Sara, listed in the Fleming Co., KY. marriages I find: Sprigg Shackleford to Carra McClure on June 20, 1878

I have a Sprigg Shackleford, s/o John Shackleford b: 3/8/1801 near Maysville, Mason Co., KY, d: 1/4/1885, married Ann Chambers 12/23/1833, does anyone know if this is the same Sprigg Shackleford????  Patricia

My information is that this is that the Sprigg Shackleford who married Carra McClure was indeed the son of John Shackleford and Ann Chambers. My source is Kentucky Ancestors, Vol. 5, No. 1, p. 13, quoting "Brief Memoirs of John Shackelford, M.D.," abstracted by John Shackelford, published June 9, 1885:

"Dr. John Shackelford of Maysville, born March 8, 1801, Mason County about six miles from Maysville - died January 4, 1885. His father, James Shackelford, was born in Fauquier County, Virginia. His mother was Elizabeth Clarke (died in 1821) a native of  Northumberland County,Virginia. December 23, 1833, James [sic--must mean John sbt] Shackelford married Ann, daughter of James and Ann Chambers, who for 51 years was his faithful wife. Dr. John Shackelford had 7 children--five sons and two daughters. The sons were: John, James, Charles, William C., and Sprigg Shackleford. The daughters were Mary, died aged 4--Nannie died aged 8.

John Shackelford married December 23, 1833 Mrs. Ann (Chambers) Coburn."

Patricia, What fun. Not just another Shackleford but another homeschooler as well. Actually I only have my two youngest, boy and girl, both 9. We also have daughters 22, 20, and nearly 14 and a son 17.

I was so thrilled to find your page. I have recently revived an interest in family history that I have had since childhood. I am handicapped in doing basic research by time, money, and not driving. My maiden name line, Binkley, is so well researched that I think most of us Binkleys are down to doing picky little questions. However, I am really interested in these days about my Shackleford ancestry of which I know little. Recently I received a little bit more from a distant Binkley cousin, Chuck Demastus. However, some of it conflicts with a message on your query board (which I think is a great idea.) Anyway this is what I have:

John Shackleford (no other information) father of Roger Shackleford (no dates) m. about 1659 Mary Palmer (no dates) parents of:

(1)Francis Shackleford (1664-1726) m. Sarah Virginia Lewis                                    (2) James Shackleford (no dates) m. on July 14, 1687 Elizabeth Robbins (no dates) parents of Roger Shackleford (no dates) m. Carey Baker (no dates) parents of Roger Shackleford (1744-Nov. 24, 1824) m. October 13, 1767 Nancy Carter (d. about 1798, dtr. of Charles Carter and Nancy Ann Byrd), parents of                                                 (1) Nancy Ann Shackleford ( Oct. 8, 1779-April 26, 1870) m. November 24, 1796 Henry Guthrie (no dates)                                                                                               (2) John Shackleford (no dates)                                                                                     (3) Elizabeth Shackleford (no dates) m. ? Busby (and your page has just supplied his first name)                                                                                                                              (4) Adeline Shackleford (May 17, 1789-September 15, 1868) m. Frederick Binkley (Feb. 15, 1774- Sept. 12, 1857) on December 24, 1804

All of the records down to the marriage of Roger Shackleford and Nancy Carter (plus the names of Nancy's parents) are what I received from Chuck Demastus. He wrote that he got the info from his uncle and would have more source information in a month or two. From Roger and Nancy's marriage down, except for Frederick's dates, is from the family Bible record of Joseph Shackleford Binkley published in Jeannette T. Acklen's Bible Records and Marriage Bonds.

Frederick's dates are from Moravian Church Records in NC and his tombstone.

Joseph Shackleford Binkley was Frederick and Adeline's son. Adeline and Frederick are my gg grandparents through another of their 14 children,

William Blackman Binkley. Frederick sometimes gave his last name as Pinkley. He and another carpenter built the original part of one of Nashville'shistoric homes, Travelers Rest, for one of the area's early leaders, John Overton. I recently visited Frederick and Adeline's graves which were moved in the 1960's when a dam was built on the site of their log home. (I still have not forgiven the Corps of Engineers!)

Feel free to add any marriages above to your marriage list. (I guess you'll need to start a TN page. As far as I know Frederick and Adeline were married in Davidson Co., TN, as Frederick, born in NC, came to TN before 1800. ) The Joseph S. Binkley records say that Adeline and all her siblings were born in VA, but the 1850 Census gives her birthplace as Kentucky.

Well, this mom is staying up way too late doing family research. So glad to have found you. Peace and blessings, Sara Binkley Tarpley

This is a second note from Sara to Patricia and Patricia's responce to it that follows:

4/18/97  Patricia,  Okay, let me see what I can figure out here. My list of Roger Shackleford and Nancy Carter Shackelford's children includes only, Nancy Ann, Elizabeth, John, and Adeline. There is no information about John. Do you think his name could actually have been James? Of course, we can't assume that. The dates would fit, however. It is also possible that there were other children. My source, the Family Bible of Joseph Shackleford Binkley, published sometime in the 1930's in Acklen's Bible Records and Marriage Bonds, has yielded inaccurate or inconsistent information before; so it certainly could here also.

As for the Roger who married Carey Baker as being the son of Francis, does your book show the source of the information? I got my info from Chuck Demastus, who got it from his uncle, Don Jeter, whose source I don't know. (Chuck is another descendant of Frederick and Adeline as is his uncle, I believe. Chuck is in MS, Don in TN.) I have Don's address and could find out though, I guess. Your information may very well be better than mine.

I am going to try to get to the library tomorrow. I had just discovered some new sources the other day when I had to leave. Hoping to solve all our problems,  Sara

My Reply to Sara:      Patricia

Hello Sara, Taken from "The Shackelford Family" Its English and American Origins, And Some of Its Branches, by: Robert B. Shackelford, published in 1940, page 8 has the following:

James son of Roger, born about 1660, married Elizabeth Robins at Christ Church Middlesex County, July 14, 1687.***** James and Elizabeth resided in Abingdon and Ware Parishes in Gloucester, where James died in 1734, leaving a son James and many other children. Elizabeth lived to be very old, about 98, when she was buried Aug. 2, 1748.

James brother Francis married Unknown Sarah, he left a large number of children of which one was Roger born about 1700, died 1779, married Carey Baker. He lived in Hanover Co. ( We have information that this Sarah was Sarah Lewis, if I read correctly)

John Shackelford, son of immigrant Roger, married Miss. Livingston of South Carolina and aquired large landed interests in King & Queen Co., VA.

The remaining son of Roger the immigrant, Zachariah, also settled in King & ueen Co., VA.

This writer states there were most likly more children, but he was unable to find their names at that time.

"Hines and Alliied Familes" by: Benjamin McFarland Hines, page 96 has the following:

In 1703 Francis Shackelford is shown as living in Sout Farnham Parish, Exxex Co., and married to Sarah Lewis (Exxex C. Order book 3, pg. 57). Sarah was a sister to Zachary Lewis, a lawyer who came to the Colony from Wales in 1692, according to the Callaway manuscript. This Francis is our earlliest known and provable Shackelford ancestor.

There is also another book I had copied some things out of, I have missed placed all but the cover page, "George Shackelford and Annette Jeter and Their Descendants", Editor-in-Cheif, Edward Madison Sshackelford President Emeritus, State Teachers College, Troy, Alabama and Assistant Editor, Franklin Shackelford Mosley, Director Wesley Foundation, Auburn, Alabama. published in 1941. When I find these pages will forward the information.

When I get the time I will type up all these bits & pieces from the photo copies I have of these books and posted them to my web page.

Patricia,  Thanks for your note. I have to confess that I didn't have much luck at the library yesterday. I found lots of Shacklefords but couldn't sort them out with the info I got from you, and I had no luck connecting your James Carter Shackleford with my Nancy Carter who married Roger although it just seems as though there ought to be doesn't it? (However, I am not so new at this that I don't know the perils of "ought.") Let us not give up!

I have to admit it seems to me that it is more interesting to be descended from Francis than from his brother; so, I like your version better than the one I got from my other source. However, I do have a few questions. Are James and his brother Francis the sons of Roger Shackelford and Mary Palmer as my source states and as I believe I also saw on your "queries" page? Or is this not proved? If it is proved, would this Roger, husband of Mary, not be our oldest known ancestor?

The following from Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Vol I, 1666-1695, Abstracted and ordered by Nell Marion Nugent, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Co., 1963. She includes from Virginia Patent Book No. 4 (from the 1683 transcription of Book I by Clerk Edward Harrison):

Edward Palmer, 400 acs. in Petomeck freshes, lyeing up a creek between land of Capt. Brent clled Puscatoway Neck and land of Henry Vincent . 4 June 1658 , p. 179, (267). Trans. of 8 pers: Mary Palmer, Roger Shackleforth, Tho. Hall, Thomas Kibble, Guy Knight, Jane Annis, Richard Palmer.

The compiler explains that "trans" stands for "transportation" and that the London Company awarded 50 acres of land for every person whose transportation costs were paid for by a colonist. It appeared to me that this was quite likely the Mary Palmer and Roger Shackleford that my other source said were married the following year. However, that is irrelevant if these two are not the parents of James and Francis.

To further confuse the issue, in the above work, Vol II, 1666-1695: Patent Book No. 6 Dunkin Bohono (Bohonno), & Jno. Mechen, 220acs. Gloster co., upon the head of the E. most Riv. in Mockjack Bay; 20 Dec. 1667, p. 102. Adj. lnds of Mr. Amestead & Capt. Dudley. Trans. of 4 pers: Tho. Okay, so where would this Roger fit in as presumably the same Roger was not transported twice? (I don't expect you to know necessarily; I'm just thinking out loud.)

From the same second volume: Patent Book No. 7 Charles Roane, 700 acs., Gloster Co., upon Dragon Sw., p. 2. Adj. John Cant, Thomas Dawkins, Roger Shackleford, Jno. Davies, Mr. Jno. Carver, James Reynolds &c.

Beverley; to his own plantation; adj. William Norman & Thomas Amies' land, &c. Said land due by two purchases from Mr. Samll. Patridge & Thomas Hancks (or Haucks), who are now both deceased.

Yesterday, I also found a very interesting letter written February 13, 1744/5 by Patrick Henry, Sr., the uncle of the famous Patrick Henry. P.H. Sr. was a clergyman, and in his letter he has some very sharp words for a Roger Shackleford, with whom he had a theological dispute. Henry became the rector at St. Paul's Parish in Hanover in 1736. The letter was published in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography but I seem to have failed to note the volume no. and date. I can provide you with a copy if you wish. I would do so now but am pressed for time and don't have a scanner.

From the same periodical Vol. 63, No. 1, Jan. 1955, some minutes of the Hanover Presbytery.

From the minutes of November 17, 1756: The Presbytery met according to Appointment, ubi post Precessederunt, messieurs Samuel Davies, Robert Henry, John Wright and John Todd, ministers. Rodger Shackelford, Joseph Morten, John Morten, and Tucker  Woodson, Elders.--absent messieurs Craghead, and Brown.

I also found this notice in the above periodical, Vol. 38, pp. 177-178, (forgot to note year but some years back) "Shackelford Genealogy now being compiled."

Readers were invited to contribute information relevant to:  John 17 Dec. 1781 (son of Francis and Sarah) m. 1730 Anne   Issue: Wm. 1732   Easter 1734-1761 - Stephen Williams   Sarah 1737-1756 - Lott Williams   Benjamin 1754   Ann 1755

And finally, one last question. I found lots of references to a Zachary Lewis (1702-1765) who married Mary Waller in 1725 and who was a Burgess from Spotsylvania Co. between 1758-1761. He is shown as having sons John, Zachary, Waller, Benjamin, and daughters Meriwether, Betty Littlepage, Lucy Ford, Dorothea Smith, according to his will. What if any is the connection between him and the Zachary who is Sarah's brother? Do you know?

Well, make whatever use you wish of this, of course. I must run deal with someone who has given my Binkley great-grandparents a child I don' t believe they had and make copies of photos to send to the youngest and only surviving son of my father's half-brother, whose family has been "lost" to the rest of the family since before my birth in 1947. He is 73 years old, and I just found him about a month ago with some help from the Internet. It was quite a moving experience, and we hope to meet in person in the next couple of months.

Do I have to tell you that my house is not immaculate these days? Peace and blessings, Sara

If I am reading this correctly, this would not be a third Roger. I think this is saying that Charles Roane's property is adjacent to that of Roger Shackleford, among others.

I think that this is not another Roger but a purchase by Roger of this 213 acres.

I replied: John 17 Dec. 1781 (son of Francis and Sarah)**********This Johns date of birth has to be wrong as he married in 1730,

Sara replied: Ooops. I will try to check this next trip to library to see who goofed here. Am glad you already have a date.

Will send you Patrick Henry letter after I get to a copier some time later this week. If it hasn't arrived in a couple of weeks, yell again. I am getting absent-minded in my old age.

I am in Tennessee, Nashville, to be exact.

This is not the greatest place to be doing Va. research. On the other hand, it would be a lot worse if I were doing New England research. I understand the State Library and Archives has better resources than the Nashville Public Library I've been using. State hours are only weekdays though, and I don't think any nights. I hope to be able to spend some time there this summer when I have my built-in baby sitters home from school to watch my two nine-year-old home schoolers. Peace and blessings,  Sara

Yes, Roger is the first of the American line, but then some feel he had a brother John that also came at the same time, but I have been unable to find anything on him. As for Roger & Mary (Palmer) sons to be proven, only proven from published sources to my knowledge. I have eight sons and no daughters listed for them, first being James born 1660.

Edward Palmer, 400 acs. in Petomeck freshes, lyeing up a creek between land of Capt. I would not think, (but then again without documentation we may never know for sure), there was a second Mary Palmer, and I wonder if this Richard may have been her father as nice woman in those days did not travel alone, so maybe Edward came first to see the new land, then sent for his sister and father or maybe even Richard could be a brother.

However, that is irrelevant if these two are not the parents of James and Francis. ********That is very true.

Subject: Re: "Carter" (from P. Viellenave) (fwd)

I may be repeating myself here, but Adeline was married in Tenn. I am trying to find out how and why she ended up in Nashville. Our family records show the date of the marriage as 24 Dec. 1804. The official record (below) shows the date of the bond or license, I suspect.

Davidson County, Tenn., Marriage Book No. 1, page 80:  Frederick Binkley to Adeline Shackleford, 12 Dec. 1804

 Hi Tee and Donna,

Thanks so much for responding to my query for information on Zadoc Daniel and Paschal J. Shackelford! My gggrandfather was Zadoc Shackelford. My uncles and a descendant of Paschal have been researching these two since 1950.

There was a good deal of correspondence around that time with Mrs. T.K. Jones of Texas and almost every record in GA and AL was culled, but the Shackelford ancestry has eluded us. With the ability to network through the internet, I hope that we may finally solve this mystery!

I'll give you some history of what we do know/speculate and also the correct genealogical data on Paschal and Zadoc, their wives, and children.

Paschal J. and Zadoc Daniel Shackelford, according to US Census records, were born in Georgia in 1800 and 1804 and came to Jefferson County, AL c.1820. It is speculated that they were orphans, because notwithstanding their youth, they brought with them the means to buy considerable property and they had personal acceptability that enabled them to marry into a prominent Jefferson County family, the Hickmans. They may have traveled to Jefferson Co to be with other relatives or family acquaintances (the Hickman and Pullen families had lived in Wilkes/Elbert Co before moving to Jefferson Co). Zadoc remained in AL where he died in 1845, while Paschal moved to Union Parish, LA shortly before 1860 and probably again with his son Felix to Arkansas.

Even though there is an Alabama reference stating that Stephen was Zadoc's father (I do not have the citation, but I note from Donna that this information is included in the Henry Shackelford book), my uncles questioned this (as did Donna) because of the ages. Since Stephen Shackelford was known to the family as "Uncle Stephen," we think he was more likely Zadoc's brother.

There was a theory that the boys were the sons of the elder Henry Shackelford from a second or third marriage to a much younger woman; that he died sometime between Zadoc's birth in 1804 and the 1810 census; that the Shackelford family did not accept the young widow; and that she took the boys to raise them with her kin. But it appears that Henry didn't die until c. 1819! There was also speculation that the mother's maiden name might have been Paschal since there were families by that name living in Elbert Co.

Please let me know if you have any ideas! In the meantime, here's information on Zadoc and Paschal:

Fri, 30 May 1997   Subject: Re: Roger m. Nancy/Mary Carter

Well, my documentation is slim. Most of my information comes from Chuck Demastus

Adeline (or Adaline) Shackleford Binkley is my gg grandmother. My own information regarding her is limited to the following sources:

The Family Bible of Joseph Shackleford Binkley published in Jeannette T. Acklen's Bible Records and Marriage Bonds which states that the children of Roger and Nancy Carter Shackleford were born in Virginia and that they were Elizabeth, who married Mr. Busby, Nancy Ann (8 Oct 1779 - 26 April 1870) m.14 Nov. 1796 Henry Guthrie, Adeline, born 17 May 1789, m. Frederick Binkley 24 Dec. 1804, and John with no dates. Chuck Demastus has names of other children. At least one census reports that Adeline was born in Kentucky, not Virginia.

[Joseph Shackleford Binkley was the son of Frederick and Adeline.]

The marriage date of 24 Dec.. is also the one shown in records received by me from my aunt, Sarah Isabell (Sallie Belle) Binkley Rippy about 30 years ago.

The Davidson County marriage book (Davidson County, Tennessee, Marriage Book, Bk. 1, p. 80) shows

Frederick Binkley to Adeline Shackleford, Dec. 12, 1804. Since usually there were two dates shown, one for the bond or license and one for the ceremony, I assume that the Dec. 12 date was not the actual date of the ceremony, which was Dec. 24.

Adeline's date of death September 15, 1868, is shown in family records inherited by me and also on her tombstone. I have seen the tombstone although it is very worn. Although some family records show the date as 1865, I think that is because of the wear of the tombstone. Acklen's Tennessee Tombstone Inscriptions and Manuscripts shows 1868 as do the records of the cemetery to which Adeline's grave was moved in the 1960's to make way for a dam.

This is absolutely all the documentation I have about Shacklefords that I have not received from others online, and it isn't much help in going back in time.

As to whether Roger, father of Adeline was descended from James or Francis, I recently discovered in a book at the library (name escapes me, will check tomorrow, some of you may know) that this controversy goes back decades.

Sure wish one of us could solve the mystery. Would love to see the reasoning and documentation behind each argument.

Sat, 31 May 1997        Subject: Re: "Carter"

Well, as I said earlier, most of my information matches Chuck Demastus   because it came from him.

To confuse the issue further, just got back from doing a lot of Shackleford research at the TN State Library and Archives. Perhaps this material is familiar to those of you who have been researching Shackleford longer than I have, but here goes.

This from Shackelford Clan Magazine, Vol. 1, No. 1, May 1945, remarks by T.K. Jones, Editor.

Roger Shackelford m. Nancy Ann Carter 13 Oct. 1767.

Children:

1. Richard m. Martha (Patsy) Spears, may have married in Albemarle Co., Va.

2. Edward m. Mary Peasley in Madison County, Kentucky

3. William m. in Madison Co., KY

4. John - may have married in Albemarle Co., VA

5. James m. Margaret (Peggy) Simpson in Madison County, KY

6. Elizabeth m. James Busby in Albemarle Co., VA

7. Sarah m. ? Porter in Albemarle Co.., VA

8. Thomas

9. Roger m. in Madison Co., KY

10. Nancy Ann

11. Carter m. Susan Briscoe in Franklin Co., KY

12. Adeline

Roger moved to Madison County, KY about 1791-1792.

And from the same magazine, Dec. 1945

Roger, b. 1774, Hanover Co., VA, m. Nancy Ann Carter 13 Oct. 1767, d. near South Union, KY 1824

"He was a Shaker."

Children:

1. Richard b. ?

2. Edward b. ?

3. William b. 13 Nov. 1770, d. KY 1828

4. John b. ?

5. James b. ?

6. Elizabeth b. 18 Oct. 1774 d. ?

7. Sarah b. ?

8. Thomas b. 1 June 1776, d. June 1835

9. Roger, Jr. b. ?

10. Nancy Ann b. Oct 8 1779, d. Apr. 1870

11. Carter b. ?

12. Adeline b. 17 May 1789, d. Sept. 1868

Trouble is, Mr.Jones did not cite any sources. (At least he was consistent and did not change the number of children between issues.) So where did he get this information?

I was especially intrigued by the statement that Roger was a Shaker. If he had 12 children by Nancy and 4 more by Sally, he must have become a Shaker very late in life because, as we all know, the Shakers did not believe in marriage and reproduction. There was a Shaker community at South Union, however.

Well, that's my .02 worth for now.

Sat. 5 Jul 1997        To: tcorinne@magick.net         Subject: Shaker Shackelfords

Dear Shackelford/Shackleford cousins,

Last Friday I spent a quiet morning in the library of the Shaker Museum at South Union, Kentucky, researching the records pertaining to my ggg grandfather, Roger Shackelford, and other Shackelford family members who were either members of the Society of Believers at South Union or who resided there at some point during the nineteenth century. Below is the information they have on file, which I copied from typed transcriptions of the original manuscripts. I have also added comments under each person and would appreciate any additional information or insights that anyone might have.

I noted with some amusement that Shackelfords seem not to have made very good Shakers!

Regards,  Sara Binkley Tarpley

>From the History of the South Union Shaker Colony, transcribed by Harvey L. Eades in 1870 from original journals and diaries pertaining to South Union Roger Shackelford, Sr. and Sally Laird Shackelford Sat. July 10, 1813, p. 186 Arrived - Roger Shackelford & family from Tennessee. Sab. July 18, 1813, p. 186   Confession - Roger Shackelford, Jos. Allen & Sally to Nancy Rankin. Tues., Dec., 7, 1813, p. 194   Move - Roger & Sally Shackelford to Black Lick. Their two children to school -

Coming In - Roger Shackelford, Senr., Wife & 5 children came & a Black girl-- thus ebbing & flowing--in & out.   [The "ebbing & flowing" refers to an entry just prior regarding a couple who left. sbt]   Thurs., Feb. 29, 1820, p. 293   Building - Old Daddy Shackelford's cabin raised. Thurs., April 6, 1820, p. 295

The Aged Brethren, Charles Eades - Daddy Shackelford & Sally also.  Sab., January 27, 1822, p. 323

Demise - Roger, alias Old Daddy Shackelford died & buried.

>From Death Records at South Union (Titled "Necropolis, A List of Names of The Brethren & sisters Who have died in this Society, Since the year 1810")

Roger Shackelford, Born in Virginia in the year 1756. Died November 24, 1825,   Age 80 years.

Near the end of the records is a membership list which shows for Roger the following dates: Roger Shackelford, b. 10 Dec. 1754, d. 16 Nov. 1824, age 80

Sallie's death is listed twice in the list of deaths. Sallie Shackelford, Born in Virginia October 1st 1776. Died, Jan. 19, 1825, Age 49 years. Sally Shacleford [sic], Oct 1, 1776, Jan. 19, 1825.

In the membership list it is shown Sallie Shackelford, b. 1 Oct 1776, d. 19 Jan. 1825, age 49.

Comments from    Sara Binkley Tarpley

1. Most glaring is the inconsistency in Roger's dates of birth and of death. The birth dates shown are not possible if the date of Roger's marriage to his second wife, Nancy (or Mary) Carter, 1767, is correct. Furthermore, the 1744 birthdate comes closer to making him 80 years at time of death. The dates of death shown in the list of deaths and the membership list are the ones that most of us are familiar with. However, it seems to me that it would be very difficult to make an error in a diary entry and that the diary date of 27 January 1822 is more likely. On the other hand, since the diaries and journals appear to have been put together at a later date, there may also be errors there.

2. It appears that Roger and Nancy may have entered the Society twice. There was a great deal of coming and going. On the other hand, maybe they did not become full-fledged members until 1816. The entry about Roger's cabin being raised in 1820 is puzzling as the Shakers lived communally.

Perhaps this was some kind of concession to age or infirmity.

Betsy Shackelford   Sat., Feb.. 17, 1816, p. 227 Confession - Betsy Shackelford, Rogers wife to Sarah Lowry - Her children also confessed to day. Sat., June 22, 1816, p. 235

Demise - Betsy Shackelford died at Black Lick buried next day.  Death record:   Betsey Shacleford [sic] June 24, 1816. Betsy's death is recorded twice in the membership list:

Betsy Shackelford, b. 11 May 1804, d. June 24, 1816, age 12

Betsy Shackelford, b. 16 July 1802, d. June 24, 1816, age 14.

Comments: Betsy is identified in the journals as the wife of the younger Roger. It is also mentioned that she had children. Because of the inconsistencies, I would think that there was only one Betsy Shackleford at South Union and that she was neither 12 or 14 when she died. However, I cannot explain all these dates. I t would be most unlikely for two Betsy Shacklefords, one 12 and one 14, to die on the same day in any case.

Drucilla Shackelford   Tues., July 21, 1818, p. 268

Move - 5 children - Drucilla Shackelford, Peggy McCuen & Nancy Rice from the Childrens Order to the Centre family & Jency Small & Betsy Friend to the Frame House.

Comments:  This is the only entry for Drucilla. (She does not appear on the membership list near the end of the journals.) It would appear that she had reached the age where she was no longer considered a child, whatever that age might be.

Whose child was she? The child of Roger and Sally or of the younger Roger and Betsy? Could she be the Drusilla Shackelford who married David Binkley on 30 August 1821 in Davidson County, Tennessee, with minister Peter Fuqua officiating. I believe that she may well be. Although I have abundant Binkley information, I do not know the parents of this David either. As a desendant of Frederick Binkey and Adeline Shackelford, I think it likely that this was a marriage between relatives of each. Peter Fuqua officiated at a number of other Binkley weddings in the early nineteenth century, including the wedding of my great grandfather, Frederick and Adeline's son, William Blackman Binkley to Caroline Wilson in 1833.

The 1850 Census shows the following family living in Robertson County, Tennessee, which is just over the state line from Kentucky:

Name Age Sex Occupation Real Place

Estate of birth

David Binkley 49 M Farmer 700 NC

Drucilla 46 F Unknown

Susan 23 F

Henry 20 M

John 17 M

Emeline 15 F

This would make Drusilla's birthdate around 1804. If she is the Drucilla of South Union, she would have been abt 14 when she left the Childrens Order and around 17 when she married David Binkley.

Mongtomery Shackelford   Tues., Dec., 7, 1813, p. 194

Move - Roger & Sally Shackelford to Black Lick. Their two children to school - Zecharia & Montgomery.   Wed., Aug. 18, 1813, p. 187   Confession - Montgomery Shackelford to Francis Whyte.

Mon., Aug. 26, 1822, p. 333 An entry entitled "Great Move" shows Montgomery in a list of young people moved to Black Lick from the North House.

(Montgomery does not appear on the membership list or on the death list.)

Robinson Shackelford   Wed., Sept. 25, 1816, p. 240   Backwards they go. - Robinson Shackelford & Tarrence Dial leave Black Lick to day for Mississippi.

Mon., Nov. 11, 1816, p. 243

Return - (And I presume re-admitted H.L.E.) [Note: H.L.E. is the compiler of the records. sbt]

Robinson Shackelford & old Tarrance Dial, his daughter Polly & family came back.

(Robinson does not appear on the membership or death lists.)

Comments: Who is this Robinson Shackelford? Is he the brother of the older Roger (which seems unlikely) or is he some other Shackelford, perhaps one of Betsy's unnamed children?

The 1850 Census for Edmonson County, Kentucky lists the following household:

Robinson Shackleford, age 53

Sarah, age 54

Oliver, age 21

Martin L., age 16

Sarah E., 12

Although this seems to be a good candidate to be the Robinson in the South Union records, we still do not know whose son he is.

Roger Shackelford, Jr.   Thurs., May 30, 1816, p. 233   Confession - Roger Shackelford, Junr. to Francis Whyte. Blk. Lick.

(Roger Jr. does not appear in the membership or death lists.)

Comments:  Perhaps Roger left after Betsy's death.

William Shackelford   Tues., March 4, 1817, p. 247

Move - Lucy Freeman & Wm. Shackelford go from the North House to Black Lick.

(William does not appear in the death list or the membership list.)

Comments:  Again, who is this William Shackelford? The Census lists a number of Williams in the early part of the nineteenth century.

Zechariah Shackelford   Wed. Aug. 4, 1813, p. 187   Confession - Zechariah Shackelford to Benjamin. Tues., Dec. 16, 1817, p. 258   Changes & Removal - All the youth at the North family removed to day--those who went to the Brick or centre family were vis: List of those going to the frame family includes Zechariah Shackelford.

Sab., Apr. 29, 1827, p. 405

Names of Water Vliet or Children's Family

Hudson Shackelford's name appears in this list.   Tues., Oct. 13, 1835, p. 585 Demise - Hudson Shackelford a young man about 20 years of Age died on the 12th Inst of consumption. He was living at the East family - Had seemingly but a   small amount of religious feeling, but was quiet, reeceiving a good name   by the speakers who were at his funeral at the East family Viz. Aged J. Rankin & Eld. Br S.G. Eades.

Funeral & Burial today.

From the South Union Death Record

Hudson Shackelford, Born in Virginia in the year 1811. Died Oct. 11, 1835. Age [difficult to read] 30 years.

From the Memberhip List

Hudson Shackelford, b. 10 Nov. 1811, d. 12 Oct. 1825, age 24.

Comments: In Hudson's case there is one of several puzzling instances of people computing the wrong age from birth and death dates.

Montgomery Shackelford   Mon., Aug. 26, 1822, p. 333   Great Move Continued - Hudson and Montgomery Shackelford are in a list of boys being moved to the Centre and Frame families.

(Montgomery does not appear on the memberhip and death lists.)

Viney Shackelford   May 1, 1827, p. 407   A continuation of a list of members of the East Family. Viney Shackelford is listed as a Sub-Eldress.

Tues., Oct 23, 1827, p. 415

Re-Admitted - Viney Shackelford re-admitted to day, who said before she left that she "would burn in hell to a crackelen" before she would ever return-- foolish girl!

Sat., July 6, 1833 - Absconding again! - Vincey [sic] Shackelford, who said when she went before she would not return until she burned to a "cracklin" - Now goes to try burning over again. She applied to Knight Bowles one of our hired   carpenters who took her to his home.

Comments: Again, who is Viney? Need I say that she is most definitely not in the membership and death lists?

Carter Shackelford, Harrison Shackelford   July 30, 1852, p. 194 N. [possibly H] Shackelford took away his two boys, Harrison & Carter.

Feb. 1, 1861, p. 265

Admitted - Carter Shackelford came & united at the North.

July 16, 1862, p. 303

Departure - Carter Shackelford left.

(These Shackelfords are not listed in the death records or membership list.)

Comments:  And who are these people? I was reading from a photostat of an old smeary carbon. N. could have been H. On the other hand, I did not see the  manuscript, and it is possible that the original initial was neither.

Absconding - Lucy Shackelford is now at the Office, that far on her way to the World the 3rd time I think for Lucy.

(Lucy appears in neither the death list nor the membership list.)

Comments:  The journalist was exceedingly charitable in his tally of Lucy's departures, I believe. She is not listed in the death records or in the membership list at the end of the journals, which appears not to include those members who did not die in the Society. I could not find a Shackelford in the Sumner County, Tenn., (Gallatin) census for either 1860 or 1870.

General Shackelford

May 14, 1863, p. 352

Soldiers - 90 Cavalry passed to day going East. General Order No. 18 issued from Headquarters U.S. forces at Russellville, Ky was posted up at our PO Yesterday; it reads as follows: "All male citizens of Logan County who have not taken the Oath, are required to report at the Provost Marshalls Office in the town of Russellville, on or before the 1st day of June next, & take the Oath of Allegiance to the US Government - Any one failing to comply with this order will be at once arrested & Sent South of the Federal lines, not to return during the rebellion under penalty of death.

Signed

Brig. Gen. Shackelford"

[The diary then recounts at some length how the Believers did not wish to take the oath for reasons of conscience. After appealing to one of Gen. Shackelford's subordinates, they received a letter from the General giving them permission to abstain. sbt]

Comments:  How ironic that the Brethren at South Union had this exchange with a general who was no doubt a relative of some of their members. Does anyone know  exactly who this general is in terms of Shackelford genealogy?

This is what I found in Who Was Who in the Civil War by Stewart Sifakis, Facts on File Publications, New York, 1988, p. 582-583:

"Shackelford, James Murrell

(1827-1909)

The loss of a spouse cost the Union army the services of one of its generals, James M. Shackelford. The Kentucky native had served as a lieutenant of the 4th Kentucky during the Mexican War and then entered upon the practice of law. Remaining loyal to the Union, he enlisted at the beginning of 1862 and his assignments included: colonel, 25th Kentucky (January 1, 1862);colonel, 8th Kentucky Cavalry (September 13, 1862); brigadier general, USV (March 2, 1863); and commanding in the Army of the Ohio: 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 23rd Corps (June 24-August 6, 1863); 3rd Brigade, 4th Division, 23rd Corps (August 6-September 10, 1863); the division [sic](September 10-November 3, 1863); and Cavalry Corps (November 1863-January 1864). As commander of an infantry regiment, he was recommissioned in September as the colonel of a mounted regiment. Advanced to brigadier general, he took part in the pursuit of John Hunt Morgan's raiders and actually received Hunt's [sic] surrender in Ohio. He suffered a slight foot wound in the September 3, 1863, action at Geiger's Lake, Kentucky. After commanding the mounted arm in defense of Knoxville he resigned effective January 18, 1864, citing the loss of his wife. He then resumed his practice and for a time was a judge. He also represented the Choctaw Indians in their dealings with the U.S. government."

Comments:  Not only do we not know who the parents of this Margaret (Maggie) are, but none of her dates make any sense. She was born in either in 1826 or 1850 and died either on April 8 or April 10, 1890, at which time her age would have been neither 50 nor 62.

Tee,  I am forwarding some mail I received from Joanne Garner, another descendant of Roger Shackleford and Mary Palmer. Some of  her information about the younger Roger and about William does not agree with what most of us already have, and she does not have access to the sources for her information at the moment as I think this research was done a number of years ago. She cannot access the Internet at this time but would like to be on the e-mail loop.

Does anyone else have information on William , son for Roger and Carey?
