My name is Brenda Irby and I live in Huntington, West Virginia. I am a first-generation West Virginian, however, so my Shackelford roots are not here, but in North Carolina.

This is my Shackelford line:

My great, great grandfather:

Jesse Bectin Shackelford, b. Nov. 17, 1823, in Greene County, NC., d. Oct. 28, 1892; married Lydia ? (b. 1829 d. Jan. 11, 1918).

Jesse was a preacher at the Harts Meeting House, now the Marlboro Freewill Baptist Church in Greene County, NC.

Jesse and Lydia had nine children.

My great grandfather: Benjamin Harvey Shackelford, b. March 5, 1871 in Greene County, NC; d. July 25, 1940 in Pitt County, NC; married Fanny Lee Carraway, b. Nov. 3, 1869 in Greene County, NC, d. Dec. 26, 1925 in Wilson County, NC.

Benjamin and Fanny had 5 children:

1. Verna Lee Shackelford, b. Jan. 13, 1894 in Greene County, NC; d. April 26, 1924 in Wilson County, NC; married Wiley Columbus Evans, b. Sept. 15, 1882 in Greene County, NC; d. March 1, 1947 in Wilson County, NC. He wasthe son of John Evans and Nancy Whitley Evans.

2. Effie Shackelford, b. 1896, d. Aug. 1966

3. Eliza Shackelford, b. 1898, d. April 28, 1976, m. T. R. Joyner, d. 1983.

4. Jesse Bectin Shackelford, b. 1900 d. Feb. 23, 1963, m. Julia Stroud (died Jan. 18, 1964)

5. John William Shackelford, b. 1902 d. May 18, 1977, m. Mandy Walston (b. Oct. 17, 1901, d. 1994)

My grandmother:

Verna Lee Shackelford and Wiley Columbus Evans had 6 children:

1.Douglas M. Evans, b. 1912, d. May, 1971 (buried in Arlington National Cemetery)

2.Lillian Evans, b. 1915, d. 1956, m. Lucien Bissette

3.Woodrow William Evans, b. July 1917, d. Dec. 14, 1985 in Charles Town, WV, m. Eva Gray

4.Milton Earl Evans, b. Aug. 8, 1919 in Wilson County, NC; m. Odella Fraley b. July 31, 1923 in Elliott County, KY. Both are still living.

6.Fanny Louise Evans, b. April 18, 1924, m. Willis Lee Joyner. Both are still living.

My father is Milton Evans.

Most of the information that I have here was given to my mother several years ago by one of my great-aunts before she died. If anyone on this list is connected to this Shackelford line and has additional information, I hope you will contact me.

More information Brenda has sent

Someone on another mailing list sent this to me and asked me to post it to this list, when he found out that I am researching the Shackelford name. I thought someone on this list might be interested, since it does have Shackelford (Shackleford) information. If you want to reply, you can email him at:  Toms Services  or you can reply to this list and I will forward it to him.  Brenda in WV

The following is an extracted copy of the family Bible of Mason and Margaret (Shelton ) Harding. My understanding is that this copy was made by Gordon E. Lyons of Kansas City, MO. The extracted copy was given to Charles Mallette of Houston, Texas, prior to Mr. Lyon's death in 1974. Mr. Mallette sent a copy of it to me, Tony Servies, of Greenback, TN in 1995.

All I have is a typed copy of the original. Since Mr. Lyons evidently extracted this data, I feel that he did not own the original. Due to the wealth of information that this Bible contains, I thought I'd pass it on to other researchers. I do not have a photocopy of the Bible, and in fact have no further information on it. I would like to locate the original version. If you know where it is, please let me know.

Notes: The extracted copy is a typewritten document. It is subdivided into five "pages" which identified the original page numbers in the Bible.

The data is separated into two columns, which I will designate as Column 1, Column 2 below. The original extractor must have had problems reading all of the data, since there are missing data identified by hyphens (---) and question marks (??). Apparently the Bible was illegible or barely legible.

I will faithfully reproduce all of the typewritten information, except portions that are denoted as strikeouts, since these were the typist's errors (as noted in a footnote). I do not have any information on the copyright date of the Bible, so I don't know if it was authentic or a recollection. My notations are identified with my initials (TLS:)

If you use this information in your research, please include everything listed above this paragraph as your source document. I want future researchers to be able to know where it originated, how I came to be in possession of the extracted copy, and to understand the comments.
