Who's Who in Wrestling

Syxx/Kid - Was about to call it quits in 1992. He had developed a cult following in the PWA, logged a tour of Japan, and finally gained national exposure via ESPN in the early evolution of the Global Wrestling Federation. Still, the Lightning Kid (as he was then known) kept running into the same obstacle when trying to gain employment in the Big Two: the talent agents were judging him based on how he looked rather than how he worked. Besides being babyfaced, the Kid was not even 200 pounds.

The WWF finally took a chance by signing him, not really expecting much more than another overmatched competitor to give the "names" a brief challenge in TV matches. That's exactly what they got - at first. When the gangly youngster started scoring upset victories on top-liners like Razor Ramon, the ultimate underdog was nicknamed the 1-2-3 Kid by the shocked Vince McMahon.

Proved his speed, aerials and deft kicks could make up for often huge size differences by winning the WWF tag belts from a team that included Bam-Bam Bigelow. Gained further respect from a grueling series with Hakushi and on European tours, where he was very popular. 1-2-3 had one more surprise for the WWF up his sleeve - he made the decision to turn rulebreaker, thumbing his nose at all those he felt failed to give him due credit from the start.

Though it wasn't well-known to the public, the Kid belonged to the infamous "Klique." Thus, when Diesel and Ramon went to Atlanta to become nWo founders Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, respectively, it was expected by insiders that the Minneapolis native would align himself with his friends upon the termination of his WWF contract. Five Order members already on board, he was re-christened Syxx upon switching promotions.

Avoided the thriving Cruiserweight division, concerned it would reverse all the effort he put into establishing himself as able to cope with "the big boys" (Note: This doesn't sound right - after all, Syxx did hold the Cruiserweight Championship for four months in 1997). Winning the US Championship proved his point (Another Note: Syxx *never* won the US Championship; he did steal it, though *G*).

One of the drawbacks of continually giving away a considerable weight advantage is the tendency to receive injuries. Health problems put the Kid on the rack for a portion of his first WWF tenure, and all through the winter of 1998. Then again, this is a wrestler who was knocked unconscious going over the top in his indie days, yet still managed to get back into the ring and pin his opponent!

Did You Know...the Syxx-Pac nickname (a take-off of "Tupac") was first hung on the Kid by a WW columnist in a personal correspondence to the wrestler?)
