HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN ?

During the 'middle ages', or the 'dark ages', as some people will call this period, a 'pagan' ritual was performed during the 'ides' of February.  This celebration was a 'love' festival.

Later, the Catholic Church named a Feast Day for Saint Valentine.  The date for this holy day was set on February 14th.  Valentine was a priest and physician in Rome.  He died around 270 A.D.

In more modern times, the pagan love festival became connected with St. Valentine's Feast Day.  He is now thought by many to be the 'patron saint' of lovers.

Many people also ascribe this time of year to when birds start to choose their mates for the coming year.
