-wit: Pat, Nero, Bob, and Murriah, to him and his heirs forever.
Iten: I give and bequeath to my daughter--Ann Rogers, the negro girl named Nancy, together with her future increase; to her and her heirs forever.
Item: On the death of my aforesaid wife I give the negro boy--Mose, to Eli Jones, to him and his heirs forever.
Whereas I own a moiety of a tract of land of three hundred acres more or less, purchased jointly by my nephew--James Shackelford and myself, from Richard Smith, I now give and bequeath the same

to my said wife Suzannah Shackelford, for and during the term of her natural life, and from and after her death I give and bequeath the same to my grandson--John Baker Shackelford, to him and his heirs forever. And the other moity of said land having been conveyed by me by deed to his father--Stephen Shackelford, during his life time.
Item: In the bequeath to my wife-Suzannah Shackelford of all my household furniture, it is my meaning and intention to convey to her three beds and furniture out of the beds and bedding of which I may died possessed of; and it is my will and desire that the remainder of my beds and bedding, together with such other articles of furniture, plantation tools, etc, as my said wife may not need or have need of, pass into the hands of my executors subject to the dispositions and distribution hereinafter provided in the residuary clause of this my last Will and Testament. Them as I have already given to my aforesaid children--John Shackelford, Ann Rogers, Elizabeth Paisley, and Mary Moody, sundry negro slaves, furniture, stock of cattle, horses, etc, which they have already received and respectively had the possession of, I hereby ratify and confirm the aforesaid gifts.
Item: It is my will and desire that the remainder of my estate by sold by my executors, and the money arising therefrom be applied to the payment of my debts which I may be owing. Should there by any money remaining after the payment of said debts, that the same be equally divided among my surviving children, and that part or portion, that which may be alloted to my daughters Elizabeth Paisley and Mary Moody, be held subject to the same trusts as herein before created.
Lastly: I nominate, constitute and appoint my son--John Shackelford, and my friend Benjamin Holt, executors to this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal and affixed my name, this fifth day of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty four. We have the ancestry of the above named Stephen Shackelford back to the immigrant, but we would like to know more about his descendants. Can any of you give us information of the families of Mary Moody, Elizabeth Paisley, John Shackelford, and John Baker Shackelford, son, grandson and daughters of Stephen Shackelford?.
Descendants of one Stephen Shackelford lived at or near Birmingham, Alabama. Query: Were they descendants of the above Stephen?

We suppose every one was too much interested in Santa Claus this past month to take the time to make a report, but we never received a report of a single birth or marriage.
We regret however, that we do have a report of the death of two of our members.
Miss Dorothy Shackelford, of Pasadena, Calif., passed on to her eternal reward December 8, 1947. Interment at Frankfort, Ky.
Miss Dorothy was born the daughter of Samuel J. Shackelford, and his wife--Mary McGoffin, of Frankfort, Ky. She was a grand daughter of Dr. John Shackelford, of MadisoTville, Ky., and a great grand daughter of Samuel Shackelford and Susan Withers. She was also a descendant of two Kentucky Governors, ie Issac Shelby and Beriah McGoffin. Further details were not given. She was never married.
Jacob W. Shackelford was born in 1883, in Surrey County, N.C., the son of James B. and Martha Hull-Shackelford. He passed to his eternal reward at his home near High Point, N.C., December 17, 1947. Interment in Surrey County, near the scene of his birth. He was a grandson of William Oliver and Louiza (sic) Pringle-Shackelford, and a great grandson of Samuel and Mary Jane Abbot-Shackelford, of Stokes Co., N.C. Survivors and further detaiils not shown.
And on behalf of the entire Clan we extend our deepest sympathy and admonition of hope.

John Shackelford, whose wife was Anne, was in Orange County, Va., dealing in land as early as 1750. He purchased two thousand acres of land from Col James Madison, October, 24, 1765. Deed Book 14, page 53. Orange Co., Va. Then he sold part of the same tract to Henry Shackelford, October, 24, 1771. Deed Book 15, page 418.
John Shackelford and his wife--Anne, deeded the land on which he, John, lived, to his son Edmund, reserving the right for himself, his wife--Anne, and his daughter--Sarah, to live on it the rest of their natural lives. Deed book 16, page 423, and dated November 18, 1776.
Also in Orange County, Va., were the following Shackelfords at one time or another, between 1750 and 1790; John, Jr., 1765; George, 1790; James and Thomas, 1785; Samuel in 1764; Zachariah, 1767; and there until 1787; Henry, 1771 to 1790.
We have proof that both Henry and Edmund Shackelford went from Orange County, Va., to Elbert Co., Ga., where they both died. We also have proof that Zachariah went from Orange County, to Lincoln Co., Ky., and died in Casey County, Ky., 1808.
Records show that men by the name of Samuel, John, James, Thomas, George, and perhaps another one, Shackelford, were in Lincoln County, Ky., by or before 1790. We would like to know if all of the above mentioned men were brothers, and if they were sons of the above mentioned John and Anne, of Orange County, Va.
We have very good reasons to believe that the above mentioned Samuel also moved to Lincoln Co., Ky. Samuel, of Orange Co., Va., bought land from Fisher Rice, also of Orange Co., Nov. 22, 1764. Then Samuel, whose wife was Anne, sold the same tract, Sept. 24, 1767. Deed Book 13, page 488, and Deed Book 14, page 225. Orange Co., Va. When Samuel sold the land he lived in Amherst Co., Va.
Since women named Nancy are often shown as Anne, and since one Samuel Shackelford, of Amherst Co., married Nancy Blaine, and later moved to Lincoln Co., Ky., we feel the Samuel of Orange, whose wife was Anne, is the same as he who moved to Kentucky.

Samuel Shackelford, said to have come into Lincoln Co., Ky., from Amherst Co., Va. Also said to have married Nancy Blaine, daughter of Alex Blaine, and to have had 12 children, as follows:

John, a son of Samuel, Jr., became a medical doctor, moved to Madisonville, Ky. And we have never been able to determine the name of his wife, but he is known to have had two sons, as follows:

Also ancestry of Samuel Shackelford, of Stokes Co., N.C., and Bible and Cemetery records of his family and those of the families of his sons and daughters.
