SHACKELFORD DESCENDANTS IN MASON CO, KY.

For several months now we have had the Shackelfords-Shacklefords and descendants of Mason County, Ky., under discussion. This month we hope to conclude our investigation of this branch of the family.

George Grant married Mary Shackleford, apparently the eldest daughter of James Shackleford, and his first wife, Elizabeth Scott.

WILL OF GEORGE GRANT

In the name of God, Amen:

I, George Grant, Sr, of the County, of Mason and State of Kentucky, being in good health and sound mind, and well knowing the certainty of death, doth make and order this my last Will and Testament in form and manner as follows:

I give and bequeath to my wife, Mary Grant, my whole estate both real and personal, during her life or widowhood. And after my death my desire is that at the death or marriage of my wife that my estate be divided amongst my son, George Grant, Jr, and daughters as follows, namely: My son, George Grant and my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant, Judy Grant, and likewise my daughter, Nancy Moss, once Nancy Grant; and at the death of my daughter, Nancy Moss, her part of my estate to be divided amongst the children of my daughter, Nancy Moss.

2 (686)

I likewise leave to the children of my son James Grant, One child's part to be divided amongst them.

To my daughter, Betsy Lowry, once Betsy Grant, I have already given negroes Lucy and Milly, with their increase, which she has now in her possession; and my daughter Betsy Lowry nor her heirs to have any other part of my negro property.

I likewise give to my daughter, Mary Grant, negroes, Dick and George and Minny, with her increase.

To my daughter, Peggy B. Grant, I give negroes Jerry and Willis and Lucy and Eliza, with their increase.

To my daughter, Judy Grant, I give negroes Daniel and Tom, and negro girls Phoebe and Lydia, with their increase.

And as I have given my children that have left me a bed and furniture, it is my desire that my daughters Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, have a bed well furnitured, each of them. And I likewise give to my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, all the quilts and counter panes of their own make, each their own; and after the death of myself and my wife, my desire is that my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, possess my land for a home as long as they live or keep un-married. At their death or marriage to belong to my son, George Grant.

The negroes I have given my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, is a free gift besides their share of what I die possessed of.

And lastly: I do appoint my son George Grant and Kendall Moss, my executors of this my last Will and Testament.

In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of October, eighteen hundred and twenty four. (October 15, 1824).

Signed: George Grant

William Parker, M. Shackelford, George Shackelford, Silas G. Mason and Francis T. Hord, witnesses.

Probated September 1827.

We copied the Will of George Grant from what was supposed to have been the original entry, but from other records in our possession we believe the date of the probation of his will, as we here have it, is an error. Our records show the following family for George Grant and May Shackelford:

George Grant was born in Virginia, probably Fauquier County, November 30, 1740. And died in Mason County, Ky., November 30, 1836. This would indicate that he lived to be exactly 96 years of age, so it is entirely possible that the records in our possession are in error, and that he may have died in 1826 instead of 1836.

He married Mary Shackelford, eldest daughter of James and Elizabeth Scott-Shackelford, March 12, 1772. Mary Shackelford was born in Fauquier County, Va., January 20, 1752, and she died in Mason Co, Ky., August 25, 1836. They had the following children, shown in the following order:

Elizabeth (Betsy)---------married Dr Lowry)

Mary Eskridge,----------married ??

Nancy Ann,--------------married Kendall Moss)

Margaret B. (Peggy)------married ??

James,-------------------married Elizabeth (Betsy) Neal.

George Jr.,---------------married Jane Lashbrook)

Judith,--------------------married ??

We would be particularly happy to have additional data of the families of Betsy Lowry, Mary Grant, Margaret B. (Peggy), James and Judith Grant.

Kendall Moss was born in Prince William County, Va., July 8th 1774. He died in Mason County, Ky., January 22nd, 1850. He was married to Nancy Ann Grant, daughter of George and Mary Shackelford-Grant, December 1st, 1796.

Nancy Ann Grant was born in Fauquier County, Va., April 14th, 1777. She died in Mason County, Ky., January 18th, 1854. They had the following children:

Lewis,----------------(married ??, died in Miss, 1837)

Caroline,-------------(married John R. Sinclair)

Francis Triplett Hord, was born, probably in Mason Co, Ky., September 19, 1797. He died May 20, 1869. He was married to Elizabeth Scott Moss, daughter of Kendall and Nancy Ann Grant-Moss, September 21, 1826. Elizabeth Scott Moss was born in Mason County, Ky., October 31, 1806. She died in December of 1884. They had the following children:

Mary Grant,---------------(married John R. Clark)

Oscar B.,-----------------(married 1st Nanny Thompson, 2nd Mary J. Perkins)

Although we are now mailing two copies every two months instead of one each month, strange as it may seem, not a single birth was reported to us during the past two months. So may we say again, send us

6 (690)

announcements of all births, marriages and deaths among the Clan members. Only in that way can we be able to keep you posted with family news, and only in that way can we keep the record complete.

We do have two marriages and two approaching marriages to report. They, some of them, may seem a bit belated, but they have just been reported to us.

Mr and Mrs Troy Britton Lansford, of Americus, Ga., announced the approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Mary Agnes Lansford, to Mr Lewis Frank Shackelford, son of Mr and Mrs Ben F. Shackelford, of Carrolton, Ga., the happy event to occur February 2nd, 1952. We presume the wedding was consummated on schedule.

Then we find Dan Cupid shooting his darts and finding the range in an entirely different section of the country, as Miss Marilyn Phyllis Gay, the lovely daughter of Mr and Mrs Alford Chapman and Ruth Layton-Gay, of Denver, Colo., become the charming bride of Mr George Franklin Olson, Sr, of Phoenix, Ariz., May 16, 1952. The wedding vows being exchanged at Shreveport, La., where the groom is now in the service of his country.

The next one reported was a very elaborate affair that we wish we had the space to give you a detailed report, but we have not. In this event Miss Sallye Tucker, the charming daughter of Mr and Mrs Clay B. And Carrie Laneheart-Tucker, of Woodville, Miss., became the bride of Mr Marshall Cook, son of Mrs Edith R. Cook, of St Francisville, in June of 1952. (exact date not shown)

The most recent is the announcement of Mrs Octavia Shackelford, of Parksville, Ohio, of the approaching marriage of her daughter, Miss Evelyn Shackelford, to Captain James W. Ledbetter, of Okolona, Miss. The bride is now employed in Dayton, Ohio, at The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Captain Ledbetter is the son of Mrs Rena Ledbetter, of Okolona, Miss, and is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, at West Point. The wedding to be consummated in Dayton, Ohio, First Avenue Presbyterian Church, July 30, 1952.

So may we, on behalf of the entire Clan, extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes to each and every one of you. May you always be as happy as you are right now.

WILL OF GEORGE M. PAYNE

In the name of God, Amen:

I, George M. Payne, of the City of Maysville, in the State of Kentucky, being sick and weak of body, but of sound mind and disposing memory, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows, towit:

It is my will and desire that my wife, Mary Jane be, and is hereby appointed sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament; and it is also my will that she shall not be required to give security for the performance of her duties as executrix as aforesaid.

I give and bequeath to my wife, Mary Jane, at her own entire disposal and for her benefit, all my property of whatsoever kind it may be, to her and her heirs forever. That is to say, all my property that may be left after the payment of my debts.

In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this the third day of July in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty four. (July 3, 1834)

Signed: George M. Payne

A.M. January, C.A. Vaughn, and Thomas M. Moore, witnesses.

Will Book K, page 19, Mason County, Kentucky.

Probated July 1834.

Our records show that George M. Payne was born in Madison County, Ky., about 1806. He died in

8 (692)

Mason County, Kentucky, in July of 1834.

He married Mary Jane Shackelford, daughter of James and Elizabeth Clarke-Shackleford, December 5, 1831. She was born in Mason County, Ky., February 6th, 1811, and died August 7, 1849. They had only one child--a daughter: Elizabeth Payne,-----------(married James A. Johnson)

Burial: Mary Jane Shackelford Payne Marshall, Leeds Episcopal Church Cemetery, Markham, Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=11847700

Lieutenant John Marshall was born at Happy Creek, now Warren County, Va., July 27, 1804. He died on September 18, 1855, Fauquier Co., VA. Burial: Leeds Episcopal Church Cemetery, Markham, Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=11847700. He married for his first wife, Mary Jane Shackelford-Payne, the afore mentioned widow of George M. Payne, May 18, 1836. Our records show they had the following children: James, William, Charles and Robert Marshall. But in the division of the estate of Lt John Marshall, October 17, 1859, the following legatees were mentioned: James Marshall, Alexander K. Marshall, Mary M. Marshall, John Marshall, Lucy A. Marshall and John Chambers.

The burial records at Find A Grave have the following child from John and Mary which I cannot document at this point

Hester Morris Marshall Marshall  (1852-1908) married to James Paxton Marshall (1849-1943) both laid to rest at: Marshall cemetery alone with their son Richard Marshall (1884-1893) http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=80290026

We have never been able to secure an explanation of the discrepancies in the above records, therefore we would be grateful to any one that can give us correct information of the John Marshall family.

James A. Johnson married Elizabeth Payne, daughter of George M. And Mary Jane Shackelford-Payne, and records show them with the following children: Hamilton Gray, Charles, James, Elizabeth, William, Ethel and Harriet Johnson. But we have no further record of this family, so would appreciate anything additional that any one can offer.

Thus we complete, for the present at least, our discussion of the Shackelfords and descendants of Mason County, Ky. But will be happy to reply to any inquiries that may come to us for additional information of these families.

--------------------

Since the June issue came to you we have been on the trail again, having left here June 6th, and going to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a quick look-see at their records there. Then for a very pleasant visit with our son in California. But more about that later.

Until next month, Adios -- The Editor.
