FAREWELL TO TEXAS

For reasons that will be more fully explained on another page of this issue of the Magazine, this and the December issues of the Magazine will be the last two numbers to be published in Texas, for several months at least.

Texas has been our home for almost thirty years, and we have enjoyed it here, and it is with some what of a feeling of remorse in a manner that we now find it to our pleasure and convenience to move elsewhere; the January issue of the Magazine will be late we are sure, but you will continue to receive it as soon as we are established in our new home, and can get our material with us so that we can give you the information we have. The next issue of the Magazine will come to you from deep in Dixie - St. Petersburg, Florida.

--------------------

In your September and October Magazines we gave you records of the Joshua Coons family, of Fayette County, Ky. We now continue with that same record until we have given you what we have.

Thomas L. Coons, sixth child and sixth son of Joshua and Judith Gayle Darnaby-Coons, was born in Fayette County, Kentucky, December 30, 1819. Our records do not show the date or place of his death, or where he lived after his marriage.

He was married to Miss

He appears from the information we have, to have married a second time, his first wife having been Amanda Smith, by whom he had one daughter:

Annie--------(no other record of her - she died in 1939)

Joshua Alexander Coons, according to the Will of his father Joshua, had some sort of a misfortune wherein he lost one of his hands. We do not know the cause or the nature of the accident, or what ever it was that brought about the misfortune.

We will now bring you up todate on the family news, and we have one very choice item to report at this time. Then we will begin our discussion of the Darnaby Family.

We have but two new subscribers to report this month: Mrs Julian C. Lane, of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs Charles D. Townsend, of West Hartford, Conn., both of whom purchased a complete set of the Magazines and included a subscription to April 1954.

Subscription renewals were received from the following: Miss Emma B. Coons, of Lexington, Ky.; Mrs Lucy C. Ware, also of Lexington, Ky.; Mrs A. C. Ellis, of Los Gatos, Calif.; Mrs R. L. Only one birth was reported the past two months, and that by a non-subscriber. What is wrong with you subscribers, too busy preparing for Santa?

Virginia Gayle, winsome little miss from the heavenly realm put in her appearance at the home of Mr and Mrs William Giles Shackelford, of Columbus, Mississippi, September 11th, 1952.

Congratulations and best wishes to the happy parents and baby too.

--------------------

We have two marriages and one approaching marriage to report to you this month.

Mr and Mrs B. Eubanks McCrary, of Columbus, Miss., announced the marriage of their very lovely daughter - Gladys Elaine, to Mr Arvel Vernon Gregory, Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Vernon and Mary Pulliam-Gregory, Sr., also of Columbus, Miss., September 13, 1952. After a brief honeymoon the happy couple are now at home to their many friends in Columbus, Miss.

Then a few days later that little elf - Dan Cupid found the mark with one of his darts, and as a result Miss Vivian Ellen, the charming daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse Herron Glass, of Louisville, Ky., became the bride of Lieutenant Jame Hugh Powell, son of Mr and Mrs Horatio H. and Natilie Jane Stultz-Powell, also of Louisville, Ky., October 2nd, 1952.

So to all parties concerned we, on behalf of the entire Clan, extend our hearty congratulations and best wishes for long, prosperous and happy lives.

But Dan Cupid has not confined his activities entirely to youth this month, for now we have what may be a surprise for many of you. For ye auld Editor himself, is going to become a bride groom in the next few days, perhaps before this issue of the Magazine reaches some of you.

In 1951 this writer spent some three weeks making a search of the records in the court house at Lexington, Ky. But while there we saw something else other than the court house records. We saw a very lovely lady during the time, and having been a widower for several years we were inclined to cast a few

5 (721)

glances in the direction of the above mentioned lady that were a little more than casual, and we liked what we saw. So to make a long story short, the lady was the lovely and charming Mrs Alverta Pickell, of Lexington, Ky., and St. Petersburg, Fla. And she has graciously consented to become the first lady of ye Editor. The nuptials to be consumated in the very near future, tentative date December 9th, 1952. Mrs Pickell is now at her home in St Petersburg, Fla., where, after our marriage, vows are exchanged, we will spend the winter. Our permanent home to be decided later. Surprised? After about December 15th we will be at home to our friends at 2300 5th St., South, St Petersburg, Fla.

--------------------

And now it becomes our sad duty to report the feature of our little leaflet that we would like to leave out, that of the passing of four of our number, or the report of them since our last issue.

From one report that comes to us this month it would seem that misfortune is somewhat like rain, for when it comes - it pours.

Elizabeth Rowena Shackelford, was born the daughter of George Edwin and Missouri Ellen Medlicott-Shackelford, December 28th, 1880. She died at the Maplewood Nursing Home, Winchester, Va., April 4, 1952, after a long illness. She was never married.

Mrs Alice Lydia Loescher, born the daughter of Dr and Mrs Robert Lee and Georgia Ellen Shackelford-Thacker, of Franklin, W. Va., August 29th, 1899. She died in Franklin, W. Va., May 25, 1951. She was married to George A. Loescher, August 3, 1928. Her husband preceded her in death October 8th, 1949. They had no children.

Marian Virginia Shackelford, sister to Elizabeth Rowena, and to Mrs Thacker, died in 1947.

After the death of her husband Mrs Loescher remained in Texas where they had lived until May 1951. She returned to Franklin, W. Va., May 23rd, and died suddenly two days later. So Mrs Thacker has lost two sisters, a daughter, and son-in-law since 1947.

Another sudden death was that of Mrs Elizabeth

6 (722)

Hughes-Wood, of near Lexington, Ky. Mrs Wood was born the daughter of Theodore H. and Pattie Dedman-Hughes. She was the wife of W. C. H. Wood, of Bryan's Station community near Lexington, Ky. Mrs Wood was visiting a daughter - Mrs C. H. Mahoney, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and died suddenly September 21, 1952. Interment at Lexington, Ky.

Another death was that of Mrs Cora Shackelford-White, at Dayton, Ohio, November 7, 1952. But she was evidently a resident of, or had been, of Versailles, Ky., since that was where the interment was made.

We have no records showing anything of the latter mentioned lady, nor her relationship to the Clan, if any, therefore any information concerning her or her branch of the family, will be appreciated.

And to all of the bereaved, and on behalf of the entire Clan, we extend our most profound sympathy, and offer consolation of faith in He who does all things well, remembering that it is appointed once for all men to die. May God comfort each of you in your great sorrow.

--------------------

We are now going to begin a discussion of the Darnabys of Fayette County, Ky. But since we have an inquiry concerning the Shackelfords lineage of the Darnabys, we are going back first and reply to that inquiry.

Our records show that Roger Shackelford was the first man of the name to come to America. It is not definitely known just when he came to the colony of Virginia, but we do know that Edward Palmer from England, received a patent or grant of 400 acres of land in Gloucester Co., Va., for the transportation of eight persons into the colony, including Roger Shackelford. Reference - The Shackelford Family, by Col Robert B. Shackelford, page 7.

On this same list of eight persons was Mary Palmer, sister to Edward. And it is thought that she

7 (723)

became the wife of Roger. But we have never found proof for this except in the Huguenot Publications, No. 14 (1947-1949, page 137).

That Roger Shackelford was the son of John, is proven by the Will of John Shackelford, a butcher, of New Alresford, whose Will was dated the 26th and proved in the Bishop's Court, March 30, 1647, wherein he mentions his cousin - Roger Shackelford, son of his cousin - John Shackelford.

The father of John, grandfather of Roger, is not known, but thought to have been Lancelot.

Roger Shackelford was baptized in old Alresford, April 23, 1629.

And as before stated, it is not known just when he came to America, but Edward Palmer was granted land for his transportation, among others, June 4, 1658. So he was here by or before that date.

The first reference we have ever found of Roger among the Virginia land records, is a grant of land to Roger himself, recorded in Land Book VI, page 665, and dated November 20th, 1678. But by this record itself, it is shown that Roger already had one plantation.

The name of Roger is last found on the Quit Rent Rolls, of King & Queen County, in 1704. He was a member of the Vestry of Petsworth Parish in 1679. He was Church Warden in 1680 to 1683.

Col Robert B. Shackelford, in his book "The Shackelford Family", page 7, has this to say about the family of Roger, and we quote - "It is not definitely known how many children he (Roger) left to survive him, but certainly James, Francis, and John were his sons, also Zachariah, and very probably others" - end quote. There were other sons apparently, but for this inquiry we need mention only the son James, since he is the ancestor of the person who sent in this inquiry.

James Shackelford, son of Roger and his wife - Mary Palmer, was born about 1660 to 1665, which dates are judged from the date of his marriage. He married Elizabeth Robbins, in Abbington Parish, July 14th, 1687.

8 (724)

According to Col Shackelford, in his book "The Shackelford Family", page 8, James and Elizabeth Robbins-Shackelford, had the following children: James, James, Mary, John, Charles, Roger Jr., Robert, Richard, Jane, and Diana.

The first two sons were named James, so evidently the first one died in infancy or early childhood.

Diana Shackelford, daughter of James and Elizabeth Robbins-Shackelford, married William Darnaby, Jan. 19, 1734, according to Col Shackelford. But we have one record showing their date of marriage as being in October 1732. But both records are supposed to be copied from the old Abbingdon Parish Register, of Gloucester County, Virginia.

Then we know the names of the children of William and Diana Shackelford-Darnaby, as shown in the Will of William Darnaby (see Shackelford Clan Magazine for November 1949). Then for the parentage of John and Edward Darnaby, who came to Fayette County, Ky., for which see Shackelford Clan Magazine for August 1952, pages 5 and 6.

Thus we find the Shackelford lineage of John and Edward Darnaby. And in prior issues of the Shackelford Clan Magazine will be found copies of the Wills of both men.

Now we will begin the discussion of the descendants of John Darnaby, whose wife was Elizabeth Alsop. William Darnaby, our records show to have been the second child and first son of John and Elizabeth Alsop-Darnaby, was born, probably in Spottsylvania County, Va., or perhaps on the road from Virginia to Kentucky, February 1, 1786. He died in Fayette Co., Ky., August 24, 1861. He was married to Malinda Smith, Sept. 17, 1812. She was born July 26, 1791. They had the following children:

Francis Smith---------(married Mary Elizabeth Coons)

Joel Smith------------(married Lucy A. McCann)

Simeon---------------(married Marian Dawson)

James Edward--------(married Mildred McCann)

William G.------------(married Mary E. Arnett)

Lydia T.--------------(married William J. Higgins)

Mary Eliza------------(married James Stevenson)

Until next month, Adios - The Editor.
