THE SHACKELFORDS: From our old family bible:

"Clayton Shackelford was born Oct. 1, 1807 & died Oct. 22, 1898. He married Jane English on March 17, 1831.

Jane English was born Aug. 23, 1811 & died Feb. 3, 1899.

Clayton was born in Ohio, & Jane was born in Pennsylvania."

Marion Shackelford was my Great Grandfather (my Mother's Father's Father).

The following information is from his obituary published in the May 1, 1914 edition of the Brownsville, OR Times:

"Marion Shackelford was born in Fayette County, Ohio, May 15,1837.

He spent his boyhood days with his parents in St. Joseph Missouri and Louisville, Kentucky, where he was converted & united with the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he lived a faithful member until his death."

"On March 9, 1862, he was united in marriage to Susanna (Bash) Young at the home of the bride in Sommersette, (Wabash county), Indiana, where they made their home until after the call of the Civil War, to which Mr. Shackelford responded, enlisting in Company G 130 Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. During Sherman's famous march to the sea he was wounded , after which he was spared from the field of battle and assigned to hospital work which he continued until the close of the war.

After receiving his discharge from the army he returned to his family and together they traveled extensively, finally locating at Creswell, Oregon, in 1873. In 1877 they came to Brownsville and in 1879 moved to Crawfordsville, Oregon."

Previous to this marriage, Susan had married Jonathan Young on November 9, 1843. "To them was given three children, namely Elias, Mary, & John."

Jonathon met with untimely departure twelve years after their marriage.

Elias Young died at an early age.

At Crawfordsville, Marion "owned farm # 111 free & clear." He also got into horse raising, trading, & leasing. At one time, he drove a mail wagon & team. Later, they operated a hotel called "The Oregon House" (Added, 9/15/1999: building is no longer there, but the current address would be 38347 Glass Street). Susan was called to her eternal home on June 4, 1909. Marion was active for five more years. He was then in the hotel & livery business. He departed this life on April 23, 1914.
