Hi Greg,
This is what I have on my line. Haven't been working on it lately and am overwhelmed with deadlines at the moment, but will put your information out to a group of Shackelford researchers and will send you some newsletter information. I have a hunch that all those Elbert Co. Shackelfords are closely related. Best wishes and please keep in touch!

Dear Shackelford researchers,
In trying to organize what has come in so far, it looks as if we are following at least 5 lines, some of which may merge at some point.
1) Roger the immigrant who married Mary Palmer
2) John > Mordecai who married Sarah (Polly) Jones
3) Henry Sr > Henry Jr who married Martha J. Mann> Starling Madison S.
4) Richard > James Carter S. > Robert Carter Shackelford
5) John (Orange Co VA) > Edmund who married Judith Eastin (Elbert Co GA)
-- plus several other lines
The Latter Day Saints will be updating their Ancestral File this fall, so now would be an excellent time to organize information for submission. You do not need to be a LDS member to submit your family line to the Ancestor File. It is an excellent way for researchers working on the same line to get in touch with you. Thanks tcorinne@magick.net
Subject: Mordecai and Edmund of Elbert Co
This is actually directed at Ralph McC. and BritTech (JD?), Is the Mordecai Shackelford, b 1763 in Culpepper Co, VA, son of John Shackelford and Anne, the same one that married Sarah (Polly) Jones?
If yes, have you gotten the source information from the LDS Family History Library for his IGI (International Genealogical Index) entry? I noticed that it is on the same film (451128) as Edmund of Elbert Co.
Ditto above for Ralph?
Most of the following comes from the LDS Ancestral File.
I also noted that BritTech's Mordecai ended up in KY which is where most of the Edmunds other than mine who are listed in the IGI 1994 Addendum were located. From a quick scan, the KY Edmunds would seem to be from the Roger the Immigrant line via James M. Elizabeth Robins > John m. Anne Lyne. That line is being researched by:
James D. Wilks 2081 June Place Anaheim CA 92802
There is also a Rev Edmund Shackleford who has an estimated dob of 1765, an estimated place of birth as Elbert Co, GA, no father, mother or spouse, but descendents of his daughter, Elizabeth (born in Elbert Co., GA in 1791) who married Arnold Thompson. It looks like the Thompson family moved back and forth between Elbert Co. GA and Alabama if the birth places of the children are correct. This family is being researched by:
Jack R. Rushing 877 Sandcastle Drive Corona Del Mar CA 92625
Allen Shackelford who married Elizabeth Maxwell is part of family being researched by:
E.P. Weatherby Jr. 6814 Northridge Dr Dallas TX 75214-3157
He is listed in the LDS Ancestor File. May be working on the wife's line.
Thanks for your patience. Tee
Subject: Roger m. Nancy/Mary Carter
So who has the best documentation about the ancestry of Roger Shackelford who married Nancy (Mary?) Carter?
Most of the LDS Ancestral File researchers (8) show:
1) Roger m. Mary Palmer
2) Francis m. Sara Lewis
3) Roger m. Carey Baker
4) Roger m. Mary Ann Carter they show 0 children for:
1) Roger m. Mary Palmer
2) James m. Elizabeth Robbins and list Elizabeth Robinson (b.England) as a second wife of James (son of Roger m. Mary Palmer), but give an unreasonable date of birth for Robinson: 1837.
Chuck Demastus and Sara Binkley Tarpley show:
1) Roger m. Mary Palmer
2) James m. Elizabeth Robbins
3) Roger m. Carey Baker
4) Roger m. Nancy Ann Carter
A single LDS researcher is concentrating on the James m. Elizabeth Robins line, but only one line of descent, that from their son, John, who married Anne Lyne.
Those LDS researchers who show the descent through Francis m. Sarah V. Lewis and Roger III's wife as Mary Ann Carter are:
F. Rodney & Hasler, 268 W. 1800 N., Sunset Utah 84015
Eric C. Elsberry, 501 E. Rivera, Tempe AZ 85282
Thomas H. Henderson, 1132 Fremont St, Carson City Nevada 89701
Lloyd H. Redd, 4325 Whitfield Ave, Fort Worth TX 76109
Dr. Wendel & Dr. Elaine Walton, 4436 Brickwood DR, Hillard OH 43026
Jennifer Lyne Coon, 114 Bird Ave, El Paso TX 79922
Neva Pace Smith, 654 Shadywood DR, Escondido CA 92026
Delsa Spenser Smith, 3622 Arsenal, Memphis TN 38128
All of the above submissions were made since 1990.
The researcher following the line of James m. Elizabeth Robins producing John who married Anne Lyne is:
James D. Wilks, 2081 June Place, Anaheim CA 92802 submission date 1991.
If these are LDS church members and they have moved, there are other ways to locate their current addresses.
As I mentioned before, the Ancestral File will be updated this fall. I have been told that there are ways of correcting misinformation, although I have never tried to do so.
Subject: Re: "Carter"
Hi Barbara, Your ancestors' use of the name Carter jumped out at me so I started marking "Carter" every time it came up thinking that it must be a surname moved into a given name. Noticed that Chuck Demastus's posting, remailed by Patricia on 20 May under the title "Shackelford News" included:
Roger Shackelford, Sgt in VA rgt of Guards, Revolutionary War, b. 17 May 1744 in Hanover Co, VA, d. 24 Nov 1825 in South Union KY who married: Nancy Ann Carter on 9 Sept 1767. She died in 1798 in Madison Co, KY.
Their children are listed as:
Richard Shackleford m. Martha (Patsy) Spears in Albemarle Co VA.
William Shackleford
John Shackleford
Sarah Shackleford
Roger Shackleford IV
Nancy Ann Shackleford
Carter Shackleford
Adeline Shackleford (Sara's ancestor)
Second wife of Roger Shackelford: Sally Laird
Their children are:
Zachariah Shackleford
Montgomery Shackleford
Barney Shackleford
Hudson Sahckleford
Isn't that your Richard listed as the first son?
Subject: Roger m. Carey Baker
Barbara Palser and I were discussing her line and the DAR records and I found the following in some photocopies I have. Perhaps someone who is more actively working with this line could give fuller or more up to date information. This came from an older DAR book, but I failed to copy the copyright page. --Tee
Roger, b. 1744 d 11-24-1825 m (2) Nancy Carter (3) Sally Laird Sgt VA
Roger, Sr: b. c. 1700 d. p. 12-24-1779 m. (1) Carey Baker (2) Mrs. Drucilla Hendrix PS VA
Jun. 2, 1997
Subject: Roger + Mary Palmer's children
Roger Shackelford + Mary Palmer's children are listed in the LDS Ancestral file as:
Benjamin
* James CD
Zachariah
* John
* Francis CD
Zeheriah
Charles
Roger
William
However, I could only locate descendents for the ones marked with a *.
Chuck Demastus has the same list omitting Zeheriah (who, according to LDS AF, had a wife named Ann), but showing descendents for only 2 of the lines, marked CD.
Do any of you know of researchers working on other lines of descent form Roger + Mary Palmer? Best, Tee
Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 From: Corinne and Brown <tcorinne@magick.net> To: Shackelford -- BritTech <brittech@america.net>, Subject: Re: Francis Shackelford In the meantime, here's what I have about Francis Shackelford- one of the known children of Roger, the immigrant:
1. Francis - Born c1668 Essex Co., Va.; married by 1706 to Sarah Virginia Lewis (sister of Zachary Lewis); d. c1722. Among many children was Roger (b.c. 1700 & d. 1779) who married Carey Baker and lived in Hanover Co.
2. Henry
3. John - married Ann Livingston
4. James - Married 14 July 1687 to Elizabeth Robbins (grand-daughter of John Robbins of Robin's Neck, Gloucester Co.) at Christ Church, Middlesex Co.; d. 2 Aug. 1748
5. Zachariah
Taken from "Lewis Patriarchs of Early Virginia & Maryland" by Robert J.A.K. Lewis, Heritage Books, Inc., Bowie, MD: On page 138, there is a chart for Richard Lewis who came to Virginia c1638:
Richard Lewis = Frances __?|
John Lewis= Sarah, d/o Henry of Petsoe Parish, Nicholas (Neighbor Gloucester Co., Va. of Richard Lewis
Sarah Lewis= Francis Shackleford of Essex Co., Va. (son of Roger Shackleford ) land adj. Edward Roe's in Petsoe Parish. Had issue - (does not give names)
There is another mention of the Sarah Lewis & Francis Shackelford marriage on page 136 that gives Essex Co. Deeds XII (1704-7), p. 372 as the reference.
Also on the same page is Zachariah Shackleford listed as a witness - April 1775, Middlesex Co., Va. (Court Papers) in case of: Wm. Taliaferro & Wm. Collier, ex. of Wm. Tuggle vs. Eusubias "Saby" Lewis and Richard Allen
This book features 7 different Lewis families from Wales. The one that Francis Shackleford married into was Lewis (Ednywain ap Bradwen) of Abernant Bychan, Cardiganshire. "This family is descended from the founder of the 15th Noble Tribe of North Wales, whose arms are 3 silver snakes in a knot on a red shield. The crest, a horse's head couped, bridled proper, comes from the marriage to an heiress of the Grono Goch family, whose arms are a red bridled horse's head on a silver shield." Grono Goch's lineage goes back to Yspwys of Moel Ysbiddon which means "Mount of Strangers" since he is thought to have come from Spain with Uther Pendragon and Aurelius Ambrosius. The Tudor sovereigns traced back to Yspwys through Marchudd (the founder of the 8th Noble Tribe of North Wales). In Virginia, the family of Zachary Lewis (Sarah's brother) used the arms on their silver.
This was in a letter to my grandmother from a Lewis: "Sarah Lewis, wife of Francis Shackelford, who she married in Gloucester or Essex Co., Va., some time before 1700.
They lived in Essex Co., Va. (c. 1690 - 1710/12). Francis Shackelford was in Carteret Co., NC as early as 1713. He died by 1726. Saewis was the sister of Zachariah Lewis. They immigrated to Virginia from Warwick, England."
