1998 PWI Comeback of the Year

As comebacks go, this one was really good. Yes, X-Pac came back from a serious neck injury in 1998, but he had to deal with a lot more adversity. In March, while still recovering from the career-threatening neck injury he had suffered in the fall of 1997, X-Pac (then known as Syxx) received a Federal Express package that would change his life. In it was his termination letter from WCW. It was one of the lowest points of his career. Did he sulk? Did he allow himself to fall into a state of deep depression? No way. He returned to the WWF one day after WrestleMania and wasted no time in grabbing a microphone and ripping into former boss Eric Bischoff, the man who had fired him from WCW. And he immediately aligned himself with the new and improved D-Generation X. A few months later, he started to let his wrestling do the talking as he moved into title contention. "Here was a guy who was kind of in the background of the nWo," said Tim McKenzie of Natick, Massachusetts. "He won the WCW Cruiserweight title, but he didn't seem to be a major force in that group. Now I can't even imagine DX without him."

For a lighter wrestler, he can certainly pull his weight in DX. He compensates for his lack of size by dazzling his opponents with a high-flying, martial arts style. He won the WWF European title twice in 1998 - beating D'Lo Brown each time. He also worked his way to the finals of the Intercontinental title tournament and upended the winner of that tournament, Ken Shamrock, in a non-title bout a week later.

"I've proved to everyone in the WWF and everyone in that other company that I can still go," said X-Pac. "You can knock me down as many times as you want, but I just keep getting back up."

X-Pac is long removed from his days as The 1-2-3 Kid and Syxx. He is a superstar with a very bright future. He is no longer the wrestler who's good for pulling off the occasional upset. Injuries and setbacks have only made him stronger.
