I know nothing about John except his name as given on Lucinda's marriage bond. I have checked census records and can find nothing on John Shackelford or Nathan and Lucinda (Shackelford) Miller. Other than the marriage bond and some sketchy notes written by my grandmother, these people seemed to have lived lives which didn't require many trips to the courthouse. Part of the problem is that they lived during that hard to research (in my opinion) period from 1800 to 1850 in (W)VA in which church records and vital statistics records in courthouses generally don't exist and in which census records are of limited value.

Another posting from Phillip on Sep. 9, 1997:

I saw your ancestor list on the Upshur Co GebWeb page. I am also related to the Shackleford family and it is really a deadend for me. In a nutshell, my ancestor Nancy Miller (b. ca. 1830 d. aft 1880) married Elijah Piles and they lived in Preston Co. My family notes only, I know her father was Nathan Miller and her mother was a Shackleford. I have found an 1827 marriage bond for a Nathan Miller and Lucinda Shackleford in Monongalia County. I believe these were Nancy's parents as Nancy named a daughter "Lucinda." The 1827 marriage bond shows that Lucinda Shackleford's father's name was John Shackleford.

I have recently learned that Nancy Miller and Elijah Piles named one of their children John Wilkens Fletcher Piles. The names Wilkens and Fletcher may or may not be family surnames which tie into the Shackleford family.

This is all I know. Does any of this seem to tie to your Shackleford family?
