What's New Some exciting changes are in our business plan. For an up-to-the-minute overview, see Online Update.
Are we headed for the apocalypse or a few hours of inconvenience? Doomsday, business as usual, or something between the two?
Two minutes' time with our news ticker should convince even the skeptical reader that we have not yet learned to live in peace and harmony as a global village. If you haven't used one of these before, clicking on a particular headline will open a new browser window with the full story. To return to this page, simply close the second window.
Time Online writer Chris Taylor's sage observation, "The fact is that no one on the planet really knows what will happen when 01-01-00 rolls around" (see "The History and the Hype," Time, January 18, 1999) is more than enough reason for concern. Indeed, what the global village thinks will happen may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
We think a cyberspace bookshop is an appropriate venue in which to probe these questions. Here you will find the thinking of programmers and systems engineers, Native American spiritual leaders, respected psychics, traditional clerics, and a host of others. All of them have had something to say about the year 2000.
To help you sort this out, we've assembled several reading lists, available through the pull-down menu below. In addition to the Y2K problem itself, you'll find titles on survival and rural living along with Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce. Many have accompanying reviews or publishers' comments, accessable by clicking on the books' covers. Sample chapters or complete tables of contents are often available as well.
As always, our books
are backed by the unconditional return policy, worldwide shipping,
and secure online transactions of barnesandnoble.com. All of which
have earned us Public Eye's certification as a safe shopping site.
We hope to become a good
neighbor in cyberspace by contributing something useful to the millennium
dialogue. Other than selling books, we've provided some free
tools to help you discover your own answers to some of these questions.
Navigation here is simplicity
itself. Here's where the sidebar buttons will take you:
Add URL A searchable directory with plenty of space to describe the focus or your own Web page or
site. Other than a robot confirmation that your link has been added to the system, we promise not to solicit you or to send junk email.
Book Review
Every week or so we highlight a particular title in this section.
Bookstore The
two
major advantages of ordering books on-line are: substantial discounts and
convenience. There are links to the gift
center as well as to a large collection of current magazines.
Classifieds Here is the place to list your product, service, or almost anything else. Usual restriction on adult themes. Our classifieds are free, of course!
FFA Links On February 8, 1999, Y2K Books became an affiliate of LinkPlace. This incredible system accommodates 30,000 items, all of which are searchable. Here is the place to list your site!
Guestbook You are also invited to "sign" our central guestbook with comments, insights, or questions. The value of a public guestbook is dialogue with other visitors and with us. We particularly
cherish our international guests, and there is provision to identify your country.
Links Useful
resource links to goods, services, and yet more Y2K thinking. We have recently joined SurvivalRing, a network of Web sites dedicated to year 2000 issues. Among other conveniences, the WebRing technology allows remote navigation between member sites. A simple interface is provided at the end of each member's home page, including ours. You may access these sites sequentially or choose from a list of detailed descriptions.
Newsgroups Often
the pulse of conventional wisdom. We've assembled a representative
selection and have provided an easy way to get at them--whether or not
your Internet Service Provider subscribes.
Search Our interface
to the barnesandnoble.com database of several million titles, both in and
out of print. Once inside the B&N system, you may refine your
search any way you choose, such as books within a specific price range.
You may also search our site here at Tripod (or the Web) with the whatUseek interface below. Page titles generally correspond to the sidebar buttons.
Twenty million people have
purchased goods or services on the Internet. The technology is sure,
safe, and secure. When you decide to order something here, you are handed off to Barnes and Noble's secure system. You are always welcome to send us email with questions or comments. A sidebar button has contact information.
A biweekly newsletter offering
useful tips and suggestions to help increase your site's hits. It's
free,
and you may remove yourself from the list at any time. Administrative
details are managed for us by ListBot.
