Hi ~

I found a reference to my ancestress, Freelove Shackelford, on your webpage for 1955(vol 11, no 3). I hope some Shackelford descendants from Pittsylvania have turned up in the last 50 years. If not, here I am.

I was hoping that you or other Shackelford researchers in your network may have found more information on the Pittsylvania branch since that old publication. Perhaps you know someone who is actively researching in that area.

Here is what I can contribute. Freelove was the daughter of Frank and Nancy Shackelford. I have not been able to find a marriage for them. She was born in Pittsylvania County and died at Leatherwood Creek, Henry County on 11 Dec 1860. This information is in the Henry County Death Register and was reported by her son-in-law, James H. Mise, who gave her age as 85.

She seems to have had a family "without the benefit of marriage.

" Daughter Nancy married James H. Mise in Pittsylvania on 21 Dec 1846.

A son, William H. Shackelford, married Elizabeth J. Williamson on 17 Dec 1867. On the marriage license he gave Freelove as his mother but left the space for father blank.

Your website gave the marriage of daughter Martha to Hezekiah P. Dooley on 23 Oct 1863. According to family tradition, another daughter married a Mr. Wells.

Freelove is listed with a son and daughter, both less than 10, in 1820.

In 1830 she had a son less than 5 (William), a daughter and son between 5 and 10, and a daughter between 15 and 20.

I could not find her in 1840.

She resides with James H. and Nancy Mise in 1850.

According to family tradition, James H. Mise was killed in a sawmill explosion in Henry County in 1863. James H. and Nancy had 7 children who lived with and were raised by their uncle, Billy Shackelford. James H. Mise was my grandmother's (1890-1990) grandfather and most of my information on the family comes from her. She says that Billy Shackelford was ill and shot himself about 1910. Census records suggest Nancy (Shackelford) Mise died around 1875.
